We started our day with a walk through stringybark EAGLEHAWK WATERHOLE CAMPOUT habitat. Autumn can be a quiet time for birds in this habitat, but we were incredibly lucky as the desert 12-14 APRIL – HONEYEATER HEAVEN stringybark was in full flower -an event which only occurs once every three years. Luckily, we weren’t on survivor and had plenty of red wine, chocolate and a campfire to warm us up for a big weekend of birding. Although various doubts were voiced about my fire management abilities, Angela and I got a superb campfire going and also managed to avoid setting fire to the property. As we settled in by the campfire, a Contents Boobook duet began, and Owlet-nightjars called close to camp which was a nice welcome to 1. Eaglehawk Waterhole campout 12-14 April – Eaglehawk. From left to right: Angela Jones, David Sando, Gwen Young, Jeff Davies, Bob Green, Vicki Natt, Cassie Amongst all the racket, an unfamiliar call was Hlava (absent Phil Verco) heard, which turned out to be a Yellow-plumed

Honeyeater, a species which is quite common in the mallee but rarely recorded in this part of the South Eaglehawk 12/4 - 15/4 East. This sighting is a new record for Eaglehawk Long-billed Corella Waterhole. Throughout the weekend, we also saw Galah Spiny-cheeked, Brown-headed, Yellow-faced, Black- Crimson Rosella chinned, White-eared, Blue-faced, and New-Holland Willie Wagtail Honeyeaters. A total of thirteen honeyeater species Welcome Swallow were recorded. During his surveys of the Bangham White-fronted Honeyeater district of 2013 David Baker-Gabb also recorded a Australian Magpie huge influx of honeyeaters in autumn - so it Eastern Rosella appears to be a semi-regular occurrence. Sulphur-crested Cockatoo Other morning highlights included Brown White-plumed Honeyeater , Jacky Winter, Australian Ringneck Grey Currawong , White Browed-Babbler, Buff-rumped Tawny-crowned Honeyeater Thornbill and Variegated Fairy-Wren. Spotted In the afternoon, we checked out a few good spots Red-rumped on Eaglehawk and an adjacent bush block and were Forest Raven happy to glimpse Southern Whiteface, Red-capped Grey Shrike-thrush Robin, Brown Quail and Australian Hobby. Laughing Kookaburra The next morning was rather cool and misty, which Southern Boobook made for an atmospheric stroll through the buloke Pacific Black Duck woodlands on St Aubin’s scrubland reserve. We Brown Treecreeper admired the diverse habitats, and huge majestic Australian Owlet-nightjar gums with many hollows. Some of the rare species Australian Raven we recorded at St Aubin’s were Scarlet Robin, Grey Fantail Dusky Woodswallow, Peregrine Falcon and Varied Red Wattlebird Sittella. Jacky Winter After everyone else left the camp, that evening a South-eastern Red-tailed Black-Cockatoo Tawny Frogmouth decided it was safe to come and White-eared Honeyeater hang out in the camping area. The following Musk Lorikeet morning it was nice to see a Crested Shrike-tit Yellow-plumed Honeyeater foraging for lerps in the Pink Gum near camp. A Striated Pardalote great to top off an enjoyable weekend. NELSON OUTING AND ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING.

Many thanks to Christina Loras for allowing us to visit her lovely riverside property, and to see the great work she is doing fencing some of the sensitive areas off. We had a great turnout for our first field outing for the year with 20 people fronting up, I’m sure it had more to do with the birds than the offer to attend the AGM but who knows? We started off with a stroll around the riverbank, adding birds to the list rapidly, a few Nankeen Night Herons were spotted roosting in large trees, a lone Common Sandpiper Morning tea break took off as we walked past, the usual waterbirds were spotted with a bit of effort by scanning the riverbank, and a few Blue-winged Parrots flying We managed a total of 56 species for the outing around were quite cooperative in landing on a which is always a good number to get. nearby fence for people to enjoy a better look. Australasian Bittern Completing a loop down by the estuary Maureen Australasian Pipit spotted a lone Pied Cormorant which completed the Australian Hobby set of all five cormorants in quick succession Australian Magpie (always nice to see). Just as we were heading back Australian Pelican up the hill towards the house a bird was spotted Australian Pied Oystercatcher flying to a low tree, a better look from another Australian White Ibis angle and yes I’ll admit it I was off in a hurry, Black Swan calling out to others that I had just spotted a Pied Black-faced Cormorant Butcherbird, a short jog, a roll under an electric Blue-winged Parrot fence and off up the hill I managed a better look as Brown Falcon the bird moved gradually NW along the roadside Brown Thornbill veg. A call to Rob Farnes (author of the Birds of the Brush Bronzewing Portland District) and I found out this is the third Chestnut Teal record for SW Victoria so a very good bird to add to Common Sandpiper the days list. With some other strange records Common Starling recently around the region including Yellow-tu fted Crested Tern Honeyeater, Channel-billed Cuckoo and an influx of Crimson Rosella Black Kites, it is proving to be an odd year. Eastern Yellow Robin We then had a morning tea break on the riverbank, Eurasian Coot before driving up to the back end of Christina’s Eurasian Skylark property for a look at the swamp area and the Forest Raven fenced off forested area adjoining it. Galah Golden-headed Cisticola Before everyone had even got out of the cars Gwen Great Cormorant had done a quick scan and located an Australasian Grey Currawong Bittern spying on us from the reedbeds, this made Grey Fantail Christina very happy indeed. The bird as they often Grey Shrike-thrush do, was swaying and ducking down seemingly intent Grey Teal on frustrating those of the group trying to get a Little Black Cormorant good look, but finally everyone managed a view and Little Pied Cormorant most through the scope. We added a number of Magpie-lark bush birds in this section and the Golden-headed Masked Lapwing Cisticola were busy buzzing away over the fence in Musk Duck the reeds. SPOTTED HARRIER INFLUX AND THE IMPORTANCE OF BIRDATA.

There have recently been numerous reports of Spotted Harriers from around our region, this happened in 2013 as well. In the years since we have had scattered records but in these two years multiple reports from right across the regions have been submitted. Perhaps reflecting drier conditions pushing them South (who knows?). Spotted Harrier It shows the importance of collecting records and in Bob Green particular of registering your sightings officially, perhaps consider using Birdata! It’s a great easy to use App (on phone) or website (on computer) where you can submit all your records, including older observations to our national database. If you would like to know more about using Birdata contact Bob Green mob. 0407 649 909 and Bob will help you get set up and started and answer any questions you might have.

SPOT THE BITTERN (PART 2) retrieved from retrapped birds and a total of 16 attached. 35 of the Ruddy Turnstone were birds that had been caught previously (retraps). One of these What looks like a bittern isn’t always a bittern, this was originally caught and banded as a juvenile in image shows how the shape alone can really grab Hokkaido, the northern most province in Japan, your attention. I’ve many times in the bush come while on migration. It was later caught by us in across a stick that looks like a bird, but it’s the first time I’ve come across such a convincing reed bird. Livingston Bay in 2015 when an engraved leg flag Bloody thing even has an eye if you look closely, (XCK) was attached. Two of other Ruddy Turnstone haha. caught have been caught on a number of occasions, both originally in 2006 as one year old birds. It was interesting that one of these birds has now been caught four times, every time at Port MacDonnell. This goes to show that turnstone are generally very site faithful birds. Sanderling proved to be more difficult to catch however a total of 112 was eventually caught over the expedition period. Once again, the group was fortunate to enjoy the wonderful hospitality of Paul Feast at his shack located at Green Point, and at the house of Iain and Sandy Stewart just outside of Rendelsham.

In March, Maureen and I travelled up to Noonameena to attend a meeting with the Federal Environment Minister Melissa Price on the Implementing the Limestone Coast and Coorong Coastal Action Plan (Our Coorong – Our Coast) and a tour of various locations in the Coorong. We were

able to speak to the Minister about the threats to SHOREBIRD NOTES both migratory and beach nesting shorebirds in the area. The Friends of Shorebirds SE have again been Maureen, Vicki and I, together with Barry and Angus involved in many and various activities since the from DEW recently travelled down to Inverloch in last Shorebird Notes. Thanks to our fantastic group Victoria for BirdLife ’s National Beach- of dedicated volunteers we were once again able to nesting Birds Conference and Hooded Plover cover all of our selected sites between The Granites Recovery Meeting. There were many interesting and the Victorian border for the April fledged speakers with talks on most beach nesting species, Hooded Plover survey. Unfortunately, numbers of from the diminutive Red-capped Plover to the large adult and immature Hooded Plovers seen were Beach Stone-curlew. We also had an afternoon field down again in this year’s count ; 59 birds including trip and a full-day field trip, where our crew 3 fledged in April 2019 as against 85 birds travelled to Wilsons Promontory National Park, with including 11 fledged in April 2018. This is after a its magnificent scenery and windswept coastline. lower total in 2018 compared with our record We saw good numbers of Hooded Plover and Sooty number in April 2017 of 112 birds including 10 Oystercatcher on the beaches, with Barry managing immature birds. These figures may however not be to get identifying photos of leg flags on two Hooded as grim as they may first appear. As is often the Plover and two Sooty Oystercatchers. case with these surveys more birds, including immatures, were seen in many of the count areas Weekly Outings : We usually go out each either before or after the survey period, but not ‘on Wednesday. So that you can be told where and the day’. when the activity will be - ring Maureen on The Victorian Wader Study Group April expedition Tuesday evening –042738 0014. When she is away was mostly successful with good numbers (174) of please ring Helen on 0499 084496. Ruddy Turnstone caught over the eight catching days. In addition, six light level geolocators were Jeff Campbell, Chairman, Friends of Shorebirds SE.
