The Woodfield Crier – June 2007

Community Entrance – As you turn on to Hearthstone from Hanover Street one cannot help but smile. The day’s traffic experience and troubles fade away as you drive along the shaded tree lined boulevard, complete with baskets of cascading flowers and American flags. Continue through the subdivision and you are met with smiles and waves from friends and neighbors working in their yards or walking their pets. How fortunate we are to live in such a beautiful friendly community.

Thank you - The Memorial Weekend Pot Luck was a great success. The food was both abundant and wonderful! A large thank you is extended to George and Gary for providing the grills, and for standing in the hot sun while cooking everyone’s burgers, dogs, and chicken. We would also like to thank Ryan Homes for their generosity in providing desserts. There was a nice variety that appealed to everyone’s taste.

Yoga – The clubhouse DVD player is not functioning. Until that is resolved we will have to put the Yoga class on hold, unless someone would like to offer the temporary use of their basement. We have the DVD, we have a few interested participants - we just need temporary quarters. Please contact Connie King if you would like to volunteer your home.

Community Library If you are in need of some summer reading, please remember to check our club house. We have a nice selection of donated books, as well as books on tape.

Sun Shine Club – Have you enjoyed a card from the Sunshine Club? Are you a member? It’s never too late to join. The cost is $1.00 a month per person - $12.00 for the year. All collected money is used to purchase cards, stamps, and anniversary balloons. If you would like to join, please contact Jewelie Hicks.

Auxiliary – The Goodwill Fire Company Ladies Auxiliary - Pemberton is seeking new members and volunteers. If interested, please contact Stephanie Sager-Carroll at 894-4552 or 894-2571. If she doesn’t answer, please leave a message; she will return your call.

Upcoming Trips Jeanne O’Keefe, our Social Coordinator, has put out a LAST CALL for the casino trip scheduled for July 22nd. She is also taking reservations for the American Music Theater/Luncheon on December 2nd to Lancaster, Pa. You may contact Jeanne at 894-9321.

Vendors/Crafters Wanted – Yes, summer has just begun, but fall will be here before you know it. Let’s do some holiday shopping right at our club house. Do you have an item/craft you make that you would like to sell? Perhaps you bake. (This would be wonderful for those of us who do not). Rental fees would be $10.00 per space, with vendors retaining all their profits. We would like to get a feel for how many people would be interested and coordinate a date. Please contact Jeanne O’Keefe or Connie King as soon as possible to let them know if you are interested.

Correction – I regret to say that a typo was made in last month’s newsletter. Jeanne O’Keefe’s correct e-mail is [email protected]. I apologize for any inconvenience.

Clubhouse Activities – Reminder - Jeanne is planning a 4th of July celebration at the clubhouse from 1 to ? The cost is $8.00 per resident. Family members are welcome to attend for an extra $5.00 each. Children five and under are free. Frog Rock - Have you heard our evening chorus? If you have not, you are missing a wonderful experience. Every evening at approximately 8:30 P.M. we are serenaded by some of nature’s most interesting creatures. As I stand on the deck listening to the melodious symphony I am instantly transported to a time that does not seem all that long ago.

I remember warm summer evenings when lightning bugs lit the early night sky, and my friend and I ran bare foot through the grass, fruitlessly trying to catch a fire fly in our small hands. When our mother’s called we would bid each other good night and head home, usually to a freshly baked pie and the voice of Byron Saam emanating from the radio.

Dad would almost always be sitting in his favorite chair, with his ear finely tuned to the Phillies’ announcer. I’d take my home made goodie from the kitchen table and sit on the living room floor next to him, listening as he lamented what seemed to be the fate of the Phillies. How he longed for the return of the “”: , , Granny Hamner, , , . What happened to them? They were so great in 1950, but this was 1953 and there was no pennant to be. “Maybe, just maybe, next year,” he’d say with a hopeful grin and a pat on my back.

Yes, something as tiny as a frog can evoke strong warm memories. If you haven’t heard the chorus, please hurry, they are only here for a limited engagement. What I wouldn’t give to spend one more night sitting on the floor listening to my dad. Happy Father’s Day and thank you to our wonderful Dad’s.

Association Meeting - The next association meeting is scheduled for July 23. Please plan to attend. At the conclusion of our board meeting Mayor Simpkins will take the floor to give a brief history of Pemberton Borough and to answer any question you may have concerning the township.
