European Scientific Journal August edition vol. 8, No.18 ISSN: 1857 – 7881 (Print) e - ISSN 1857- 7431 A HISTORICAL SURVEY OF SOCIO-POLITICAL ADMINISTRATION IN AKURE REGION UP TO THE CONTEMPORARY PERIOD Afe, Adedayo Emmanuel, PhD Department of Historyand International Studies,AdekunleAjasin University,Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Nigeria Abstract Thepaper examines the political transformation of Akureregion from the earliest times to the present. The paper traces these stages of political development in order to demonstrate features associated with each stage. It argues further that pre-colonial Akure region, like other Yoruba regions, had a workable political system headed by a monarch. However, the Native Authority Ordinance of 1916, which brought about the establishment of the Native Courts and British judicial administration in the region led to the decline in the political power of the traditional institution.Even after independence, the traditional political institution has continually been subjugated. The work relies on both oral and written sources, which were critically examined. The paper, therefore,argues that even with its present political status in the contemporary Nigerian politics, the traditional political institution is still relevant to the development of thesociety. Keywords: Akure, Political, Social, Traditional and Authority Introduction The paper reviews the political administration ofAkure region from the earliest time to the present and examines the implication of the dynamics between the two periods may have for the future. Thus,assessment of the indigenous political administration, which was prevalent before the incursion of the colonial administration, the political administration during the colonial rule and the present political administration in the region are examined herein.However, Akure, in this context, comprises the present Akure North, Akure South, and Ifedore Local Government Areas of Ondo State, Nigeria. -

It gives a brief description on the prospect of industrial fisheries in the State and proceeds further to identify the major fish and shrimp resources within the coastal waters. It dosis briefly on the introduction of industrial fishing in 1973 when the State Government invited Japaneese Company to carry out a joint exploratory shrimp fishing venture and also the government's oferte to acquire a stern trawler for exploratory fishing. The contributions made by the Seastate Seafoods Company, the Eyib's Nutritional Food and the Arawak Fishing Companies towards the increase in the number of fishing fleet in the State are noted. the major causes of the decline in the industrial fisheries are briefly discussed. These include the management problems, inadequate tinancing, lack of civalified personnel to operate the vessels, poor uaíntsnance facility and lack of supporting infrastructure. it discusses the effects of the development of offshore oil on coastal fisheries, The recommendations include supervised credit, development of basic infrastructure and boat building, standardising cquipment for fishing vessels andprotection of our coastRi waters. Socio-Economic Factors Influencing Poverty Among Rural Households in Onicha Local Government Area, Ebonyi State, Nigeria

Eze1*, N.E. Odoh2, O.E. Igwe2 and C.J. Mgbanya3 Received 8 March 2019, Revised 18 May 2019, Accepted 24 June 2019, Published online 30 June 2019 Abstract The study examined the socio-economic factors influencing poverty among rural households in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi state, Nigeria. The study adopted multistage random and purposive sampling techniques to select 120 household heads. Primary data used for the study were collected using structured questionnaire. The data were analysed with the aid of means, percentage and frequency count and OLS multiple regression model. The result indicated that the households spent an average of N31,250 monthly to take care of their families and other essential personal needs. The result of the socio-economic characteristics showed that majority (53.3) of the respondents were females. The mean age was 36 years with majority (64.2%) married while an average of 6 persons per household was recorded. The predominant occupations were farming (36.0%) and civil service (35.8%). The households cultivated a mean farm size of 3.8 hectares, the mean monthly income was N19,720 while their average monthly expenditure amounted to N31,250. Moreover, 73.3% of the respondents belonged to one social organization or the other with over 90.0% of them having acquired various forms of formal education. -

Comparative Analysis of Public and Private Borehole Water Supply Sources in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State

Okon Civil Engineering Department Faculty of Engineering University of Uyo Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria Abstract Comparative analysis of public and private borehole water supply sources in Uruan Local Government Area of Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, was conducted in order to examine their qualities. A total of 13 water samples collected from 10 randomly selected private and 3 functional public boreholes in the area were analysed using standard analytical techniques and instruments. Most of the physicochemical parameters of samples from the two sources were within the acceptable limits of the World Health Organisation (WHO) for drinking water. Eight different bacteria species were isolated and identified. They include Escherichia coli (18.75%), Bacillus subtilis (15.625%), Streptococcus faecalis (15.625%), Proteus vulgaris (12.50%), Klebsiella aerogenes (12.50%), Micrococcus varians (9.375%), Clostridium perfringens (9.37%) and Staphylococcus aureus (6.25%). Total viable count on private borehole water samples ranged from 1.6x103 to 5.5x103cfu/ml while that of the public was 9x101cfu/ml. In the private source, E.coli ranged from 1x100 to 4x100cfu/100ml, whereas 4x100 to 3.4x101cfu/100ml was recorded for the coliforms. Streptococcus faecalis and Clostridium perfringens ranged from 1x100 to 3x100cfu/100ml and 1x100 to 2x100cfu/100ml respectively, and did not meet the approved drinking water standard. There was no growth of indicator organism in samples from the public boreholes.
