Syllabus for MUS 444—Instrumental II 2 Credit Hours Fall 2000

I. COURSE DESCRIPTION

Advanced study in conducting for the instrumental director in education or in church ministry. Includes preparing musical scores for conducting in both settings. Attention will be given to specific instrumental techniques as well as understanding orchestration as it affects conductor and ensemble. Prerequisite: MUS 333

II. COURSE GOALS

This course is designed to help the student prepare for a position as a public school or church instrumental director. The student will demonstrate—through simulated rehearsal format, testing, and discussion—the knowledge and skills required of the instrumental director.

III. COURSE OBJECTIVES

As a result of successfully completing this course, the student will be able to:

A. Objectives 1. perform effective conducting technique including, but not limited to: a. preparatory beat. b. attacks and cutoffs. c. fermata, grand pauses and tempo changes. e. multi-meter changes. f. phrasing and dynamics. g. active, passive gestures—impulse of will. 2. articulate specific instrumental problems as related to individual instrumental families. 3. identify the different characteristics of Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th-century music as it relates to conducting. 4. incorporate a philosophy of conducting appropriate for public, private, and church musical setting.

B. Objectives for Students in Teacher Preparation Programs The teacher candidate will know the following: 1. the proper grip of the baton. 2. basic beat patterns in a variety of styles. 3. appropriate hand and facial gestures and other body language. 4. how to use preparation beat, attacks and releases, fermata and tempo changes, multi- meter changes, phrasing and dynamic, and active/passive gestures.

The Teacher Candidate will be able to do the following: 1. show competent conducting techniques including musical nuance by conducting in a simulated rehearsal format. 2. show competent conducting techniques including musical nuance by correctly responding to written tests.

3. evaluate personal conducting assignments and the conducting of other members of the class.

The course Goals for the Teacher Preparation Program meets the "competency-based" requirements established by the Oklahoma Commission on Teacher Preparation. This course meets Subject Matter Competency # 12 for Vocal/General.

Subject Competency--Instrumental/General: 12. Has competency in conducting techniques, including the ability to show musical nuance (subtle distinction or variation).

V. POLICIES AND PROCEDURES

A. University Policies and Procedures 1. Attendance at each class or laboratory is mandatory at Oral Roberts University. 2. Double cuts will be assessed for absences immediately preceding or following holidays. 3. Excessive absences can reduce a student’s grade or deny credit for the course. 4. Students taking a late exam because of an unauthorized absence will be charged a late exam fee. 5. Students and faculty at Oral Roberts University adhere to all laws addressing the ethical use of others’ materials, whether it is in the form of print, video, multimedia, or computer software.
