Dear Nets Fans, A warm welcome to you as we tip off another season of the Brooklyn Nets here at Barclays Center. From the ownership side to the coaching staff and the players, we are all excited about the many strategic changes taking place in developing the culture of our organization. We are paying great attention to the details that make for a united team. Our roster features veteran players as well as younger talent with the coaching staff necessary to grow that talent to its maximum. The front office has been completely overhauled, supplementing our new key management with the best in scouting, analytics and consultants. Our brand new HSS Training Center right here in Brooklyn means we are now 100% part of this borough, and our new D-League team will allow us to develop fresh talent, both in terms of players and coaching staff. These are just a few examples of the steps we are taking in pursuit of the highest standards both on and off the court. This season, our mantra is “Brooklyn Grit.” The Brooklyn community inspires us to always work hard, to put in the hours, to pay our dues, and to fight without wavering in our journey toward sustainable success. For our fans all around the world, there will be plenty to see this season as the foundation is set, the team comes together, and the work starts to pay off. We’re delighted to have you along with us for the ride and thank you for your support! And now… GO NETS! NET As he enters his ninth season with the Nets, Brook Lopez is closing in on a definitive place in franchise history. Despite missing nearly all of two seasons with injuries, the 2008 first-round pick ranks near the top in several Nets historical categories, and is poised to climb a few more rungs in 2016-17. Lopez is already No. 2 in points behind Buck Williams and a repeat of last year’s 1,501 would get him within 34 points of the top spot. The 7-footer is also No. 2 in blocks, but much closer to the franchise record. With 848 rejections, he’s just 15 behind George Johnson. And while his 3,602 career rebounds leave him just outside the top five, matching his career average of 7.4 per game will have him at No. 3 by Thanksgiving. Finally, only four players — Williams, Jason Kidd, Richard Jefferson and Kerry Kittles — have played more minutes as a Net than Lopez. For an extended Brook Lopez photo gallery, visit brooklynnets.com/photos 8 16 | 17 BROOKLYN NETS BASKETBALL 9 RONDAE RISING With just 29 NBA games to his credit, Rondae Hollis-Jefferson has gone from an untested rookie to a crucial piece of the Nets’ puzzle. “I feel like I know a lot more,” said RHJ at the dawn of his second season. “Going into Summer League and playing some more and watching the game I feel like I’m going in knowing a lot more.” Hollis-Jefferson moved into the starting lineup just six games into his NBA career, only to have his rookie season interrupted by an ankle injury a month later. He returned to action in March. In that limited time, RHJ made an impression as an impact defender, with an active game that saw the 6-7 swingman average 5.3 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game as well as 5.8 points per game. Now he’s one of just five returning Nets players, and he got started on year two by getting in some action with Nets rookies at the NBA Summer League in Las Vegas, averaging 10.4 points, 6.6 rebounds, 3.2 steals and 2.2 assists per game. THE PENNSYLVANIA STATE UNIVERSITY SCHREYER HONORS COLLEGE DEPARTMENT OF ECONOMICS REVISITING THE SUPERSTAR EXTERNALITY: LEBRON’S ‘DECISION’ AND THE EFFECT OF HOME MARKET SIZE ON EXTERNAL VALUE ANDREW DAVID BRYANT SPRING 2013 A thesis submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for baccalaureate degrees in Mathematics and Economics with honors in Economics Reviewed and approved* by the following: Edward Coulson Professor of Economics Thesis Supervisor David Shapiro Professor of Economics Honors Adviser * Signatures are on file in the Schreyer Honors College. i ABSTRACT The movement of superstar players in the National Basketball Association from small- market teams to big-market teams has become a prominent issue. This was evident during the recent lockout, which resulted in new league policies designed to hinder this flow of talent. The most notable example of this superstar migration was LeBron James’ move from the Cleveland Cavaliers to the Miami Heat. There has been much discussion about the impact on the two franchises directly involved in this transaction. However, the indirect impact on the other 28 teams in the league has not been discussed much. This paper attempts to examine this impact by analyzing the effect that home market size has on the superstar externality that Hausman & Leonard discovered in their 1997 paper. A road attendance model is constructed for the 2008-09 to 2011-12 seasons to compare LeBron’s “superstar effect” in Cleveland versus his effect in Miami. An increase of almost 15 percent was discovered in the LeBron superstar variable, suggesting that the move to a bigger market positively affected LeBron’s fan appeal.

  • Devon Energy College Basketball Awards Announced; Oklahoma State’S Marcus Smart Heads Tisdale Watch List
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE October 15, 2012 Devon Energy College Basketball Awards Announced; Oklahoma State’s Marcus Smart Heads Tisdale Watch List OKLAHOMA CITY – The focus of NCAA men’s college basketball will be squarely on Oklahoma April 15, 2013 when the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards honors four of the game’s best. The name of the new awards event, formally known as the Wayman Tisdale Awards Gala, was unveiled this morning at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum, the site of the 2013 gala. As was announced earlier this year, the presentation of the Oscar Robertson Player of the Year Trophy presented by AFLAC, the Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award, and the Integris Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award, will be combined into a gala to be held annually the Monday following the NCAA Men’s Final Four. The U.S. Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) has previously presented the Robertson and Iba awards at its Champions Breakfast annually at the Final Four. The honoree receiving the Wayman Tisdale Humanitarian Award, presented by Devon Energy, will also be recognized at the Oklahoma City gala. ESPN’s Dick Vitale and Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski were the first two Humanitarian honorees and were on hand at the event. Devon Energy has been the founding presenting sponsor of the Tisdale event since its inception in 2011 and Alan Marcum, Devon executive vice president of administration, was on hand Monday morning to announce Devon’s commitment to the event and specifically to the Tisdale name through the Humanitarian Award. “It will be exciting for Devon, as an Oklahoma City-based company, to have the winners of these four prestigious awards here on the same stage for the first time,” Marcum said.
