TRACK ATHLETES OF THE WEEK NOTABLE Sharika Nelvis, Arkansas State, Senior, Memphis, Tenn. WKU’s Ramsey Continues Assault on Record Book Nelvis placed first in the 60-meter hurdles at the Indiana Relays (2/1) by posting an 8.17 Ramsey kept her torrid start to the season up, shattering her own school records in both the shot put and weight throw. Ramsey launched the shot put 53-feet-9 ¼ inches (16.39m) on Saturday to set her and WKU’s time, which is among the top 10 times nationally and is presently the second-fastest new standard, a mark that ranks 15th in the NCAA this season. Ramsey heaved the weight 66-feet-9 ¾ inches time in the Sun Belt Conference this season. She presently holds the conference’s top (20.37m), breaking the school record she set last week with a toss of 65-feet-5 ½ inches at the Vanderbilt Indoor time of 8.15 set at the Kentucky Invitational (1/17). Three Mavs Take Titles at Varsity Apartments Invitational A trio of Mavericks picked up individual wins to highlight UT Arlington’s stay at the Varsity Apartments Invitational. Clayton Vaughn, UT Arlington, Senior, Sulphur Springs, Texas Warhawks Record Trio of First-Place Finishes at KMS Invitational UTA’s Clayton Vaughn won the 60m for the second time in as many meets on Saturday at Juniors Teona Glave and Hillary Kirwa and sophomore Dusan Makevic each took first-place in their respective the Varsity Apartments Invitational. His preliminary time in the 60m (6.66) is the best in events to propel the ULM track & field team at the KMS Invitational. Glave, who holds the ULM school record the Sun Belt by .10. Panthers Fare Well in Birmingham Georgia State’s team had one first place, five seconds, and four thirds to go with personal bests at the KMS Invitational. GSU’s first-place came by senior Anna Sinclair in the 3,000m in 10:12.79 to top the 10 runners. Seconds came from senior Wande Brewer in the 200m (24.93), Tatiana Colbert in the 400m (57.36), Niamh Kearney in the mile (5:05.14), Alex Johnson in the high jump (1.65m) and the 4x400-relay team (3:50.65). Ragin’ Cajuns Have Field Day at McNeese Justin Victor claimed his third first-place finish in the weight throw in as many meets and the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns track and field team earned six first-place performances, including a pair of 1-2-3 efforts in field events, at the McNeese State Cowboy Indoor II meet on Friday at the McNeese State Rec Complex. Victor claimed the title in the weight throw with a facility-record toss of 66 feet, 2.25 inches, breaking the previous mark (65-2.25) set by Southeastern Louisiana’s Adonson Shallow in 2010. Victor’s throw highlighted a 1-2 finish in the event for the Kashef Daniel, Arkansas State, Senior, Scarborough, Trinidad & Tobago Cajuns with Landon Carroll finishing second with a throw of 52-6.75. Daniel produced a conference-leading effort of 7-0.5/2.15m in the high jump at the Indiana Relays (2/1), which ties a Trinidad and Tobago National Record and represents a NCAA-I qualifying mark. Daniel currently ranks tied for 22nd among the national indoor qualifiers and has recorded the conference’s three best jumps this indoor season.
