DeBARTOLO, JR. Sunday afternoon. The special presentation takes place at halftime of the San Francisco 49ers Week 11 matchup against the New England Patriots at Levi’s Stadium. The Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence is one of three iconic symbols that represent the elite status of being a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. DeBartolo, Jr. received his Hall of Fame Gold Jacket on Thursday night of Enshrinement Week in Canton, and unveiled his Bronzed Bust during the Enshrinement Ceremony two days later. All three symbols – the Gold Jacket, the Bronzed Bust, and the Ring of Excellence – will be displayed during the Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence presentation. DeBartolo, Jr. will wear his Hall of Fame Gold Jacket and his Bronzed Bust has been temporarily removed from the Hall of Fame and made its way to Santa Clara for the 49ers Alumni Weekend and the Ring of Excellence ceremony. His Bronzed Bust has been on display at the 49ers Museum since Monday, Nov. 14 in honor of the weekend’s festivities. A Youngstown, Ohio native, DeBartolo, Jr. was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame because of his contributions to the game as the longtime owner of the 49ers from 1977 to 2000. Known as the “player’s owner,” DeBartolo, Jr. created a first-class atmosphere and infused the roster with talent that resulted in San Francisco enjoying a remarkable string of winning seasons. During DeBartolo, Jr.’s tenure with the 49ers, the team made 16 playoff appearances, won 13 division titles, played in 10 championship games, and COMMITMENT • INTEGRITY • COURAGE • RESPECT • EXCELLENCE became the first franchise ever to win five Super Bowls – XVI, XIX, XXIII, XXIV, and XXIX. The 49ers posted the best winning percentage in the NFL in both the decades of the 1980s and 1990s. DeBartolo, Jr. is the 15th longtime member of the 49ers franchise to earn election to the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Other 49ers who preceded him to Canton include: FRED DEAN, CHARLES HALEY, JIMMY JOHNSON, RONNIE LOTT, HUGH McELHENNY, JOE MONTANA, LEO NOMELLINI, JOE PERRY, JERRY RICE, BOB ST. CLAIR, Y.A. TITTLE, BILL WALSH, DAVE WILCOX and STEVE YOUNG. DeBartolo, Jr. is also one of 22 contributors to earn a Bronzed Bust in Canton. In addition to being enshrined into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2016, DeBartolo, Jr. was previously inducted into the Bay Area Sports Hall of Fame in 2008 and the San Francisco 49ers Wall of Fame in 2009. Aside from his role with the team, DeBartolo, Jr. is highly respected inside NFL circles and served on the league’s realignment and expansion committees. To DeBartolo, Jr. football is much more than just a game. It is a way of life and that was made most evident through his actions as the owner of the 49ers. During his Enshrinement speech in Canton, DeBartolo, Jr. made a profound statement about how this Game goes beyond the field. “Make no mistake, history has its eyes on all of us right now.     THE COFFIN CORNER: Vol. 22, No. 4 (2000) RONNIE LOTT Pro Football Hall of Fame Class of 2000 By Joe Horrigan If you were to choose one word to describe defensive back Ronnie Lott, it would have to be “passionate.” One of the hardest hitting players ever to take the field, Lott played every down with a fearless winner- take-all attitude. A throwback to another era, he often spoke of his admiration for past bone-jarring greats like Dick Butkus, Ray Nitschke, and Sam Huff, and his desire to achieve their level of play. A consensus All-America choice at the University of Southern California, Lott was the Trojans’ 1980 Most Valuable Player. He led the Pac 10 with eight interceptions his senior season and registered 250 tackles during his four-year collegiate career. As a result, the San Francisco 49ers made him their No. 1 choice – the eighth pick overall – in the 1981 National Football League draft. Lott, as advertised, was the complete package. He had speed, strength, and knowledge of the game that set him apart from most other defensive backs. And, as hoped, the 6-0, 203-pound defensive back went on to become a defensive mainstay on a 49ers’ team that dominated the National Football League in the 1980s. His 14 years of near-unparalleled play not only earned him the right to be compared to the likes of Butkus, Nitschke, and Huff, it also accorded him the privilege of joining them as a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame. During his remarkable career with the 49ers (1981-1990), the Los Angeles Raiders (1991-1992), and the New York Jets (1993-1994), Lott earned 10 Pro Bowl invitations at three different positions – cornerback, strong safety, and free safety.

For example, right now you’ll find that the 1998 Senior Candidate for induction has been announced. In case you missed it, Tommy McDonald is this year’s veteran candidate and the announcement gives enough info on Tommy’s career that you’ll be able to see why he was nominated.     Rocklin and the Magical Seventeen Gary Day Was there something special about their years training in Rocklin that brought the San Francisco 49ers from obscurity to greatness, and then back to obscurity when they left? Is there something special about Rocklin? The Niners trained at Sierra College here during the summers of 1981 through 1997. They won 73% of their games during that seventeen year period including sixteen National Football League playoff games and five Super Bowls. While training in Rocklin they had a winning record every year except the 1982 cancelled season. The Niners entered the NFL in 1950. In the 31 years before training in Rocklin they were a frequent disappointment, winning only 182 of 405 games. During their four best years of that period they played for the NFL championship but lost every year on their way to the title. The Dallas Cowboys beat them in championship games three straight years, in 1970 through 1972.
