For the second season in a row, the UEFA Champions League group stage brings together Borussia Dortmund and Real Madrid CF – and precedent suggests the holders could be in for a tough evening in Germany. • Madrid have never won in Dortmund – and despite recent successes, have historically struggled in away games against sides – although Zinédine Zidane's side are already on the board in Group H having beaten APOEL FC 3-0 on matchday one. For Dortmund, 3-1 losers at Tottenham Hotspur FC in their first fixture, a positive result is crucial to prevent them slipping further off the pace. Previous meetings • The clubs' record from six previous meetings on German soil is three wins for Dortmund, none for Madrid and three draws. • In last season's group stage, both contests finished 2-2. Madrid twice led in Dortmund, through and Raphaël Varane; Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and, in the 87th minute, André Schürrle replied for Thomas Tuchel's Dortmund. • The teams at the BVB Stadion Dortmund on 27 September 2016 were: Dortmund: Bürki, Piszczek, Ginter, Papastathopoulos, Schmelzer, Guerreiro (Emre Mor 77), Castro, Weigl, Götze (Schürrle 58), Dembélé (Pulišić 73), Aubameyang. Madrid: Navas, Carvajal, Ramos, Varane, Danilo, Kroos, Modrić, James Rodríguez (Kovačić 69), Bale, Benzema (Morata 88), Ronaldo. • Dortmund secured first place in the section by coming from 2-0 down to snatch a point at the Santiago Bernabéu on matchday six. Karim Benzema's double (28, 53) had put Madrid in command, but goals from Aubameyang (60) and Marco Reus (88) gave the visitors a valuable point. • They also met in the 2013/14 UEFA Champions League quarter-finals, Madrid prevailing 3-2 on aggregate en route to lifting the trophy. Gareth Bale, Isco and Ronaldo earned Carlo Ancelotti's Madrid a 3-0 first-leg lead before Dortmund, coached by Jürgen Klopp, narrowed the deficit with a 2-0 victory in Germany through two Reus strikes. • The line-ups for that second leg on 8 April 2014 were: Dortmund: Weidenfeller, Piszczek (Aubameyang 81), Friedrich, Hummels, Durm, Kirch, Mkhitaryan, Jojić, Reus, Grosskreutz, Lewandowski. Madrid: Casillas, Carvajal, Pepe, Ramos, Fábio Coentrão, Alonso, Illarramendi (Isco 46), Modrić, Di María (Casemiro 73), Bale, Benzema (Varane 90+1). • The teams also met in the group stage of the 2012/13 competition when Dortmund finished above Madrid with the help of a 2-1 home win – Robert Lewandowski and Marcel Schmelzer scoring either side of Ronaldo – and a 2-2 draw in Madrid where Reus again featured on the scoresheet. • The clubs were reunited in the semi-finals that season and Dortmund won the first leg 4-1 at home, Lewandowski getting all four goals and sending his side through despite a 2-0 reverse in Madrid where Benzema and Sergio Ramos scored. • The line-ups for the semi-final first leg at the BVB Stadion on 24 April 2013 were: Dortmund: Weidenfeller, Piszczek (Grosskreutz 83), Subotić, Hummels, Schmelzer, Błaszczykowski (Kehl 82), Bender, Gündoğan (Schieber 90), Götze, Reus, Lewandowski. Madrid: López, Pepe, Varane, Ramos, Fábio Coentrão, Alonso (Kaká 80), Khedira, Modrić (Di María 68), Ronaldo, Özil, Higuaín (Benzema 68). • Roman Weidenfeller is the solitary survivor of the sides' meetings in the 2002/03 second group stage, when Madrid won 2-1 at the Santiago Bernabéu and then drew 1-1 in Dortmund. Zidane played in both matches. • Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc and youth-team coordinator Lars Ricken played in Dortmund's 1997/98 UEFA Champions League semi-final loss to Madrid (0-2 away, 0-0 home). Match background Dortmund • Before last season's draw with Madrid, the Bundesliga side had won their previous four home matches against Spanish visitors. Their overall record at home against Liga opposition is W7 D4 L2. • Dortmund, contesting the group stage for the 12th time and a sixth in seven years, have reached the knockout stage on their last four UEFA Champions League appearances. In 2016/17 they beat SL Benfica 4-1 on aggregate in the round of 16, subsequently losing 6-3 to Monaco over two legs (2-3 home, 1-3 away). • That home defeat by Monaco ended Dortmund's seven-match unbeaten home run in Europe (W5 D2).

• Dortmund picked up seven points at home in last season's group stage, beating Sporting Clube de Portugal 1-0 and Legia Warszawa 8-4 – the latter result the most goals in a UEFA Champions League match. Real Madrid • Zidane's charges were victorious on their last trip to Germany, winning 2-1 at FC Bayern München in last season's quarter-final first leg and going through 6-3 on aggregate. • Overall, their record in Germany is W5 D7 L19 – four of those wins coming in their last seven visits. • A 2-1 defeat at Club Atlético de Madrid in last season's semi-final second leg (4-2 aggregate) ended Madrid's six- game unbeaten away run in the UEFA Champions League (W3 D3). That was only their second loss in their last 12 away matches, the other a 2-0 reverse at VfL Wolfsburg in the 2015/16 quarter-final first leg; they won six of those matches. • Champions of Europe for a 12th time in 2016/17 – courtesy of their 4-1 final win against Juventus – Madrid will aim to become the first team since Bayern in 1976 to claim three successive European Champion Clubs' Cups. AFC Ajax (1971–73) and Madrid themselves (1956–60) are the only other sides to have won three or more in a row. • In 21 previous participations in the UEFA Champions League, Madrid have never failed to progress to the last 16. • Madrid finished second in their group in 2016/17, behind Dortmund – the first time since 2012/13 they had failed to top their section. 13 Borussia Dortmund - Real Madrid CF Tuesday 26 September 2017 - 20.45CET (20.45 local time) Match press kit BVB Stadion Dortmund, Dortmund Head coach Peter Bosz Date of birth: 21 November 1963 Nationality: Dutch Playing career: SBV Vitesse, AGOVV Apeldoorn, RKC Waalwijk, SC Toulon, Feyenoord, JEF United Chiba (twice), FC Hansa Rostock, NAC Breda Coaching career: AGOVV Apeldoorn, BV De Graafschap, Heracles Almelo (twice), SBV Vitesse, Maccabi Tel-Aviv FC, AFC Ajax, Borussia Dortmund • After three-year spells at Vitesse, RKC and in France with Toulon, the midfielder's playing career took off following a move to Feyenoord in 1991; he won the in 1992/93 and three Dutch Cups, also picking up eight caps for the Netherlands. • Bosz left Rotterdam after five years, proceeding to enjoy two Japanese stints with JEF United and also appearing in the Bundesliga for Hansa. • Having retired in 1999 aged 36, Bosz rejoined home-town club Apeldoorn as coach, winning the national amateur championship in 2002. Head-coach opportunities then came with De Graafschap and Heracles – whom he led to the top flight in 2005 – before an appointment as Feyenoord technical director in 2006. • Returning to coaching and Heracles in 2010, he kept the club in Eredivisie mid-table safety, but eventually stood down in 2013 and took charge of Vitesse for three years. Israel and Maccabi later came calling in January 2016, with the chance to work under sporting director Jordi Cruyff. • After six months in Israel, however, Bosz was back in the Netherlands, signing for Ajax. Moulding a young squad and sticking closely to the attacking, high-intensity principles laid down by Johan Cruyff, he guided the Amsterdammers to second place in the table and the UEFA Europa League final, catching the eye of Dortmund in the process. Zinédine Zidane Date of birth: 23 June 1972 Nationality: French Playing career: AS Cannes, FC Girondins de Bordeaux, Juventus, Real Madrid CF Coaching career: Real Madrid CF • Born in Marseille to Algerian immigrant parents, Zidane took his first steps towards footballing superstardom at Cannes, transferring to Bordeaux in 1992. Blossomed into a French international, scoring twice on his debut against the Czech Republic in August 1994. • Left Bordeaux after helping them reach the 1996 UEFA Cup final and joined Juventus, where he was a Serie A winner and UEFA Champions League runner-up in each of his first two seasons. Made a then world-record €78m switch to Madrid in 2001. • Inspired France to 1998 FIFA World Cup glory – scoring two headers in the Saint-Denis final against Brazil – and at UEFA EURO 2000, where he was player of the tournament; winner of the Ballon d'Or in 1998, he was also voted FIFA World Player of the Year in 1998, 2000 and 2003. • Made it third time lucky in the UEFA Champions League final by hitting a spectacular volleyed winner in Madrid's 2-1 victory over Bayer 04 Leverkusen in the 2002 showpiece at Hampden Park. Landed the UEFA Super Cup, European/South American Cup and Spanish Liga the following season. • Announced his international retirement after UEFA EURO 2004 yet returned a year later and proved inspirational at the 2006 World Cup – especially with a virtuoso display in a quarter-final triumph over holders Brazil; however, was dismissed for a headbutt on Marco Materazzi in the final against Italy, the last match of his career. • Became assistant to Carlo Ancelotti in 2013/14 – the season Madrid claimed their tenth European title. Took charge of for the next campaign, and in January 2016 succeeded Rafael Benítez as head coach, leading the club to yet another European Cup that May – the seventh to lift the trophy as player and coach. Added the UEFA Super Cup three months later, making him the fifth man to win that trophy in both guises, and finished 2016/17 by becoming the first coach to win successive UEFA Champions Leagues, also guiding Madrid to a first Liga title in five years.
