Not only have the Kyle Matthews Coburg Tigers struggled to win matches in the second half of the season, they’ve struggled to even win quarters. The Tigers are 9-20-1 from round nine to round 16 inclusive, a period that mirrors the club’s overall record of 1-7 in the same time span. That slump has pushed Coburg’s promising start to the season into losing territory in quarters won overall, where they’re 28-31-1. The Coburg Tigers own three losing quarters – the first (7-8), second (6-9) and fourth (5-9-1), where only Frankston and the Bendigo Bombers have performed worse. The club’s best quarter is its third, where it is 10-5, second only to Williamstown, which is what makes Coburg’s overall performance so puzzling.

James GEELONG Podsiadly After meandering through the first eight rounds with a pedestrian 10-18 record, Geelong turned its season on its head with an 18-10 record over the next eight rounds. It has resulted in the Cats surging up the ladder to loom menacingly with the finals fast approaching. Geelong has mounted its challenge on good starts. It is 6-1 during its winning run, whereas it was 1-6 to start the season. Geelong only boasts the one winning quarter, the third – where it is 8-6 – and has broken square in the first and the fourth. The Cats’ only losing quarter is the second, which has prevailed throughout their charge up the ladder. Despite their good starts, the Cats seemingly always struggle in the second term. They’re 3-4 in the past seven rounds, exactly the same as the club’s start to the season.

Jacob Spolding NORTHERN Jarrod BULLANTS McCorkell Hard to get a read on just where Northern Bullants sit in the finals mix after analysing their quarter- by-quarter performances. For a club that sat fifth after round 16 on the premiership ladder, the Bullants register only 10th on the quarters won ladder. Only Werribee, Frankston and Bendigo, who occupy the final three places on the actual ladder and quarters won ladder, are below the Bullants. But it’s not as if the Bullants are woeful at winning quarters – far from it. They get off to a good start – 8-6 in the first quarter and 8-5-1 in the second – but fall away in the second half of games. The Bullants are 5-9 in the third quarter and 6-8 in the last, but for all that they outscore opponents in the last quarter and are only three goals in NORTH the red in the third. Peter Summers WERRIBEE Marty While it has been Pask competitive throughout the season, the bottom line for Werribee is that it hasn’t won any of the four quarters overall. During their early season slump, the Tigers failed to ignite at the start of any games. For six successive weeks from round five through round 10, Werribee didn’t win a first quarter. To compound matters, it lost five second quarters during that period. Werribee’s best quarter is its last, but by that stage in most cases the match is effectively over. Only once – in round two against the Bendigo Bombers – has Werribee won all four quarters, and only twice against the Box Hill Hawks and North Ballarat has it won three quarters in a game. Not surprisingly, all resulted in wins.

Matthew Little WILLIAMSTOWN SANDRINGHAM Williamstown makes a For a club that has statement right off the outscored its opponent bat. The Roosters are back on track in seasons, Port Melbourne is season 2009. coming off another home victory, this time at the expense of the Northern Bullants. While Port Melbourne is nigh on invincible at home, it has been less than convincing on the road, and this fact alone tilts the scales considerably in the favour of North Ballarat. Meanwhile, the stakes are similarly high when the Northern Bullants welcome a rampaging Geelong, who have climbed from 11th and a percentage of 78 in round eight to seventh and a 102 percentage on the back of a six- game winning streak. Admittedly, four of those victories have been at Skilled Stadium, but the VFL Cats, bolstered by an impressive number of seasoned AFL players, can book their place in the finals with a win over the Bullants. fter Williamstown belted Cleary (right) masterminded Coburg by 11 goals in Coburg’s win over Williamstown. the televised match of Athe day midway through the 1989 season, Phil Cleary left North Port Oval (now TEAC Oval) more convinced than ever that he had the team to win the flag. Over the ensuing days, Cleary began plotting the strategy that would lead to Coburg defeating Williamstown for the second consecutive year in a Grand Final. “I went home that night and thought, ‘we’re still the best team in the competition, we’re better than Williamstown,’ and they were the only team that could beat us,” Cleary recalled. “I wrote down names and where people could play and match-ups. I fiddled and fiddled and fiddled, and within a few days I thought, ‘yeah, I’ve worked it out’.” Cleary, a club and competition legend, was right.
