Tate Modern Course - Tate Intensive: Art Matters

A dynamic programme that focuses on key questions facing art galleries and museums in the twenty-first century

Brought together in a spirit of exchange and collaboration, Tate Intensive participants will be asked to make specific contributions to discussions during the week, drawing on their own experience and case studies from their respective organisations. Keynote speakers will include members of Tate staff, representatives of the Plus Tate network of UK visual art institutions, and other leading museum professionals and artists. Daily visits to exhibitions and collection displays at Tate Modern, Tate Britain and other London cultural institutions complement workshops and discussions held in the new Switch House at Tate Modern.

Participants

Tate Intensive comprises around 25 selected participants from around the world. We are actively seeking a diverse range of professionals working in art galleries, museums and other cultural institutions at different stages of their careers in a wide range of countries. This intimate group of culture professionals is encouraged to share knowledge and exchange ideas concerning their current practice, as well as discussing new approaches to curating, programming, audience development, governance and digital technology. Participants join an ongoing network with potential for future collaborations.

Programme

The 2017 Tate Intensive programme highlights a number of key questions concerning museums and galleries in the twenty-first century:

Why do art institutions have an important role in society? What forms of content might institutions produce and display? Who do institutions engage with and who feels excluded? How are ethical issues shaping programmes and policies? When will changes to current practices be enacted?

Previous keynote speakers on the Tate Intensive programme have included Maria Balshaw, Frances Morris, Farshid Moussavi, Cornelia Parker and Nicholas Serota.

Fees, travel and accommodation

The programme costs £1500, which includes lunch and refreshments during the six days. Participants are required to pay their own travel costs to and from London, as well as accommodation and all other expenses. A number of full and partial bursaries covering course fees, travel and accommodation are available, and will be awarded on merit. Applicants who wish to be considered for a bursary should include an additional statement (max. 500 words) with their application, outlining how the Tate Intensive programme could contribute to their professional development.

Application process

There are no formal entry requirements, though we strongly recommend that applicants have at least two years’ experience working with or in an art gallery, museum or related cultural institution. Applications close at 12.00 (GMT) on 4 December 2016. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will take place in the week beginning 23 January 2017. Successful candidates will be informed by the end of February. Prospective participants are asked to submit the following information:
