The story of Elsa’s struggle seems to have resonated particularly well with some audiences as the children’s film has amassed a large queer following over the years. Indeed, many fans have adopted the film’s now famous song “Let It Go” as a “coming-out” anthem. The erotophobia surrounding discourses of childhood has made the queer study of works of literature and film aimed at children more difficult and therefore rare. In this analysis, I seek to rectify this fact by looking at Frozen, and more specifically its main character Elsa, with a queer lens. To do so, I use Alexander Doty’s theory of queer reading, Clare Whatling’s “looking lesbian” strategy, and Judith Butler’s theory of gender performativity. I, here, aim to question heteronormative assumptions in this adaptation (queer reading), unveil its possible lesbian desires (“looking lesbian”) and deconstruct the idea of gender (gender performativity) within the film. Results of my analysis show that Frozen can be read as queer. Intertextual knowledge of Idina Menzel’s career (the actress behind Elsa) and of the history of the monster figure in film (especially the lesbian vampire) allows for a queer reading of Elsa. Moreover, a closer look at the film’s use of the symbol of the door, both in the animation and in the text, reveals that Frozen’s narrative journey for Elsa can be summarised as a “coming-out” story, the doors representing the metaphorical closet door. Furthermore, my examination of Elsa’s gender performance shows that the Disney character exhibits iii an exaggerated display of femininity reminiscent of the gender performance of a Femme. Finally, Elsa’s independence from men and her close ties to her sister contribute to giving the film a queer feel. iv Lay Summary In this study, I examine the Walt Disney Company’s movie Frozen and its main character Elsa and argue that the film can be read as a queer story. To this end, I analyse Elsa with the help of the reading strategies of Alexander Doty (queer reading) and Clare Whatling’s (“looking lesbian”), two reading methods which posit that a text is not inherently queer or straight but can be read as either; as well as Judith Butler’s gender performance theory which suggests that our idea of masculinity and femininity are socially constructed and are not traits with which we are born.     INTRODUCTION: • Duality arguments suggest that the superconductor phase transition is in the 3d XY model universality class, but with inverted temperature [1]. Thus, XY model symmetric (broken) phase ↔ normal (supercon- ducting) phase of the superconductor. • Duality predicts that the Abrikosov vortex tension T scales with the XY model exponent νXY = 0.6723. The penetration depth λ (or ′ inverse photon mass) is also argued to scale with exponent ν = νXY. • However, universality has not been unambiguously observed: ′ - High-Tc YBa2Cu3O7−δ experiments [3, 4] observe ν ≈ 0.3 . 0.5 - Monte Carlo simulations of the Ginzburg-Landau theory appear to favour ν′ ∼ 0.3 [5]. • A problem for the Monte Carlo simulations is that the duality is ex- pected to be valid only in a very narrow temperature range around the critical temperature. • In order to avoid the problem above, we study a special limit of Ginzburg-Landau theory, the frozen superconductor (FZS) (an integer-valued gauge theory), which is exactly dual to the XY-Villain model at all temperatures. Thus, the transition in FZS is bound to be in the XY model universality class. Studying the critical quantities of FZS can shed light on the problems faced in the Ginzburg-Landau theory simulations. For human beings they have been a source of fear and superstition, their significance acquiring religious connotations all over the world. The passing of time has modified this ancient horror and the myth has changed little by little, most of the time being softened, giving birth to diverse conceptions and representations that differ a lot from the evil spawn – originating in myth, legend and folklore – that ancient people were afraid of. Abstract Harry Benshoff has boldly proclaimed that ‘horror stories and monster movies, perhaps more than any other genre, actively invoke queer readings’ (1997, p. 6). For Benshoff, gay audiences have forged cultural identifications with the counter-hegemonic figure of the ‘monster queer’ who disrupts the heterosexual status quo. However, beyond identification with the monstrous outsider, there is at present little understanding of the interpretations that gay fans mobilise around different forms and features of horror and the cultural connections they establish with other horror fans online. In addressing this gap, this thesis employs a multi-sited netnographic method to study gay horror fandom. This holistic approach seeks to investigate spaces created by and for gay horror fans, in addition to their presence on a mainstream horror site and a gay online forum. In doing so, this study argues that gay fans forge deep emotional connections with horror that links particular textual features to the construction and articulation of their sexual and fannish identities. In developing the concept of ‘emotional capital’ that establishes intersubjective recognition between gay fans, this thesis argues that this capital is destabilised in much larger spaces of fandom where gay fans perform the successful ‘doing of being’ a horror fan (Hills, 2005).
