There were four groups in our study, two of which heard an article, and two of which read an article. All groups were then given a posttest to assess their recall. Two of the four groups took an immediate posttest, and the other two took a delayed posttest 45 minutes after hearing or reading the article. Visual learning outperformed auditory learning in both the immediate post-test condition, as well as in the delayed post-test condition.     Learning styles as a basis for paddlesports instruction: A review of the literature and some alternatives to add to the conversation Jayson Seaman Ph.D ACA Level 4: Whitewater Kayaking Instructor Trainer When I became certified as a whitewater kayak instructor, I was told I needed to consider students’ learning styles. This point was emphasized by the ITs who taught my course and it was included as a main content area in my instructor manual. I felt as if I would be a terrible paddlesports instructor if I failed to teach to students’ different learning styles. I have a confession: I have never quite figured out how to do this. I’ve been teaching paddlesports for over ten years now, and other outdoor activities and content areas for nearly 20, and I still struggle with the idea of learning styles. Don’t get me wrong: I have watched students doze off because I’ve talked too much and others flip their boats because I haven’t sufficiently helped them acquire a ‘feel’ for a particular skill, so I know people have diverse aptitudes I need to address somehow. And I’m always trying to find better ways to reach them – it just doesn’t seem possible for me to identify what people’s learning styles are, and then use this knowledge to cater to them more effectively. My situation isn’t helped by the fact that I regularly work with a very talented and respected instructor who does seem to have this ability. She seems to be able to diagnose learning styles on the spot and adapt her instructional methods accordingly – a little more talking here, a slightly longer drill there, and some visualization exercises for others.

Our species, Homo Sapiens, are the beings who think. We are also the beings who learn, and the beings who simultaneously experience a rich spectrum of affective emotional states, including a selected suite of emotional states specifically and directly related to learning. This proposal reviews previously published research and theoretical models relating emotions to learning and cognition and presents ideas and proposals for extending that research and reducing it to practice. Our perspective The concept of affect in learning (i.e., emotions in learning) is the same pedagogy applied by an athletic coach at a sporting event. A coach recognizes the affective state of an athlete, and, for example, exhorts that athlete toward increased performance (e.g., raises the level of enthusiasm), or, redirects a frustrated athlete to a productive affective state (e.g., instills confidence, or pride). A coach recognizes that an athlete’s affective state is a critical factor during performance; and, when appropriate, a coach will intervene with a meaningful strategy or tactic. Athletic coaches are skilled at recognizing affective states and intervening appropriately. Educators can have the same impact on a learner by understanding a learner’s affective state and intervening with appropriate strategies or tactics that will meaningfully manage and guide a person’s learning journey. There are several learning theories and a great deal of neuroscience/affective research.
