One of my favorite clips was from TV's "" (in 2000?) from the episode from Season 1 entitled "Water Park" where Bea play Dewey's babysitter and they perform ABBA's song "Fernando". The character, Mrs. White played by Bea, is whisked away in an ambulance. I uncovered a clip online here (it's about 15 minutes into the video, so you can fast-forward if you want). It seems a fitting remembrance for her.

We'll Miss Bea From Broadway to television, Bea Arthur was a character. MICHAEL WILSON | The Ledger (2001) Buy photo Bea Arthur brought her brand of life and humor to Lakeland in 2001.

By JESSICA SUAREZ POPMATTERS.COM movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/andthentheresbea/messages/2995?l=1 2/17 3/25/13 andthentheresbea : Messages : 2995-3026 of 3145 Published: Monday, April 27, 2009 at 12:01 a.m. Last Modified: Tuesday, April 28, 2009 at 5:06 a.m. Bea Arthur's death Saturday marks the passing of one of television's distinctive voices. Her portrayal of 's outspoken cousin on "" led to a spin-off of her own with "Maude," and her on "" stands out even among the three other wonderful characters on the series.

Beginning her career on the stage, she starred in Broadway productions of "" and most famously in "," a role she reprised for the 1974 film version with . Her place in television history was assured during her guest starring episodes on "All in the Family."

Maude was a liberal and a feminist and the perfect counterpart to blustery . Her appearance on the series was so striking that upon first seeing her in "All in the Family," the network realized that Arthur had created a character with a life of her own and one who warranted her own series.

"Maude" was another of 's groundbreaking shows and it made television history with Maude's decision to have an after unexpectedly pregnant in her 40s.

Winning an Emmy for her portrayal of Maude, Arthur was still on the cusp of what would become, for many, her most recognizable role.

What's more, her character on "The Golden Girls" was said to be a "Bea Arthur type" - no better casting could have been made.

In 1985, , then president of NBC, pitched a series about a group of older women living in and dealing with friendships, family and their love lives. "The Golden Girls" was born and the network had an instant hit in the antics of Dorothy, Sophia, Rose, and Blanche.

Running for seven seasons, Arthur, , Rue McLanahan and created an unorthodox family by playing with conventions of age and gender and turning them on their ear.

In fact, it's Arthur's interpretation of a divorced substitute teacher living with her mother and two friends in Miami that marks one of the all-time great female characters on television.

Dorothy was the outspoken, quick-witted counterpart to sweet, naive Rose and egotistical, man-crazy Blanche. She was never at a loss for words and could deliver a dig like no other. Her sarcasm and her deadpan delivery were impeccable. It's no wonder that Arthur really hit her stride with the character.

On "The Golden Girls," Arthur's Dorothy could be everything from highly confident to desperate; mothering and nurturing to acerbic and stinging. Yet throughout she was always funny and charming. Jokes were frequently made about her appearance - her height and deep voice were often played for laughs - but the viewer never felt like Dorothy couldn't take it, or even that Dorothy ever took it all that seriously.

Arthur was fearless in her portrayal of Dorothy. Rue McLanahan said as much in response to Arthur's passing: "Thirty-seven years ago she showed me how to be very brave in playing comedy. I'll miss that courage and I'll miss that voice." McLanahan, who starred in both "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" with Arthur, should know just how bold Arthur could be.

The surviving members of "The Golden Girls" (Estelle Getty died last year after a long battle with dementia) had participated in commentaries and bonus features on the DVD releases of the series and their memories of their time together clearly shows just how much fun they had with the material.

Arthur even says "I sometimes wake in the middle of the night and think of a line and I start laughing and can't stop. There were just so many goodies."

Television afforded Arthur a place to really shine in creating characters that went beyond the quick laugh or easy joke. Both "Maude" and "The Golden Girls" effortlessly cemented Arthur's place in television history.

I have been extremely ill since around the end of 1999. I'm not able to do a lot of things, in spite of being only 42 now. At times I have to stay in bed a lot due to illness. THe Golden Girls has been my safe place to go when I'm feeling bad for a long time. I own ever season on DVD and watch them whenever I need a pick me up. I also watch them all the time with my nieces and nephews (ages 3 to 17). I cannot tell you how much enjoyment and happiness and laughter has been brought to my life by all the women, but most especially Bea. I've procrastinated for years and never did get a chance to write to her and tell her how important she was in my life. Her attitude of never giving up and knowing you can do anything you put your mind to showed not just in her acting but in her life. My nieces and nephews have not only enjoyed watching the Golden Girls but also were very interested in the lives of all the women. Bea was an inspiration.... she will be greatly missed!!

I started college in Sept of 84 and didn't have a lot of time for TV while I was in college due to going to classes full time and working but tried to catch it when I could, but still haven't seen a lot of the episodes. I got a great deal on seasons 1 to 7 on EBAY and have a couple really long flights coming up and bought a portable dvd player with a 12 hour life so I should catch up soon with every show:)

I really wish they would put more seasons of Maude on DVD. I used to record it when it was in syndication in and that was a real lift me up for me. I was born in 66 so I really didn't get to see the many of her shows when it was on TV and have to rely on reruns and the Season 1 DVD. I love how she would say whatever was on her mind. Some of the stuff she says seems sort of risque to say right now on TV so I can imagine some people got really offended in the 70s:)

You should also get the movie Mame on DVD. While Bea wasn't the main star she did have a significant role in the movie and it is a movie that always cheers me up as well. I have broadways forbidden treasures and it has her and Angela doing "bossom buddies" and that is something else that always cheers me up as well.

Why would Bea be buried next to Estelle? Yes, they were co-workers for 7 years. But they were in no way related in real life. And even cremated, you can still bury the urn, you know. It also might have been a personal choice of hers. I don't really understand your reaction. And you do realize that Dorothy was a fictional character, right? The Golden Girls may be all a fan knows of Bea (I'm more of a "Maude" fan, myself), but it wasn't her whole life! Or her real life.

If there exists an afterlife, or beyond realm, or whatever, I hope she's enjoying it with her beloved dogs, and anyone else who meant something to her.

Second off, I understand she wouldn't have been buried next to Estelle, I was only trying to stress my fan-ship (if there's such a word) to them BOTH with that statement! I mean wow, true, they were "co-workers" for 7 years, but to the person who wrote that, I want you to remember that Bea was also a friend to Estelle. Did she not say so herself during an interview?? PLEASE CORRECT ME IF I AM WRONG! What I stated was MY OPINION! I would've loved to have been able to place flowers at her grave if it'd been possible, hence the cremation comment. Good greatness people! I'm sorry. I won't post again. Lastly, to the Dorothy being a fictional character, I don't think 3/4's of us here would've come to know the name BEA ARTHUR had she not played the roles of FICTIONAL CHARACTERS! Yes, I am more than sure, no, I KNOW she was a great and positive human being, but the beautiful person she was, more than likely wouldn't have been noticed by the majority of us IF SHE HADN'T PLAYED FICTIONAL CHARACTERS! Anyway, she was a great, beautiful, bashful and yet point blank person. THERE! Now, to the rude ones, as 'Maude' would say "GOD'LL Get YOU FOR THAT!" movies.groups.yahoo.com/group/andthentheresbea/messages/2995?l=1 10/17 3/25/13 andthentheresbea : Messages : 2995-3026 of 3145

For those of you who have not seen Mame, where Bea plays the fabulous Vera, I for sure recommend it. It is awesome. I just got my copy in the mail today, that I was able to find on Amazon.Com for under $10. Just had to own it!

It's fine. No hard feelings. The common tread here is that we all love Bea! :-)

Agreed! I'm afraid I've only watched it once, because I can't endure the rest of it-the non Bea parts. mainly the singing.

The memorial for Bea at the Majestic Theatre today was wonderful. It was two hours of sheer joy being a part of the personal remembrances of Bea by her family and close friends, and the media presentation added so much to the celebration. Angela Lansbury was the perfect MC for this occasion. It was a privilege for me to be there. God bless you, Bea!

This was an article on Bea Arthurs memorial: http://evilbeetgossip.film.com/category/bea-arthur/

I can't believe Rue told the story of Bea calling Betty the C word LOL. Frank Decaros show should be good today since I think he went to the memorial yesterday.

I would like to encourage anyone here that is a bea fan and can afford to make a donation to the Ali Forney Center in her memory to do so. It is a great cause and I am glad to see the new center will be named in her memory and the family decided on such a good cause for her memorials to be made to. Their website is: http://www.aliforneycenter.org/campaign.html

Any pictures? It would be great to see.

Also... I've been reading the discussion about the memorial on Access TGG here: http://www.couch-potatoes.co.uk/forums/index.php?s=&showtopic=6854&view=findpost\ &p=123210

Jim dear,

Yes, I was at the memorial with one of my friends, and we met Melissa and three other gentlemen who were standing near us in the line. We had great conversations. The celebration of Bea's life was so wonderful. I was grateful I could be there to enjoy it.
