Originating in the 1970s, Cantopop reached its height of popularity in the 1980s and 1990s. It slowly declined in the 2000s due to the effect of illegal downloads and piracy of copyright. Even so, the impact of Cantopop throughout different generations is still strong. Similar to other literature creations, the lyrics of Cantopop reflected not only the social sentiment and personal emotions, it is also a spiritual part of the culture of Hong Kong, which made this city more human and three-dimensional, and shaped the identity of the people in the city, through different generations. It is worth to look into how Cantonese, the mother dialect of most Hong Kong people, plays an important role in shaping one’s identity and self-realisation, through different forms of media, particularly in the form of Cantopop songs. By the upward economic development and social changes in the 70s, the sense of Hong Kong identity had begun to emerge in Hong Kong. Hong Kong identity should not only refer to the ethnicity or nationality which most people would automatically take this objective trait into account, but also comprised the social and cultural dimensions of the experience of daily life by the people living in Hong Kong (Turner, 2003). As an inhabitant living in Hong Kong, where is an international city with multicultural, autonomous, dynamic and energetic elements rooting in society, would you simply describe yourself as a Hongkonger? If the answer is Yes, do you mean you embrace or adopt the val- Page !3 ues, heritage, or collective memory which are commonly shared within Hong Kong commu- nity? If the answer is opposite, does it mean the person living in Hong Kong whom upholds resistance to the Hong Kong Identity? The answer is not just a dimensional reasoning of identity but a multi-faceted reasoning of how people categorise themselves in a complex so- ciety nowadays. Identity is always an interesting topic to talk about because it covers many perspectives including ethnical, philosophical, psychological, sociological, cultural, political and morphological, and popular culture plays an important part in the formation of one’s identity. This research aiming to use Cantopop as a medium to examine the formation and posi- tioning of the identity of Post-80s generation of Hong Kong, and to study the impact of Can- topop on this unique generation of Hong Kong. Eight in-depth interviews were conducted with participants born between 1980 - 1989. Despite the small sampling, it is found that Can- topop did play an important role in shaping the identity of Post-80s generation in Hong Kong. It is a common language and self-reflecting medium of this generation. It is also discovered that among the Post-80s generation, there are two cohorts (1980-1984 & 1985-1989) which have different views against the Cantopop and identity issues. This research topic is worth to further develop with larger sampling data and may extend to comparison among different generations of Hong Kong in the future. Thank you for your kind advices and guidance on my presentations. I would always remember the happy memento on 25 June 2016, during the final presentation of our Capstone projects - when I was singing a Cantopop to demonstrate its importance in shaping one’s identity, Dr. Gary Wong rang the bell on the table to indicate the time was up - the timing could not be more perfect and laughters were all around the classroom. It ended my presentation in the highest note and that was definitely one of the best memories of the class. All of the eight participants voluntarily spare their own time to fa- cilitate this research with precious and valuable insights. Although the interviews were long and exhaustive, none of them raised any complain and all of them were so helpful and en- couraging. Page !6 1.0 INTRODUCTION 1.1 Background of This Research (Photo source: NOW.com) It all started with a soft drink promotion campaign in the summer of 2015, Hong Kong. By that time, I just finished my first year programme of Master of Social Sciences in Media, Culture & Creative Cities and I had to start thinking about my Capstone Project. As the social atmosphere of the city was so suffocating and some of my friends around start- ed to question about their identity issues, I want to do a research relating to identity, about the Hong Kong Pop culture and Hong Kong identity of a generation. I went into a convenience shop and saw that new Coca-Cola promotion campaign, which involved 72 well-known Can- topop lyrics (covering love, family, motivation and encouragement through the 80s to 00s). It is collective memory across different generations of Hong Kong. Those well-known lyrics of Cantopop were printed on Coca-Cola cans and it became so unique that people are hunting those specially designed cans from one shop to another. From the social media platform, you could see people were collecting those lyrics cans and used those lyrics to represent / express Page !7 themselves. It made me realised that Cantopop is not only part of the Hong Kong Pop cul- ture, it is also a collective memory, a common language, and an identity. Originating in the 1970s, Cantopop reached its height of popularity in the 1980s and 1990s.

F. LEE ABSTRACT: Most observers argued that press freedom in Hong Kong has been declining continually over the past 15 years. This article examines the problem of press freedom from the perspective of the political economy of the media. According to conventional understanding, the Chinese government has exerted indirect influence over the Hong Kong media through co-opting media owners, most of whom were entrepreneurs with ample business interests in the mainland. At the same time, there were internal tensions within the political economic system. The latter opened up a space of resistance for media practitioners and thus helped the media system as a whole to maintain a degree of relative autonomy from the power centre. However, into the 2010s, the media landscape has undergone several significant changes, especially the worsening media business environment and the growth of digital media technologies.

If merely delineating the sky-high synopsis of the city, the ups and downs, high highs and low lows are at once evidently remarkable: a collective struggle for survival in the post-war years, tremendous social instability in the 1960s, industrial take-off in the 1970s, a growth in economic confidence and cultural arrogance in the 1980s and a rich cultural upheaval in search of locality before the handover. The early 21st century might as well sum up the development of Hong Kong, whose history is long yet surprisingly short- propelled by capitalism, gnawing away at globalization and living off its elastic schizophrenia.

This paper reviews the status of Cantonese in Hong Kong under this policy with respect to the levels of government, education and curriculum, considers the consequences of neglecting Cantonese in the school curriculum, and discusses the importance of large-scale surveys for language policymaking. It always results in raising the status of the regional vernacular, but the lan- guage of the ex-colonist still maintains a very strong influence on certain domains. Taking Singapore as an example, English became the dominant language in the work- place and families, and the local dialects were suppressed. It led to the degrading of both English and Chinese proficiency levels according to scholars’ evaluation (Goh 2009a, b).

Commercial broadcaster, as a proprietary organization, is believed to emphasize on maximizing the profit while the public broadcaster, without commercial considerations, is usually expected to achieve some objectives or goals instead of making profits. Therefore, the contribution by public broadcaster to the society is usually expected to be different from those by commercial broadcaster. However, the public broadcasters are in crisis around the world because of their unclear role in actual practice. Many politicians claim that they cannot find any difference between the public broadcasters and the commercial broadcasters and thus they asserted to cut the budget of public broadcasters or even privatize all public broadcasters. Having this unstable situation of the public broadcasting, the role or performance of the public broadcasters in actual practice has drawn much attention from both policy-makers and scholars. "I would like to apologize to all the ladies involved in the scandal and their families for all their sufferings. I am sorry," the Vancouver native said at a press conference attended by hundreds of media. Chen said he would leave the Hong Kong entertainment industry indefinitely after fulfilling all existing contracts. He did not give a specific time frame for his withdrawal. He added he would devote himself to charity work in the coming months. The photo scandal started with the uploading of hundreds of sexually-explicit photos starting on Jan. 27 featuring Chen and various Hong Kong starlets. The pictures have spread like wildfire on the Internet ever since. Chen said at the press conference the photos were stolen and distributed without his approval. "These photos had not been shown to people and were never intended to be shown to anyone," he said. Hong Kong police were trying to find the first releaser of the photos and had made several arrests in connection with them.

On the other hand, external circumstances such as the rise of social media also create a wide array of opportunities for K-pop to broaden its global appeal. The research explores the ways how the interplay between external circumstances and organizational strategies has jointly contributed to the global circulation of K-pop. The research starts with providing a general descriptive overview of K-pop. Following that, quantitative methods are applied to measure and assess the international recognition and global spread of K-pop. Next, a systematic approach is used to identify and analyze factors and forces that have important influences and implications on K-pop’s globalization. The analysis is carried out based on three levels of business environment which are macro, operating, and internal level. While digital effects are tools to assist the action performance of non-kung fu actors, Dragon Tiger Gate (2006), a comic-turned movie, becomes a case-in-point that it applies digitality to Yen, a celebrated kung fu star who is famed by his genuine martial dexterity. In the framework of remediation, this essay will explore how the digital media intervene of the star construction of Donnie Yen. As Dragon Tiger Gate reveals, technological effects work to refashion and repurpose Yen’s persona by combining digital effects and the kung fu body. While the narrative of pain and injury reveals the attempt of visual immediacy, the hybridized bodily representation evokes awareness more to the act of representing kung fu than to the kung fu itself.

These issues manifested in Hong Kong films of the time in the form of film characters’ language ideologies. An analysis of six films reveals three themes: (1) the assumption of mutual intelligibility between Cantonese and Putonghua, (2) the importance of English towards one’s Hong Kong identity, and (3) the expectation that Mainland immigrants use Cantonese as their primary language of communication in Hong Kong. The recurrence of these findings indicates their prevalence amongst native Hongkongers, even in a post-handover context. 1 Introduction The handover of Hong Kong to the People’s Republic of China (PRC) in 1997 marked the end of 155 years of British colonial rule. Within this socio-political landscape came questions of identification and intergroup relations, both amongst native Hongkongers and Mainland Chinese (Tong et al. 1999, Brewer 1999). These manifest in the attitudes and ideologies that native Hongkongers have towards the three most widely used languages in Hong Kong: Cantonese, English, and Putonghua (a standard variety of Mandarin promoted in Mainland China by the Government).

    Digital Culture in Hong Kong Canadian Communities: Literary Analysis of Yi Shu’s Fiction Jessica Tsui-yan Li York University Hong Kong Canadian Communities have particularly expanded between the 1980s 191 and the mid-1990s, in part owing to a new wave of Hong Kong immigration to Canada in recent years. This large-scale migration is mainly due to Hong Kong’s dynamic geopolitical and economic relationships with Mainland China and Canada as a result of its transformation from a British colony (1842-1997) to a postcolonial city. Hong Kong Canadian migration and communities offer important contribu- tions to the sociohistorical, political, and economic heterogeneity of multicultural Canadian communities. As a trading centre on Mainland China’s south coast, Hong Kong was an important stop on the travels of Chinese migrants to Canada from the late eighteenth century to the early twentieth century. With the hardworking ethics of its population and its role as a window to the rest of the world for Mainland China, Hong Kong gradually developed from a fishing port into an industrial city and then became an international financial centre, making the most of an economic uplift that began in the 1970s. With the advance of global capitalism, Hong Kong has progressively established its distinctive judicial, financial, medical, educational, transportation, and social welfare systems, and gradually produced a local culture and a sense of identity. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) play a significant role in shaping contemporary diasporic communities, such as those of Hong Kong Canadians.
