WHOSE HOUSE WITH AMANDA KELLER WHOSE HOUSE – KATE CEBERANO Amanda visits Melbourne’s Butterfly Club and is served by one of the most incompetent waitresses she’s ever met – singer Kate Ceberano. Kate is recreating her first job for Amanda but as customers Red Symons and Russell Gilbert discover its lucky she’s a great singer. FAST FACTS • Kate Ceberano is an Australian singing institution - over her 30 years in the industry, she has released 24 Albums, been a three-time ARIA Award Winner, with a staggering count of ten ARIA Award nominations, and racked up over twenty other awards and accolades. • Of her 24 albums 13 have gone gold or platinum. • She’s just been inducted into the Australian Songwriters Hall Of Fame – the first ever woman songwriter to be inducted. • Previous inductees include Don Walker, Vanda and Young, Richard Clapton and the Little River Band. • As a songwriter her biggest hit was the song “Pash” which went gold in 1998. • The first song Kate wrote was “Brave” the title track of her first album in 1988 and a hit single. • She came to public notice as a seventeen year old singer in the funk group I’m Talking who formed in 1983. • I’m Talking’s debut album Bear Witness went to 14 on the ARIA national charts spawning three hit singles. • She’s won Dancing With The Stars in 2007. • She also played Mary Magdalene in Jesus Christ Superstar alongside John Farnham and Jon Stevens in 1992. • Her first job was as a waitress when she was 15. It was at a café in St Kilda called the Black Cat. • The manager of the café said to her “Kate, you make terrible coffee but you have an amazing tush” • Her first big break was on a TV talent show called Search For A Star when she was fifteen. She had to lie about her age to get on the program. She sang a Marcia Hines song but didn’t win the show. • Her first band was called Exposay and they once supported the Divinyls. • “Kensai Road” released in 2013 is her first album of new material in ten years. • Kate’s book “I’m Talking” was released in 2014 this year. • In 2010, Kate was crowned Queen Of Moomba! And Molly Meldrum was crowned King! • Kate’s husband is film director/cinematographer. They have 1 daughter, Gypsy. • She has a half brother called Bey but she never found about him till she was in her twenties. Her mother had adopted him out. Her mother was only 12-13 when she had him. THE BUTTERFLY CLUB • The Butterfly Club is a small theatre in the heart of Melbourne. They have plenty of shows, award-winning foyer bars, and an enormous collection of kitsch. • Established in 1999 the Club is a great place to see young rising stars, household names, and the odd big fancy superstar who misses the feeling of performing to an intimate crowd. • They are open six days a week all year-round, and have between two and five shows every night. The Hey Hey team enjoyed music mixed with spontaneous banter and fun'n'games. Paradoxically, Red became one of the shows most endearing performers despite being the heartless and sarcastic judge in the weekly "Red Faces" segment. http://www.laurenbergman.com.au/red_symons.htm RUSSELL GILBERT • Since his beginning as a butcher, Russell has toured the world performing comedy, hosted his own television shows, been part of a ratings winning breakfast radio team, competed as a celebrity contestant on a range of reality programs, headlined with Seinfeld’s Jason Alexander, and dabbled as a food critic for radio. • Russell has written and performed in the Comedy Company for Network 10, received a Logie nomination for Best Comedy performer, was an essential part of the Hey Hey It’s Saturday team, starred in his own Russell Gilbert Show on the Nine Network, hosted the national radio broadcast Russell Gilbert Live, toured in the U.S. with Russell Crowe and his band, became a regular on Triple M’s the Cage and co-hosted with Livinia Nixon on the Nine Network series Bark Off. He has appeared as a celebrity guest on programs including Joker Poker and Temptation and proved he could hold a tune on the Seven Network’s, It Takes Two’ with Wendy Matthews and Network Nine’s Celebrity Singing Bee for charity.
