Our Marketing 2019 / 2020 Manager hadn’t clicked into skis yet. Our Brand Director could still count of skiing his age on his hands. Amir Zaki grew up skateboarding, so he has an understanding of these spaces and, as an artist who has spent years photographing the built and natural landscape of California, he has an appreciation of the large concrete structures as both sculptural forms and significant features of the contemporary landscape, belonging to a tradition of public art and Brutalist architecture. Each remarkable photograph in this book is a composite of shots taken with a digital camera mounted on a motorized tripod head; this allows Zaki to photograph areas that would otherwise be impossible to capture. -

Finding Transitions
FINDING TRANSITIONS CROSSING OVER WITH TOM WALLISCH “This photo was taken at 10:30 p.m. in -15 degree temps. Before each hit, Tom walked up a ladder in ski boots to a nearly dark in-run. Once on the roof, he had to generate enough speed to drop fully blind off the two-story building onto a down rail. On his first hit, he ripped out his toe piece in the landing. This was his second, laced perfectly.” Minneapolis, MN. Photo: Josh Bishop “Phil Casabon and Mike Hornbeck had yet to arrive. Tom was on his own hiking a trapezoid rail off a residential street. He didn’t like his shot, but it was -10 degrees and he hiked the feature until dark. He’s always had a legendary work ethic, but maintaining that level of focus 17-plus years into a professional career is another level.” Minneapolis, MN. Photo: Josh Bishop Words Megan Michelson behind the computer HUNKERED at his home in Park City, UT, Tom Wallisch is obsessively researching. He’s not watching ski videos or scouting the next loca- tion he wants to film. Actually, it has nothing to do with skiing. He’s doing a deep dive into the stock market, enrolled in an online course on financial analysis. “My kind of job doesn’t last forever,” says Wallisch, one of in frozen parking lots and outside closed city libraries. All in skiing’s most visible stars for more than a decade. “I’ve got to all, he’s a bit of an anomaly: a skier not only revered by the learn how to invest what I’ve made.” counterculture, but also celebrated by the mainstream. -

Celebrating and Preserving the History and Heritage of Maine Skiing • Winter 2017 SKI MUSEUM OF MAINE Bean Boost: Maine’s iconic outdoor retailer major factor in skiing history By Scott Andrews Editor, Snow Trail For more than a century, L.L. Bean has been identified with Maine’s sporting heritage, especially hunting, fishing and general outdoor recreation. And for many of those 100-plus years, the company’s role went much further than selling top-quality goods. L.L. Bean also actively promoted and spread the gospel of outdoor recreation via lessons, programs and sponsorships. So it should come as no surprise to learn that Maine’s iconic outdoor retailer also boosts the sport of skiing in a major way. The story of that Bean boost began in the 1920s and continues to the present. This issue of Snow Trail Leon Leonwood Bean (left), founder and namesake of Freeport’s traces the history of the company’s famous outdoor retail firm, is pictured with an unidentified man at a 1947 contest which awarded a trophy to boys and girls for involvement. proficiency in skiing.
