A QUICK LOOK AT TURKEY

The Republic of Turkey is a transcontinental country located mainly in Western Asia, with a smaller portion on the Balkan Peninsula in Southeast Europe. It is bordered by Greece & Bulgaria to its northwest; Georgia to its northeast; Armenia, the Azerbaijani ‘exclave’ of Nakhchivan & Iran to the east & Iraq & Syria to the south. Istanbul is the largest city but Ankara is the capital. Approximately 70 to 80% of the country's citizens identify as Turkish; Kurds are the largest minority group with estimates placing the figure at anywhere from 12 - 25% of the population.

At various points in its history, the region has been inhabited by such diverse civilizations as the Assyrians, Greeks, Thracians, Phrygians, Urartians, & Armenians. Hellenization began during the era of Alexander the Great & continued into the Byzantine era

The Seljuk Turks began migrating into the area in the 11th century & their victory over the Byzantines at the Battle of Manzikert in 1071 symbolizes the start & foundation of Turkey. The Seljuk Sultanate of Rûm ruled Anatolia until the Mongol invasion in 1243 when it disintegrated into small Turkish principalities. Beginning in the late 13th-century, the Ottomans started uniting these Turkish principalities.

After Mehmed II conquered Constantinople in 1453, Ottoman expansion continued under Selim I. During the reign of Suleiman the Magnificent the encompassed much of Southeast Europe, West Asia and North Africa & became a world power. In the following centuries the state entered a period of decline with a gradual loss of territories & ongoing wars. In an effort to consolidate the weakening social & political foundations of the empire, Mahmut II introduced a period of modernisation in the early 19th century bringing reforms in all areas of the state including the military & the bureaucracy along with the emancipation of all citizens.

In 1913, a coup d'état effectively put the country under the control of the Three Pashas. During World War I, the Ottoman government committed genocide against its Armenian, Assyrian & Greek subjects.

Following the war, the conglomeration of territories and peoples that formerly comprised the Ottoman Empire was partitioned into several new states. The Turkish War of Independence, initiated by Mustafa Kemal Atatürk and his colleagues against occupying Allied Powers, resulted in the abolition of the monarchy in 1922 and the establishment of the Republic of Turkey in 1923, with Atatürk as its first president.

Atatürk enacted numerous reforms, many of which incorporated various aspects of Western thought, philosophy & customs into the new form of Turkish government. The Kurdish–Turkish conflict, an armed conflict between the Republic of Turkey & Kurdish insurgents, has been active since 1984 primarily in the southeast of the country. Various Kurdish groups demand separation from Turkey to create an independent Kurdistan or to have autonomy & greater political and cultural rights for Kurds in Turkey.

Turkey is a charter member of the UN, an early member of NATO, the IMF & the World Bank & a founding member of the OECD, G-20 & more. After becoming one of the first members of the Council of Europe in 1949, Turkey became an associate member of the EEC in 1963, joined the EU Customs Union in 1995 and started accession negotiations with the European Union in 2005 which were effectively stopped by the EU in 2017 due to "Turkey's path toward autocratic rule".

Turkey's economic & diplomatic initiatives led to its recognition as a regional power while its location has given it geopolitical & strategic importance throughout history. Turkey is a secular, unitary, formerly parliamentary republic which adopted a presidential system with a referendum in 2017; the new system came into effect with the presidential election in 2018.

Turkey's current administration is headed by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan who has enacted measures to increase the influence of Islam, undermine many of Ataturk’s policies & restrict freedom of the press.

Hasankeyf was declared a natural conservation area by Turkey in 1981, but sadly many of its ancient archaeological sites will soon be flooded as a result of construction of the new Ilisu Dam. We travel on to Diyarbakir to see the Ten Arches Bridge on the Tigris River & to visit the Great Wall, Ulucami & Surp Grigos Armenian Church. We have dinner in our hotel & an early night. We continue on to Tumulus of Antiochos, the capital of Kommagene, where we will watch the sunset from the summit of the mountain - this ancient funerary monument was lost to memory for nearly 2000 years. We then drive on to Cendere Bridge erected by the XVI Legion in the honour of Roman Emperor Septimus Severus & visit Karakus Tumulus, a burial sanctuary. We check into our hotel, freshen up & have a relaxed dinner there. Overnight at 4-start hotel in Adiyaman (B,L,D)

Day 7: Sunday, May 30 - Adiyaman to Sanliurfa (110 km) After breakfast we drive to Sanliurfa (also called Urfa) where we will visit the Ataturk Dam which is part of the giant South East Anatolia Project. We will also tour the incredible Gobekli Tepe. Although this site is not widely known, it is one of the world’s most important current archaeological digs containing the remains of the earliest religious structures built by man that have been discovered to date. At about 11,000 - 13,000 years old, they pre-date Stonehenge, the Pyramids, pottery & writing. Some scientists believe it could be the site of the legendary Garden of Eden. In striking contrast, we will also visit the brand new state of the art archaeological museum of Sanliurfa, home of many priceless artefacts & the Haleplibahçe Roman & Aramaic mosaics. Lunch en-route. Dinner in a local restaurant with traditional treats & entertainment by local musicians & dancers. Overnight at 4-star hotel in Urfa (B,L,D)

Day 8: Monday, May 31 – Urfa to Gaziantep (140 km) After breakfast we will visit the Holy Pools of Abraham & the cave where biblical tales tell us that the Prophet Abraham was born. We then depart for Gaziantep where we will visit the stunning mosaic museum which houses a priceless collection of mosaics from the now sunken city of Zeugma, as well as the citadel and the Old Town. We will be picked up from our hotel around 4:00 a.m. & returned around 8:00 a.m. (Balloon flight will cost approximately USD$300; if the weather is poor we will have another opportunity the following day). After breakfast at the hotel we set out on an exciting day of touring through this spectacular region visiting such attractions as the open Air Museum consisting of five Byzantine Orthodox churches & Monk's Valley(Pasabagi) where we will see the famous “fairy chimneys.” After lunch we visit Avanos, famous for its pottery, Dervent Valley & if time permits enjoy sunset on a hill overlooking Cappadocia. Dinner in a local restaurant featuring an amazing performance by traditional ‘whirling Dervishes’. Overnight at 4-star hotel in Cappadocia (B,L,D)

5

Day 11: Thursday, June 3: Tuzgolu to Ankara (310 km) We make an early start & have a long drive today to get to Ankara & enjoy the scenery en-route. On the way we will visit Derinkuyum, one of the region’s underground cities which are defining features of Cappadocia. Derinkuyu is believed to have been excavated as early as the Hittite period but was considerably expanded & was last used as a refuge for Christians hiding from Arab armies in 600 AD. While only a part of the city is open to visitors, we will descend eight levels below ground where you will be able to see granaries, storage vats, meeting rooms & a church – it’s a fascinating place but not recommended if you suffer from claustrophobia! From Derinkuyu we proceed to the floor of the Ihlara Valley where we take a gentle walk (about 2 kms) followed by lunch. We pause for photos at the Selime Monastery which is carved from the rockface & overlooks spectacular scenery, then visit one of Turkey’s most important stops along the ancient Silk Road, Sultanhan Caravanserai. We continue on past the Great Salt Lake of Tuz Golu to Ankara, arriving a little later than usual. We check into our hotel where we have dinner & an early night. Overnight at 4-star hotel in Ankara (B,L,D)

Day 12: Friday, June 4 - Ankara Today we go sightseeing in Ankara, the capital of Turkey - a very old city with various Hittite, Phrygian, Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine & Ottoman archaeological sites. Our first stop will be Anitkabir, Ataturk’s Mausoleum, which occupies an entire hill overlooking the city. It is intended to encapsulate the major architectural styles of Anatolia’s ancient civilizations, act as a central point for the celebration of Turkey’s independence & commemorate Kemal Ataturk, the Republic’s founder. After lunch we visit the old citadel overlooking Ankara & stroll through the Museum of Anatolian Civilisations. While not a large museum, it is special because of the building in which it is housed & the extraordinary nature of its exhibits. We enjoy dinner in a local restaurant this evening. Overnight at a 4-star hotel in Ankara (B,L,D)

Day 13: Saturday, June 5 - Ankara to Istanbul (450 km) After breakfast we will catch the high speed rail service for Haydarpasha in Kadikoy, Istanbul (4 hours). Overnight at boutique hotel in Istanbul (B, D)

Day 16: Tuesday, June 8 - Istanbul After breakfast we catch the ferry to Eminonu, then connect to the municipal ferry for a fascinating two-hour cruise. The ferry travels the entire length of the Bosphorus Straits to its ‘neck’ where it joins the Black Sea at the last stop on the Asian side, Anadolu. Just beyond Anadolu, Kavagi is the place where ancient mythology places the Symplegades - the clashing rocks that blocked the path of Jason’s Argonauts in their quest for the Golden Fleece. We enjoy a delicious lunch in a popular seafood restaurant before catching the ferry back to Eminonu. On our return we visit the Egyptian Spice Bazaar & the New Mosque (rather ironically named as it was completed in the 1660’s)!
