The Wainuiomata Lions junior and New Zealand 16’s and 18’s representative has been the focus of NRL clubs for some time, he was first contracted in the NRL to the Wests Tigers from Keebra Park SHS. He gained a second chance in the NRL when he was signed by the Melbourne Storm in the lead up to the 2010 season on a three year deal. He eventually ended up at the Canberra Raiders that year and played in the Raiders NYC team in 2010, 2011 and 2012 alongside fellow Sea Eagle Michael Chee Kam. Baker has spent the last two seasons with Canberra affiliate club Mounties. He has made 5 appearances in the NSW Cup this year but has spent most of the season in their Ron Massey Cup line up.As a big man in the middle and at just 22 years-old Baker has not yet reached his peak, as he moves on to his fourth NRL club he should be desperate to make a claim for a spot in the top squad. Hopefully an arduous off season under Geoff Toovey and Don Singe will have him ready to compete with other fringe first grade candidates as they try to fill the voids left by the departures of big men Jason King, Brent Kite, George Rose, Richie Fa’aoso and Joe Galuvao over the last 2 seasons. “Got a trade?” NZRL National Youth Tournament-review & results Akarana Falcons have swept both titles on offer in thrilling finishes at the “Got A Trade?” NZRL National Youth Tournament at Rotorua’s Puketawhero Park. Halfback Dylan Tavita provided the inspiration with time winding down to steer his 15s side to a 17-16 win over Counties Manukau, successfully defending the title they won last year. With only a few moments left, the Falcons trailed Stingrays 16-10, but Tavita scored a try and converted to lock the scores at 16-16. Then, as the match manager reached for the final hooter, Tavita was on the spot again to slot a field goal from 30 metres to steal victory. He was duly named Man of the Match for his efforts. The Stingrays had made most of the running through the first half, leading 10-6 at the break, but were unable to withstand Akarana’s fast finish and the brilliance of Tavita down the stretch. Wing Steven Marsters had two tries for Counties, which took out the “Got A Trade? Got It Made!” Team Fairplay Award. Stingrays fullback Etene Nanai-Seturo was also named Vodafone Warriors 15s Player of the Tournament. Akarana were more in control of the older division finale, leading their South Auckland rivals all the way. But, ahead 10-0 at halftime, they allowed the Stingrays back into the contest. The Falcons were just 16-14 up with a few minutes remaining, but gained some breathing room with a try to Junior Ugapo in the right corner. At 20-14, Counties still had a chance to tie the scores and were camped on the tryline when the final hooter sounded, sealing double heartbreak for Stingrays supporters. Prop Amoni Tufui was one of Akarana’s tryscorers and earned Man of the Match honours. Counties second row Tamait Ioane-NIko was named Vodafone Warriors 17s Player of the Tournament, while Wellington Orcas took the “Got A Trade? Got It Made!” Team Fairplay Award. Meanwhile, the New South Wales-based Taurahere Kiwis never allowed the NZ 18s in the second of their two “tests”, running out 30-10 winners. Cronulla fullback Jamayne Isaako converted all five of his team’s tries - including one of his own - in deteriorating conditions, while Penrith prop James Fisher-Harris was Man of the Match. The Taurahere had taken out the first encounter 20-18 on Monday, after trailing 18-4 early. Sir Peter Leitch Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 21st September 2016 Newsletter #140 By David Kemeys Former Sunday Star-Times Editor, Former Editor-in-Chief Suburban Newspapers, Long Suffering Warriors Fan RIKEY DID the Vodafone Warriors get hammered at the weekend. The constant theme was that we Cneed a player clearout. That is hardly groundbreaking stuff, but what was, was that players were named. Hugh McGahan singled out Manu Vatuvei and Ben Matulino, arguing both had failed to live up their status as two of our highest paid players. The former Kiwi captain said Warriors coach Stephen Kearney could make a mark by showing the pair the door, and proving to the others that poor performances won't be tolerated. “Irrespective of his standing, Manu Vatuvei has got to go,” McGahan told Tony Veitch. “And again, irre- spective of his standing, Ben Matulino has got to go. They have underperformed. If you're going to make an impact I'd say that's probably the two players that you would look at.” Bold stuff, and fair play to the man, he told it like he saw it. Kearney, on the other hand, clearly doesn’t see it the same way, since he named both in the Kiwis train-on squad, and while he acknowledged they had struggled this year, he backed himself to get the best out of them. In fact he went further, he said it was his job. “That's my responsibility as the coach, to get the individuals in a position so they can go out and play their best.

Sir Peter Leitch’s Mad Butcher Club AT MT SMART STADIUM, HOME OF THE MIGHTY VODAFONE WARRIORS 8th October 2015 Newsletter #93 No advertisements are paid for in this newsletter. What A week FLEW OUT with Air NZ in time to go the Dally M Awards – where the best of the INRL season is celebrated. It should have been renamed the Jonathan Thurston Show, and you can underline how good he really is after that final. I owe a special vote of thanks to Vodafone Warriors CEO Jim Doyle and NRL boss Dave Smith, for organis- ing the treatment I received. It was terrific to catch up with all the Kiwis in the NRL, and men like Cameron Smith and Billy Slater from the Storm. Well Done THe Menzies Hotel Not surprisingly, I had a huge amount of work to do ahead of the 2005 Kiwis Reunion and fair play to the Menzies Hotel. They could not do enough for me. I totally recommend the place, the staff were awesome, nothing was too much trouble- and I am the first to admit I can be a bit demanding – but they totally got how important it was to me, and were right into having the Kiwis as guests. Grand Final Lunch Date I had the superb Carbine Club Grand Final lunch on Thursday, another chance to meet some of the good people I’ve been lucky enough to know through league. I was especially pleased to be there for two men I greatly admire, and who have both been huge servants of the Vodafone Warriors.

And if there is a player who polarises opinion more than Manu, I have yet to meet him. So I better declare that I will not hear a bad word said about the bloke. Now it seems the big fellah is going to take up an opportunity to play with Salford, a British club in the UK Super League. Big Manu’s contract with us doesn't expire until the end of the 2018 season, but reports from Guardian rugby league reporter Aaron Bowler say he has signed with the Salford Red Devils. He has been a bit player of late, suffering from a range of injuries, and it is clear other players are more fa- voured nowadays, but it is easy to forget it is only a few years ago we were celebrating Manu becoming the first NRL player to score 10 tries or more every year for a decade, and that he was International Winger of the year in 2008 after the Kiwis’ won the Rugby League World Cup.
