  • THE PINNING STONES Culture and Community in Aberdeenshire
THE PINNING STONES Culture and community in Aberdeenshire When traditional rubble stone masonry walls were originally constructed it was common practice to use a variety of small stones, called pinnings, to make the larger stones secure in the wall. This gave rubble walls distinctively varied appearances across the country depend- ing upon what local practices and materials were used. The settlement is characterised by the woodland setting of Balmedie House and the long sand beaches of Balmedie Country Park. Balmedie is a key settlement in both the Energetica area and the Aberdeen to Peterhead strategic growth area (SGA). As such, Balmedie will play an important role in delivering strategic housing and employment allowances. In line with the vision of Energetica, it is expected that new development in Balmedie will contribute to transforming the area into a high quality lifestyle, leisure and global business location. Balmedie is expected to become an increasingly attractive location for development as the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route reaches completion and decreases commuting times to Aberdeen. It is important that the individual character of the village is retained in the face of increased demand. The village currently has a range of services and facilities, which should be sustained during the period of this plan. In addition, the plan will seek to improve community facilities, including new health care provision.

THE MONQUHITTER MESSENGER Fyvie Rothienorman and Monquhitter Community Council May Edition 2021 Contact [email protected] with news, stories & views Thoughts from Monquhitter Primary School As the school year draws to an end, everyone's already excited about moving on to a new adventure in a new class after summer. Primary 7 Nursery Our upcoming P1’s are feeling very happy and excited about moving up. When asked, they said that they are most looking forward to:- 1. meeting Mrs. Walker (the P1 teacher) 2. eating lunch in the canteen 3. playing in the p1 area 4. having buddies! Our current P1s wanted to offer you all some advice for the move. We’re feeling a rollercoaster of emotions from nervous to really excited. Having lots of different teachers throughout the day will be a new experience but a good one. We're also looking forward to meeting new friends, leaving school for lunch, home economics and lots more! Primary 7 has been an amazing year even though we were in lockdown we still had plenty time to do lots of stuff like..........our activities week when instead of going to Loch Insh, we were writing our own ghost stories and making them into books, also being house captains and buddies to our current primary 1’s and so much more! Finally, we just want to say good luck to all children moving The biggest things to remember are:- to make lots of up to a new class after summer and remember – friends, be nice to everyone, listen well and have fun! do your very best, to be your very best! What have these P1’s loved most? They say:- learning to read and write, helping teachers do jobs, Ella, Kelsey and Louise (P7 Monquhitter School) playing with and making new friends, and lots more! I have been part of the Monquhitter Community for over 20 years now.

  • SOURCES 1 the Inland Revenue Survey of Land Value and Land Ownership, 1910-1915 Douglas G Lockhart
USEFUL LOCAL HISTORY SOURCES 1 The Inland Revenue Survey of Land Value and Land Ownership, 1910-1915 Douglas G Lockhart Introduction A survey of all land in Scotland took place between 1910 and 1915 the purpose being to provide a base line to assess future increases in the value of land. An increase in value would be subject to taxation under the provisions of the Finance Act of 1910. The surveyors who visited properties throughout Scotland gathered information on the extent of properties, land use and their current value. The Finance Act was very unpopular and was subsequently repealed. However the records of the surveyors survive and these provide a remarkably detailed snapshot of landownership at this time, so much so that the survey is sometimes referred to as ‘the new Domesday’. The Inland Revenue Survey is a surprisingly neglected source when compared with Valuation Rolls (VRs), the Register of Sasines, Censuses and records of births, deaths and marriages. Two kinds of records exist: the field books compiled by the surveyors; and annotated Ordnance Survey (OS) maps which are effectively a geographical index to properties in each locality. The field books are arranged by county with each parish having a separate set of books. Properties are numbered consecutively within each book which contains sufficient pages for 100 pro forma entries (numbers 1-100). The next book contains numbers 101-200 and so on. Each property with its unique number can be located on the relevant OS map. The books and maps are held by the National Records of Scotland where the original books can be consulted, while the maps can be viewed as virtual volumes on the computer screens in the Historical Search Room.

Over recent years the Diocese, especially through its charges and people, has made progress in working in partnership with others, in its development of being church for the North East and in its approach to specialist and newer forms of both mission and ministry. We believe that this provides a springboard for real developments for Christianity in the North East under the leadership of a new Bishop.
