Harry Psomiades’ Passions: Family, School, Hellenism

When Dr. Harry Psomiades departed this world he left behind not just loved ones but a legacy. As the founder of the Center for Byzantine and Modern Greek Studies at Queens College he created “beacons of Hellenism” through the 15,000 students who have partaken of the offerings of the Center which he founded in 1974. In the photo above, left, he stands 3rd from right with Evan - gelos Venizelos, (2nd from right) who is now the finance minister of Greece, and some of the many officials who came to see the fruits of his labors first hand. His wife Maria (left photo) will present his recently completed book on the Asia Minor disaster ”Nansen and the Greek Refugee Question, 1922-1924” this fall when it will be released by Pella Publishing. He was proud of his Pontian roots. At his funeral, Bishop Savas of Troas said Psomiades dedicated “his work to Pontian Hellenism and to the Greeks of Asia Minor in general. He strived throughout his life towards the recognition of the Pontian genocide by the United States.” The champion of Hellenism was also a devoted father and pappou.
