doi: 10.5216/rpt.v49i1.62089 ORIGINAL ARTICLE INFLUENCE OF FOOD TYPE AND CALCIUM SUPPLEMENTATION ON GROWTH, OVIPOSITION AND SURVIVAL PARAMETERS OF Biomphalaria glabrata AND Biomphalaria straminea Wandklebson Silva da Paz1, Rosália Elen Santos Ramos1, Dharliton Soares Gomes1, Letícia Pereira Bezerra1, Laryssa Oliveira Silva2, Tatyane Martins Cirilo1, João Paulo Vieira Machado2 and Israel Gomes de Amorim Santos2 ABSTRACT Schistosomiasis is a parasitic disease caused by Schistosoma mansoni whose intermediate host is the snail of the genus Biomphalaria. This snail is geographically widespread, making the disease a serious public health problem. The purpose of this study was to analyze the growth, reproductive rates and mortality of B. glabrata and B. straminea in different calcium concentrations and food types. Freshly hatched snails stored in aquariums under different dietary and calcium supplementation programs were studied. Under these conditions, all planorbids survived, so there was no mortality rate and 79,839 eggs of B. straminea and 62,558 eggs of B. glabrata were obtained during the 2 months of oviposition. The following conditions: lettuce + fish food and lettuce + fish food + powdered milk resulted in the highest reproductive rates. In addition, supplementation with calcium carbonate and calcium sulfide in three different concentrations did not significantly influenced the amount of eggs or ovigerous masses. Thus, this study shows that changes in diet are crucial for the survival/oviposition of these planorbids, being an important study tool for population control. Calcium is also a key factor in these conditions, but more work is necessary to better assess its effect on snail survival. ABSTRACT Schistosomiasis remains a major parasitic disease, endemic in large parts of South America. Five neotropical species of Biomphalaria have been found to act as inter- mediate hosts of Schistosoma mansoni in natural populations, while others have been shown to be susceptible in experimental infections, although not found infected in the field. Among these potential intermediate hosts, Biomphalaria peregrina represents the most widespread species in South America, with confirmed occurrence records from Venezuela to northern Patagonia. In this study, we report the southernmost record for the species at the Pinturas River, in southern Patagonia, which finding implies a southward reassessment of the limit for the known species of this genus. The identities of the individuals from this population were confirmed through morphological examination, and by means of two mitochondrial genes, cytochrome oxidase subunit I (COI) and 16S-rRNA. Report of the Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA)Training Workshop, St. Kitts & Nevis under the Regional Implementation of the Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment for the Climate Change Adaptation in the Eastern Caribbean Fisheries Sector Project (CC4FISH) November 18-19, 2019 Basseterre, St. Kitts and Nevis 1. Introduction The Climate Change Adaptation in the Fisheries Sector of the Eastern Caribbean Project (CC4FISH) is being implemented from 2017-2020 by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO)/ Western Central Atlantic Fishery Commission (WECAFC) and national fisheries authorities in the seven project countries, Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis (SKN), Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago. CC4FISH aims to increase resilience and reduce vulnerability to climate change impacts in the Eastern Caribbean fisheries sector through introduction of adaptation measures in fisheries management and capacity building of fisherfolk and aquaculture farmers. It is funded by the Global Environment Facility. The Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) has been contracted by FAO to undertake the regional implementation of a Vulnerability and Capacity Assessment (VCA) in coastal and fishing communities under CC4FISH. CANARI’s work involves implementation of VCAs in 14 coastal and fishing communities across four target countries, Grenada, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Vincent and the Grenadines and Trinidad and Tobago, from October 2019 to November 2020. It directly contributes to Component 1 of CC4FISH, which aims to increase understanding and awareness of climate change impacts and vulnerabilities for effective adaptation and resilience building in the Eastern Caribbean fisheries sector. As a key first step, CANARI is supporting the establishment of local field teams and providing training on planning and implementing VCAs in each of the four target countries. -

UK Overseas Territories
INFORMATION PAPER United Kingdom Overseas Territories - Toponymic Information United Kingdom Overseas Territories (UKOTs), also known as British Overseas Territories (BOTs), have constitutional and historical links with the United Kingdom, but do not form part of the United Kingdom itself. The Queen is the Head of State of all the UKOTs, and she is represented by a Governor or Commissioner (apart from the UK Sovereign Base Areas that are administered by MOD). Each Territory has its own Constitution, its own Government and its own local laws. The 14 territories are: Anguilla; Bermuda; British Antarctic Territory (BAT); British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT); British Virgin Islands; Cayman Islands; Falkland Islands; Gibraltar; Montserrat; Pitcairn, Henderson, Ducie and Oeno Islands; Saint Helena, Ascension and Tristan da Cunha; South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands; Turks and Caicos Islands; UK Sovereign Base Areas. PCGN recommend the term ‘British Overseas Territory Capital’ for the administrative centres of UKOTs. Production of mapping over the UKOTs does not take place systematically in the UK. Maps produced by the relevant territory, preferably by official bodies such as the local government or tourism authority, should be used for current geographical names. National government websites could also be used as an additional reference. Additionally, FCDO and MOD briefing maps may be used as a source for names in UKOTs. See the FCDO White Paper for more information about the UKOTs. ANGUILLA The territory, situated in the Caribbean, consists of the main island of Anguilla plus some smaller, mostly uninhabited islands. It is separated from the island of Saint Martin (split between Saint-Martin (France) and Sint Maarten (Netherlands)), 17km to the south, by the Anguilla Channel. -

Emphasis is given to the analysis of B. oligoza, B. schrammi and B. amazonica. The RFLP profiles obtained using this enzyme were highly distinctive for the majority of the species and exhibited low levels of intraspecific polymor- phism among specimens from different regions of Brazil. However, B. peregrina and B. oligoza pre- sented very similar profiles that complicated their identification at the molecular level and suggested a very close genetic similarity between the two species. Others enzymes including HaeIII, HpaII, AluI and MnlI were tested for their ability to differentiate these species. For B. amazonica three variant profiles produced with DdeI were observed. Previous studies using phylogeny, morphological and molecular taxonomy showed that some populations studied were Biomphalaria cousini instead of Biomphalaria amazonica. Three differ- ent molecular profiles were observed that enabled the separation of B. amazonica from B. cousini. The third profile showed an association between the two and suggested the possibility of hybrids between them. Therefore, the aim of this work was to investigate the hybridism between B. cousini and B. amazonica and to verify if the hybrids are susceptible to Schistosoma mansoni. Crosses using the albinism factor as a genetic marker were performed, with pigmented B. cousini and albino B. amazonica snails identified by polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism. This procedure was conducted using B. cousini and B. amazonica of the type locality accord- ingly to Paraense, 1966.
