Royals Notes - Baltimore Orioles @ Kansas City Royals - Monday, August 24, 2015 This & That GORDO GOES DEEP IN INJURY REHAB OPENER--All-Star outfielder returned “home” last night to start an injury rehab stint in his home state of Nebraska as he DH’d for the Storm Chasers...a native of nearby Lincoln, Gordo was 1-for-4 but the “one” was a towering home run to rightfield that brought all Nebraskans to their feet...he has been out of action since suffering a groin injury in a July 8 win over Tampa Bay. SERIES WORK--Yesterday’s ninth inning uprising gave the Royals a split of their 4-game visit to Boston, as Kansas City has now won or split its last five series, going 4-0-1...over a longer period, the club is 10-3-1 in its last 14 sets...on the year, the Royals are 25-11 with five splits in the 41 series played...Kansas City has been particularly tough at home of late, winning its last seven sets in Kauffman Stadium dating back to a 4-game sweep of Tampa Bay in early July...the Royals entered play on June 7 trailing by a game in the A.L. Central, but was a 4-3 winner at home over the Rangers that day which propelled Kansas City to a big league best 45-25 record since and a 13 1/2-game turnaround in the standings...included in that stretch is a 24-9 record in Kauffman Stadium. IN AND OUT SCHEDULE--Kansas City is in the throes of a bit of a segmented schedule right now, playing a two-game series in Cincinnati last week, followed by four in Boston before returning home for this four-game stay against the Orioles...the Royals will leave immediately following Thursday’s matinee for a quick three- game jaunt to Florida and a weekend set against the Tampa Bay Rays...things will then settle down, with next Monday slated as an off day before KC plays nine straight at home followed by 10 on the road, the final six at home and then the final seven on the road. PEN BACK TO BLANKS--A trio of relievers finished up yesterday’s contest in Boston with 2.1 shutout innings, with Chris Young the benefactor of the ninth inning rally for his ninth win of the season, second as a reliever...after seeing a streak of 18.2 consecutive shutout innings get snapped on Saturday, the pen returned to scoreless form yesterday giving the Royals’ relievers a 0.75 ERA in their last seven games, allowing two earned runs in 24.0 innings, while holding the opposition to a .145 average (12-for-83)...KC’s bullpen has returned to its perch atop the Majors in ERA with a 2.31 mark, edging past St. Louis at 2.37...the Royals have also combined for a 26-8 record by their relief corps, easily the best winning percentage in baseball, at .765, while KC’s 44 saves are third-most in the Majors, behind only the Cards (50) and Tampa Bay (48). THE LAND OF HOZ--Eric Hosmer remained one of the hottest hitters in the game on Sunday with his two-hit, two-RBI effort in Boston...his .383 average (62-for- 162) since July 8 is second in the Majors to Ian Kinsler’s .384 mark in that same span...in those 42 games, Hoz has scored 35 runs, recorded 10 doubles, two triples, six home runs and 33 RBI with an OPS of 1.081...he is sixth in the A.L. in multi-hit games with 42 and ranks fourth in go-ahead RBI with 22...his .317 season mark is currently fourth in the league. KC’S ALL-TIME TOP SKIPPER-- is edging ever so close to getting his Kansas City managerial record back to where it started at break even, which will be quite the feat considering how things started...he enters tonight with a 448-450 ledger since taking over the managerial duties on May 13, 2010...from the day he began in the Royals’ dugout through the 2012 season, his KC clubs compiled a 198-253 record for a .439 winning pct...since the start of 2013, Ned’s troops have gone 250- 197 for a .559 winning pct., which is the best record in the American League (Baltimore next at 243-204), and fourth-most wins in the Majors trailing only St. Louis (265), the Pirates (256) and Dodgers (253)...he now has 905 career wins to rank 68th on the all-time win list, five wins shy of Jimy Williams for 67th and sixth among active skippers...the 16th full-time manager in Royals’ history, Yost became the winningest skipper in franchise annals with #411 on June 18 vs. Milwaukee, passing Royals’ Hall of Famer, Whitey Herzog, who won 410 games from 1975-79...also the all-time leader in games managed in Kansas City with 898, this is Ned’s second stint as a big league manager after nearly six years at the helm for Milwaukee (2003-2008), compiling a 457-502 record with the Brew Crew including a 166-146 mark in his last two seasons...Yost’s 1,857 games managed are 63rd on the all-time list. THE BRUISE BROTHERS--Lorenzo Cain got popped in the back with a delivery yesterday, giving the Royals an A.L. high 64 hit by pitches, which are 10 more than last season’s total...conversely, KC’s staff has plunked just 35, which rank as the fourth-fewest in the league...Mike Moustakas is tied with teammate Alex Gordon for third in the A.L. with 12 bruises...Gordon is going on seven weeks missed due to a left groin strain, but has still been hit one more time this year than his previous career high established last year...Cain is now tied for seventh with nine, Alcides Escobar is tied for 15th with seven...the club record is 89 in 2007.
