This is an hour-by-hour recount of one of the most pivotal conflicts of the 20th century. Take a closer look at how this desperately needed victory came about through the design of U. RESIDENTS’ CORNER

STAFF WITH GRATITUDE By The Family of Maj Gen Abraham (Abe) Dreiseszun On behalf of Abe Dreiseszun’s wife, Rose, and daughters, Trudy Shay Petty, Marilyn Kaufman (son-in-law Aaron) and Cheri London (deceased), please accept our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to the many wonderful friends and staff at Blue Skies West for your thoughtful and kind expressions of sympathy and condolences at this sad and difficult time. We are grateful for the special stories

7 Deadline: Tuesday, Nov 19 @ Noon [email protected] Next Publication Date: Wednesday, Nov 27 shared with us about both Rose and Abe as to how they touched the lives of so many in such a positive and meaningful way. As a devoted husband, beloved father, cherished grandfather and great grandfather, and loyal friend, Abe set an example and high bar for all of us to follow. He is already greatly missed by those of us who loved him and knew him. We are comforted with the memories of Abe’s dedication and selflessness to his family, the Blue Skies West organization (formerly Air Force Village II), the Air Force, the San Antonio community, and the country he loved and faithfully served. Our thanks to those of you who attended the Oct 4 Memorial Service and Reception. The Dreiseszun Family appreciates your support and prayers as well as the many memorial contributions made in Abe’s honor to charities of your choice or the Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation where he was a Board Member for 40 years and Chairman and Founder of the Hospital’s Endowment Fund.

CALLING ALL BILLIARD PLAYERS By Mike Slominski Do you yearn for the smoke filled halls with stench of stale beer and overflowing spittoons? Do you dream of those misspent days of your youth? Yearn no more; the Blue Skies Billiard Association is looking for more members. We are an equal opportunity, gender neutral, equal pay organization. The only skill you need to possess is the ability to know the difference between the pointy end of the cue and the butt end of it. We play every Tuesday and Saturday at 2pm in the room just beyond the barbershop and Lori’s Office. You can stop by and check us out, or if you fear your neighbors might get wind of your interests, you can surreptitiously contact any of the following for more info. Mike Slominski, Bill Brennan, John Rehm, Bill Ball or Tom Carter. And for those of you former members who have fallen by the wayside, we forgive your transgressions if you forgive ours. Look at it this way, if you join us you won’t have to go shopping with your spouse, or the commissary or activities you so enjoy. But be advised, your spouse might want to join us too.

NOTES FROM THE DRAC By Bill ball, DRAC Secretary We hope you enjoy the new Bon Appetit menus you’ll see starting this month. The Menu Committee has been working closely with Dining Services to create a new cycle menu that brings more variety and flavors to our dining. Here are some of the guidelines we used to determine what the new Bon Appetit should offer: o No entree (except for turkey) will repeat during the entire cycle if it uses the same preparation; i.e., a protein (beef, pork, chicken, fish) entree that appears more than once in the four- week cycle will be prepared in a different way, with a different flavor profile o Flavors from ethnic backgrounds (Italian, Chinese, French, Indian, Latino, Middle Eastern, etc.) will be featured when possible, perhaps by scheduling one International-theme night per month o If there is an ethnic food on the day's menu, there needs to be a "comfort," "American" selection also available for those who might not like that ethnic selection o Vegetable sides should complement the main dish o Soups should be scheduled so two cream soups are not scheduled on the same day So, we encourage you to try the new dishes and casseroles offered during November! Hope you like them!

THE RED FIDDLER PERFORMANCE By Ginny Hallager Many thanks to all who supported the special concert on Friday, Oct 25, with Wheaton, “The Red Fiddler.” You witnessed the extraordinary talent of a young musician whose future is secure in the music world. You won’t see his unique twist that melds electronics and classical violin, now a “fiddle,” anywhere else. You definitely will see him back at Blue Skies. Thank you for your comments and ideas for future performances. It’s all about networking; and you are the best at that. Thank you from a proud (great) Aunt and (great) Uncle.

RESIDENTS’ CONCERT SERIES By Ginny Hallager Once again on a crisp October afternoon we were lifted out of our seats by the thrilling performance of Sasha Moutouszkine on piano. Our “adopted” son continues to mature and bring a passion to his performance that leaves us breathless, as I am sure he is as well, with the power he uses to bring to life the various selections. He completely changed his program at the last minute due to his wife Chloe’s unplanned absence. There were many recognizable themes from our years of listening to classical music. The most spectacular part of the program was “Pictures at an Exhibition” by Mussorgsky. Sasha explained what each of the 12 pictures was, and then had each section introduced as it began, so we could follow along. We were on our feet as we called him back time and again to thank him for sharing his incredible talent. Kudos, to the Concert Committee for their efforts in bringing us such outstanding performers. Our final concert of 2019 will be on Sunday, Dec 1, at 3pm. Illumen, a men’s chorus, will be returning to us to start the Holiday Season. THRIFT SHOP NEWS By The Thrift Shop Team We've stayed open all year so… we will be closed for the month of November as we will be on vacation. FOLLIES ALERT By Marcia Tinsley Dress Rehearsal - There will be a dress rehearsal, in costume, on Friday, Nov 1, at 2pm. Please be there at 1:30pm so we can begin promptly at 2pm. Follies 2019 Oscar Night – Please be sure and sign up for one of the performances, Sunday, Nov 3 or Sunday, Nov 10.

VETERANS DAY CEREMONY By Jim Conner We will observe Veterans Day on Monday, Nov 11, here at Blue Skies West, beginning at 11am in the front parking lot, or in the Main Lobby in case of bad weather. Mike Farino will be the emcee for the ceremony, and the Village Voices will sing two songs. The Air Force National Champion Junior ROTC Drill Team from John Jay High School will also be joining us. They are amazing! The names of those who have passed in the last year will be read. We will also honor Maj Gen (USAF Ret.) Abe Dreiseszun, a WWII navigator in the first daylight bombing raid in Germany, and a key leader in developing AF Village – now Blue Skies. Since Abe was the Chairman of the Board that started the Air Force Village Foundation, he requested that instead of a plaque, donations in his honor be given to one of the causes in what is now the Charitable Foundation. We had hoped to honor Abe in person, but since he passed away last month his oldest daughter Trudy will be here to accept the letter with the list of donors from our CEO Darrell Jones. Following our ceremony and the cadets’ performance, we will host them for lunch. I need volunteers to buy lunch for the cadets and share the meal with them. If you are interested, please give your name to Jim Conner. Please wear your uniform or any part you have that will identify your service connection.

‘STORM AREA 51 EVENT” By Bill Overacker The social media postings eliciting support to storm “Area 51” on Sep 20-22 evoked two million positive responses. “Area 51” is the mysterious USAF Facility located in the Nevada desert, which supposedly harbors extraterrestrial life forms. This desolate, remote area with virtually no infrastructure was concerned a horde of visitors in search of aliens would arrive ill prepared to cope with the desert environment. The local county (Lincoln) officials notified ARES (Amateur Radio Emergency Services) of their needed communication support. ARES responded with six staffed teams located along the Extraterrestial Highway (Nevada 375) leading to “Area 51.” Fortunately, only three to four thousand visitors appeared, including some from Australia. An “Alien-stock” music festival occurred in the local town of Rachel. There were only a couple of arrests, and no serious incidents or medical emergencies. When a request for assistance occurs, Amateur Radio Operators readily respond to the need, whether large or small. All are invited to the next BST Amateur Radio Club meeting on Thursday, Nov 21, at 11:30am in Room CC1. Please contact Joel Lichtenstein for more information. 73— (Best regards in Ham language).

Bocce is a very simple game played in many countries, especially Europe, so try it and you will be amazed at the fun and relaxation it provides. It definitely lowers my blood pressure!!!

WRIGHT PAT MAH JONGG By Martha Wesson It had been fairly calm and normal in CC3 on Tuesday afternoons lately. Until, that is, Nan won the Hand of the Day with one of our more difficult hands to achieve. It’s called “Independence” - 1776 in mixed suits and a pair of four’s. Another day, Nan (who was sitting as West), had an almost Hand from Heaven which she won by drawing the tile she needed to Mah Jongg on her very first turn. That was fun! Then, this week Mary and Evelyn entertained us by trading seven wins at the same table with “Razzle” and “Dazzle” all afternoon. At one point, Pat #3 threw in her own “Razzle” in an attempt to break up the pattern, but it didn’t work. Mah Jongg is a nice social game to play because you don’t need a partner, you don’t have to sign up or even show up every week yet you always have a good time when you are there. Come give it a try!

BST WEST BILLIARD ASSOCIATION NEWS By Mike Slominski The usual suspects: Big Dog: Bill Ball Big John: John Rehm Ding Dong: Ray Bell T-Man: Tom Carter Wild Bill: Bill Brennan 9-Ball, Tuesday, Oct 1: No scores

8-Ball, Saturday, Oct 5: Four players. 10-Ball was the game, no scoring. 9-Ball, Tuesday, Oct 8: The usual four suspects showed up. In game one, Wild Bill defeated T-Man. In game two, Ding Dong fell to the skills of Big John. After flip- flopping back and forth, the finals saw Big John win over T-Man. 8-Ball, Saturday, Oct 12: Game one saw Ski fall to Big Dog. Game two saw Wild Bill send Big John to the lower level. After leaving numerous balls teetering on the cusp of pockets, a certain player being repeatedly boxed in with no shot possible and the stupid 8-ball going into the wrong pocket, the afternoon saw Wild Bill eventually send the Big Dog home without a treat. Well done, Wild Bill. 9-Ball, Tuesday, Oct 15: No scores. 8-Ball, Saturday, Oct 19: Five showed today; hope we get some newcomers soon. For starters, Ski took out Big John in game one, Wild Bill defeated Ding Dong in two, and Ski lost to Big Dog in three. In the lower level, Big John sent Ding Dong home. Wild Bill fell to Big Dog in game five while Ski survived in game six to send Big John home. In game seven, Ski looked great until he not only pocketed the 8-ball in the wrong pocket but also followed it in with the cue ball. Not good. That win sent Wild

Bill into the finals against Big Dog who bit him leaving five balls on the table and winning this week’s billiards follies. A big bow-wow to Big Dog. 9-Ball, Tuesday, Oct 22: 9-Ball, a game of pure luck, tempting combos, bad positions and unintended consequences. All the usual suspects were present. In the early games, T-Man prevailed to make it into the semi-finals. Wild Bill sent Dig Dong to the lower level in game four. The Big Dog bit Ski in five sending him home while beginning his rampage through the rest of his opponents all the way to and through the finals. Big John fell in eight, Wild Bill in nine, T-Man in ten and T-Man twice in eleven. The time has come for someone to bell the cat or in this case the Big Dog. Nonetheless Big Dog, well played.
