Whose House with Amanda Keller WHOSE HOUSE WITH AMANDA KELLER WHOSE HOUSE – KATE CEBERANO Amanda visits Melbourne’s Butterfly Club and is served by one of the most incompetent waitresses she’s ever met – singer Kate Ceberano. Kate is recreating her first job for Amanda but as customers Red Symons and Russell Gilbert discover its lucky she’s a great singer. FAST FACTS • Kate Ceberano is an Australian singing institution - over her 30 years in the industry, she has released 24 Albums, been a three-time ARIA Award Winner, with a staggering count of ten ARIA Award nominations, and racked up over twenty other awards and accolades. • Of her 24 albums 13 have gone gold or platinum. • She’s just been inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall Of Fame – the first ever woman songwriter to be inducted. • Previous inductees include Don Walker, Vanda and Young, Richard Clapton and the Little River Band. • As a songwriter her biggest hit was the song “Pash” which went gold in 1998. • The first song Kate wrote was “Brave” the title track of her first album in 1988 and a hit single. • She came to public notice as a seventeen year old singer in the funk group I’m Talking who formed in 1983. • I’m Talking’s debut album Bear Witness went to 14 on the ARIA national charts spawning three hit singles. • She’s won Dancing With The Stars in 2007. • She also played Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar alongside John Farnham and Jon Stevens in 1992. • Her first job was as a waitress when she was 15. It was at a café in St Kilda called the Black Cat. • The manager of the café said to her “Kate, you make terrible coffee but you have an amazing tush” • Her first big break was on a TV talent show called Search For A Star when she was fifteen. She had to lie about her age to get on the program. She sang a Marcia Hines song but didn’t win the show. • Her first band was called Exposay and they once supported the Divinyls. • “Kensai Road” released in 2013 is her first album of new material in ten years. • Kate’s book “I’m Talking” was released in 2014 this year. • In 2010, Kate was crowned Queen Of Moomba! And Molly Meldrum was crowned King! • Kate’s husband is film director/cinematographer. They have 1 daughter, Gypsy. • She has a half brother called Bey but she never found about him till she was in her twenties. Her mother had adopted him out. Her mother was only 12-13 when she had him. THE BUTTERFLY CLUB • The Butterfly Club is a small theatre in the heart of Melbourne. They have plenty of shows, award-winning foyer bars, and an enormous collection of kitsch. • Established in 1999 the Club is a great place to see young rising stars, household names, and the odd big fancy superstar who misses the feeling of performing to an intimate crowd. • They are open six days a week all year-round, and have between two and five shows every night. The Hey Hey team enjoyed music mixed with spontaneous banter and fun'n'games.     THE ALLNITERS will always be remembered for their big sound, cracking tunes and eccentric exuberance. Mischievous and a little bit cheeky, they’re the most successful ska act in Australian history and they’re back: bigger, bolder and brassier than ever after over 30 years, proving once and for all that THE ALLNITERS are Allriters … and evidently ska’d for life. It all began back in 1980 when a group of eight lads and one rude girl gravitated towards charismatic founding member Marty Fabok as the inner-city mod scene was percolating. They nattered, laughed and riffled through their favourite reggae, blues; disco, Jamaican blue beat and rock steady vinyl collections. Jaunty brass and tight rhythm sections were forged and THE ALLNITERS had officially arrived, donning their porkpie hats, braces and Doc Martens and chomping at the bit to burn up the live circuit with upbeat rhythms, walking bass-lines and contagious jocularity. The band cut its teeth as a live act at Sydney’s legendary Sussex Hotel and went on to become one of the hardest touring acts in the country. Attendance records were broken, as were stages, with audience members sometimes storming the stage to out-number the band, egged on by those spilling out the doors, thus threatening structural collapse. Regardless, THE ALLNITERS never failed to amuse, with hysterical, quick-witted onstage banter between vocalists Peter Travis and Brett Pattinson rivaling that of The Two Ronnie’s. The band rapidly became as renowned for their energetic sense of playfulness as for their larger than life new wave sound.

Premised on the notion that mediated politics is now understood “in new ways by new voices” (Jones, 2005: 4), and appropriating what McNair (2003) calls a “chaos theory” of journalism sociology, this thesis explores how two different contemporary Australian political television programs (Sunrise and The Chaser’s War on Everything) are viewed, understood, and used by audiences. In analysing these programs from textual, industry and audience perspectives, this thesis argues that journalism has been largely thought about in overly simplistic binary terms which have failed to reflect the reality of audiences’ news consumption patterns. The findings of this thesis suggest that both ‘soft’ infotainment (Sunrise) and ‘frivolous’ satire (The Chaser’s War on Everything) are used by audiences in intricate ways as sources of political information, and thus these TV programs (and those like them) should be seen as legitimate and valuable forms of public knowledge production.

    Kate Ceberano stages mini I’m Talking reunion while curating a new festival in Daylesford Cameron Adams, National music writer, Herald Sun August 27, 2018 2:22pm KATE Ceberano is staging a mini reunion of her band I’m Talking later this year. Ceberano is a co-curator of the Live. Love. Life festival in Daylesford from November 14 to 18. The event will see Ceberano and Zan Abeyrante performing I’m Talking songs with local dance band Sex on Toast. “Zan and I haven’t sung together in 30 years, so it’s going to be ace,” Ceberano said. “It’s just a little pop-up show, we’ll do a few tunes and dance our brains out. Zan and I have reconnected since the reissue of (I’m Talking’s 1986 album) Bear Witness a few months ago. Solid Gold - Jeff Apter & Philip Morris, Metcalfe Theatre, State Library of NSW, 5th December 2015] [Dressed in a black shirt and dark jeans, grey-haired Philip Morris sits beside his interviewer Jess Apter, a bald man dressed casually] [JEFF APTER] Thank you. Before starting, I want to say I was really fortunate to be able to work with Philip on this book. [Jeff Apter holds up a coffee table book] [JEFF APTER] And it was one of the more interesting exercises, wasn't it? Because we were given a directive to come up with... Was it 200 photos? ..for this book. [PHILIP MORRIS] That's right. [JEFF APTER] And Philip's archive is so fantastic and so rich, that I think we got it down to, what, 600? [PHILIP MORRIS] Yeah. [Audience laughs] [JEFF APTER] Was it 600 to start with? It was something like that. And it's staggering, really. It's a really great document of Australian rock history at a really interesting turning point. So to get it down to this... It's begging for a second edition, by the way. There's so many great photos. So it was a real honour to be able to... to do that. It was a lot of fun. [PHILIP MORRIS] Yeah, it was. [JEFF APTER] We actually had built into our contract... Our agreement was an understanding that we would never work in a boring situation.
