Ohio State’s Chase Young Takes Home Bednarik Award Add one more trophy to the pile for Chase Young. The Ohio State junior defensive end won yet another award, with this one being the Chuck Bednarik Award at the ESPN College Football Awards Thursday. Young is the first Ohio State player to ever win the award — which goes to the best defensive player in college football — and he beat out Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown and Clemson linebacker Isaiah Simmons for the honor. Even with missing a pair of games due to suspension, Young’s 16 1/2 sacks are 2 1/2 more than any player in college football, and his 21 tackles for loss ranks tied for No. 4. Young has now won Big Ten Defensive Lineman of the Year, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, the Chicago Tribune Silver Football Award, the Ted Hendricks Award, the Nagurski Trophy and now the Bednarik Award this season, and is nominated for the Heisman trophy alongside LSU quarterback Joe Burrow, Oklahoma quarterback Jalen Hurts and his teammate, Ohio State quarterback Justin Fields. Though he won the Bednarik, Young did lose the largest prize for the evening, the Maxwell award — which is handed to the best player on either side of the ball in college football — to Burrow. The 12 finalists at tight end include eight Pro Football Hall of Famers and combine for 711 career receiving touchdowns. July 13, 2017 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Contact: Steve Richardson [email protected] 214-870-6516 2017 BRONKO NAGURSKI TROPHY WATCH LIST UNVEILED DALLAS (FWAA) — The 2017 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List boasts 103 defensive standouts from all 10 Division I FBS conferences, including four returning players from last season’s Football Writers Association of America All-America team. Christian Wilkins, a defensive tackle for defending national champion Clemson, and Florida State defensive back Tavarus McFadden are the only 2016 FWAA first-teamers on the list. Two other 2016 second-teamers – Houston defensive tackle Ed Oliver and Virginia linebacker Micah Kiser – are included along with NIU defensive back Shawun Lurry, a 2015 First-Team FWAA All-America player. The Atlantic Coast Conference led all conferences with 20 players on the watch list, followed by the Big Ten (16), SEC (14), Pac-12 (13), Big 12 (11), American Athletic (10), Sun Belt (6), Mountain West (5), Independents (3), Mid-American (3) and Conference USA (2). The list includes 30 defensive backs, 29 linebackers, 25 defensive ends and 19 defensive tackles, all vying for the award representing college football’s best defensive player. PRO FOOTBALL HALL OF FAME TEACHER ACTIVITY GUIDE 2019-2020 EDITIOn PHILADELPHIA EAGLES Team History The Eagles have been a Philadelphia institution since their beginning in 1933 when a syndicate headed by the late Bert Bell and Lud Wray purchased the former Frankford Yellowjackets franchise for $2,500. In 1941, a unique swap took place between Philadelphia and Pittsburgh that saw the clubs trade home cities with Alexis Thompson becoming the Eagles owner. In 1943, the Philadelphia and Pittsburgh franchises combined for one season due to the manpower shortage created by World War II. The team was called both Phil-Pitt and the Steagles. Greasy Neale of the Eagles and Walt Kiesling of the Steelers were co-coaches and the team finished 5-4-1. Counting the 1943 season, Neale coached the Eagles for 10 seasons and he led them to their first significant successes in the NFL. Paced by such future Pro Football Hall of Fame members as running back Steve Van Buren, center-linebacker Alex Wojciechowicz, end Pete Pihos and beginning in 1949, center-linebacker Chuck Bednarik, the Eagles dominated the league for six seasons. They finished second in the NFL Eastern division in 1944, 1945 and 1946, won the division title in 1947 and then scored successive shutout victories in the 1948 and 1949 championship games. A rash of injuries ended Philadelphia’s era of domination and, by 1958, the Eagles had fallen to last place in their division. That year, however, saw the start of a rebuilding program by a new coach, Buck Shaw, and the addition of quarterback Norm Van Brocklin in a trade with the Los Angeles Rams.
