I am excited about this year, and look forward to working with each of you. As you read over this syllabus with your student; please make note of any questions that you have concerning this information. I hope that when you have completed studying the syllabus, you will have a strong understanding of what will be required from the student, as well as what the student can expect from me. I want to personally invite each parent to take an active role in helping the student, and myself, have a productive and successful experience in class this year. The last page of the syllabus is the individual student contract, which must be returned to me, signed by both the parent, and student. This gives me a written confirmation that both the parent and student have read the syllabus, understand procedures, rules, consequences, and will abide by them. So please read each page of the syllabus carefully before signing the contract. This contract will be kept in the student’s personal information file. This is a work-in-progress and will be occasionally appended. Apron – The portion of the stage or playing space that is downstage of the proscenium arch. In traditional proscenium-style theaters, acting on the apron was a big “no-no” because it violated the stage picture being created by the proscenium arch. Thus many older theaters have very shallow aprons. Nowadays though, Directors can’t get enough of having their actors as close to the audience as possible; despite how uncomfortable it makes some audience members. This is all done under the umbrella of ‘intimacy’ and we all know how much artists love that stuff. Sometimes the apron is referred to as the “Forestage”. (See Figure 1 and 2) Arbor – Part of a fly system. A device mounted in one of the wings, which is connected to the lift lines at the opposite end from the batten. Stage weights are stacked on the arbor to balance the load suspended from the batten. In the case of a counterweight fly system, a rope hand line is connected to the top of the arbor, passes sequentially through the head block and tension block, and is terminated to the bottom of the arbor, forming a loop. -

Each semester, TA-3 students serve as the backstage and technical crew for one of the department’s productions that take place on one of the three stages (Stuart Theatre, Leeds Theatre and Ashamu Studio) of The Catherine Bryan Dill Center for The Performing Arts or at Rites & Reason at Churchill House. These productions include shows produced by Sock & Buskin, Senior Slot, Dance Concerts, and Rites & Reason Theatre. Everything you will need to know about serving as a member of a run crew is detailed in this information sheet. In addition, (when possible) you will have a two-hour orientation prior to the beginning of the technical rehearsal process to answer any of your questions and alleviate any of your concerns. Introduction The run crew for our shows executes all backstage action. The stage managers and assistant stage managers, with the help of our designers, our costume shop manager (Ron Cesario), our technical director (Tim Hett), and many others organize backstage activity. Specifically, they figure out how to coordinate scene changes, the movement of props on and off stage, the flying in and out of curtains, costume changes, and the movement of costumes from the dressing room to the backstage area during the performance. While the stage manager remains in the lighting booth to call the show and the assistant stage managers are on headset backstage, supervising the crew and communicating with the stage manager, the run crew (you) will be the ones actually assisting with the costume changes, moving props backstage so they are ready for the actors, executing the scene changes during blackouts or in between scenes and flying the curtains in and out as needed. -

Technical Rider 3-1-2015
TECHNICAL RIDER This is a general Technical Rider that covers most of the TAKE Dance repertory. The specific needs for a given show will likely be less than what is included here. It will be our pleasure to customize our technical requests to the extent possible in order to meet your needs. A copy of this rider signed by the Presenter and Resident Technical Director, must be returned with the contract. TAKE Dance Director of Touring and Production must provide written approval of any changes or modifications of these technical requirements. TAKE Dance travels with a Stage Manager and Lighting Designer/Production Manager. The Stage Manager’s duties include company management, stage management and wardrobe supervision. CONTACT INFORMATION Takehiro Ueyama C: 646-345-9677 [email protected] TECH TIME The standard TAKE Dance requirements are an 8-hour day before day of show, and then 8 hours, day of show for a total of 16 hours of tech time in the theatre prior to the first performance. This tech time should start at least 36 hours prior to the first performance. PLEASE NOTE: Dancers must have access to the stage two hours before curtain time, and one hour before rehearsals. A final schedule will be worked out between the Director of Touring and Production and Presenter’s Technical Director. TAKE Dance will strive to be as flexible as possible in determining the schedule. If sufficient time cannot be arranged, Presenter agrees to pay the house crew’s overtime and/or meal penalties in order to complete load in for the program. -

The Uses of Animation 1 1 The Uses of Animation ANIMATION Animation is the process of making the illusion of motion and change by means of the rapid display of a sequence of static images that minimally differ from each other. The illusion—as in motion pictures in general—is thought to rely on the phi phenomenon. Animators are artists who specialize in the creation of animation. Animation can be recorded with either analogue media, a flip book, motion picture film, video tape,digital media, including formats with animated GIF, Flash animation and digital video. To display animation, a digital camera, computer, or projector are used along with new technologies that are produced. Animation creation methods include the traditional animation creation method and those involving stop motion animation of two and three-dimensional objects, paper cutouts, puppets and clay figures. Images are displayed in a rapid succession, usually 24, 25, 30, or 60 frames per second. THE MOST COMMON USES OF ANIMATION Cartoons The most common use of animation, and perhaps the origin of it, is cartoons. Cartoons appear all the time on television and the cinema and can be used for entertainment, advertising, 2 Aspects of Animation: Steps to Learn Animated Cartoons presentations and many more applications that are only limited by the imagination of the designer. The most important factor about making cartoons on a computer is reusability and flexibility. The system that will actually do the animation needs to be such that all the actions that are going to be performed can be repeated easily, without much fuss from the side of the animator. -

Reliable | Professional | Credible | FOCUSED Lighting 102 2 Music Man, Grove City College The field of entertainment lighting was once limited to theater, film and television, but has grown to include retail, display, photography, education, worship services, corporate events and trade shows. This article will provide some of the basic principles and techniques of entertainment lighting. We refer to entertainment or stage lighting in general terms, to pertain to the varied applications mentioned above. Of course, there is more than one way to approach entertainment lighting. However, what follows is basic lighting theory and practice that is recognized by our industry. Reliable | Professional | Credible | FOCUSED Lighting 102 3 FUNCTIONS OF STAGE LIGHTING The following criteria should be used to determine if stage lighting is necessary and effective. VISIBILITY Visibility is a very important function of stage lighting. The audience should be able to see exactly what you want them to see, or not see those things that should remain hidden. Therefore, we might rename this function as “selective visibility.” An example of selective visibility can be found in the play, Wait Until Dark by Frederick Knott. A blind woman is terrorized by a murderer hiding in her apartment. To even her odds against him, she smashes all of the light bulbs thus plunging him - and the audience - into darkness.
