Finally, I wish to thank my husband Paul, my parents, family, and friends for supporting me through my PhD. 4 Abstract In this thesis, I explore the theologies of culture emerging from Hull, one of the UK’s most marginalised and deprived cities, in 2017, when Hull was the UK’s City of Culture. Using visual research methods and grounded theory method, I interviewed 20 church leaders from different denominations, both before and after Hull was City of Culture 2017. My research explores these participants’ understandings of culture: their concept of culture as “high culture”, culture as lived experience, and culture as “other”, and how they saw Hull as “cultureless” because it lacked this “high culture”. I explore how the City of Culture project’s understanding of culture as the ‘brightest and best’ in human experience played into these concepts of culture. My research examines my participants’ theologies of culture, both before and after City of Culture 2017. Sitting within Hull’s context of pain and shared loss, I argue that my participants had an overwhelmingly positive approach to Hull’s culture. They saw God working in and through Hull’s culture in 2017, building self-esteem, joy, community and creativity in the city, to allow the people of Hull to flourish. I explore the literature of theologies of culture, and reject the use of models to explore theologies of culture in favour a more complex mapping of the interrelation of gospel and culture. I argue that my participants show a broadly socialist approach to culture, gently liberative, and unconsciously Trinitarian theologies of culture. My participants’ theologies of culture, regardless of their denomination, echo Timothy Gorringe’s understanding of culture as ‘furthering humanity’, enabling people to flourish and live life in all I Abstract In the context of the transformative ambitions of event-based, culture-led urban regeneration, this thesis interrogates the production of cultures of gender equality in City/ Capital of Culture mega-events. Inspired by Donostia/ San Sebastián as European Capital of Culture in 2016 and analysed in detail in Hull’s celebration of the UK City of Culture in 2017, the investigation seeks to understand the relevance of socio-cultural values in the celebration of art, culture and heritage in the urban context. The investigation analyses the City/ Capital of Culture mega-events through a conceptualisation of their socio-cultural significance, which is informed by liminal and carnivalesque event characteristics. Relating to the politics, practices and perceptions of gender equality in mega-events, the research is based on an ethnographic study of six equality- themed events in the field sites of Hull and Donostia/ San Sebastián. The analysis develops from a relational reading of the two sites: due to its strong emphasis on negotiations of socio-cultural values, Donostia/ San Sebastián informs my research focus in Hull.

    Hull History Centre: George Thorp Diaries L DIGT George Thorp Diaries 1911-1940 Biographical Background: Born 31 July 1847. George Thorp was a member of the Wesleyan Society, a trustee of the Newland Methodist Church, a member of the Temperance Society and on the Education Committee of the Sunday School Union. He was also a Property agent, Estate agent and Surveyor with offices in De Grey Street and Lowgate, Hull. He collected rents for private landlords and the Hull Corporation, as well as organising repairs, and there are numerous references in the diaries to collecting rents, paying taxes and rates, and banking sums of money. The surveying work George Thorp carried out included plans for a staircase at the offices in Lowgate, plans for three floors of the Halford Cycle premises, and he also drew plans on behalf of Gelder and Kitching, Surveyors. The business was continued after George Thorp's retirement by his son, Joseph E. Thorp.
