Third-year head coach Rich Hill has posted back to-back winning seasons at the University of San Diego, and he is coming off a 2000 campaign that saw the Toreros win 34 games. Thirty-one of those wins came against Division I competition, mark in g a new USO baseball record for wins in a sea son against Division I opponents. The 34 wins also was just two victories shy of matching USD's school mark set in 1993. A big key to last year's success was the leadership the team received from its nine seniors, most notably All-WCC performer Kevin Reese, who left the program as the school's all-time career leader in hits (279), runs scored ( 183) and RBI ( 185). USO also lost its entire start ing pitching rotation. For the 200 I squad to continue this Torero success, coach Hill will need hi s players, both key returners and some talented newcomers, to step up and provide the same type of leadership. Although this year's team returns just three seniors and seven upperclassmen from a year ago, the cupboards were not left bare. Junior Greg Sain, who has played both third base and hi s first two seasons, will return behind the plate for hi s junior campagin. Last season Sain earned First Team All -West Coast Conference honors after batting .286 with 44 runs, 40 RBI , a team-best 16 doubles, and 6 homers. With Sain behind the plate, and the return of senior shortstop Josh Harris and sophomore second baseman Mike McCoy in the infield, and speedy sophomoreTony Perez in center, the Toreros strength wi ll be up the middle. "Our defense up the middle should be the staple of this team," said coach Rich Hill. Harris was solid at shortstop defensively, and surpri sed the coaching staff at the plate, batting .288 with 47 runs scored, 38 RBI and 12 doubles. McCoy, out of nearby Grossmont High School, was the team's lead-off hitter and responded by batting .279 with a team-best 64 runs scored, 50 walks and 19 stolen bases in 2 1 attempt s. " Harri s and McCoy fo rm the best -play combination in the conference," added Hill. The Torero offense will also be bol stered by the return of junior Joe Lima, who moves from the outfield to thi rd base. Lima returns as the top batting leader after batting .3 12 a year ago with 34 runs, 50 RBI , 13 doubles, 5 triples a nd 8 homers. Junior S.C. Assael will also play a key role in US D's success as Sain's back-up at catcher, and as an offensive threat. Sophomore David Bagley, who was slowed by inju ries hi s freshman year, returns to compete for play ing time at third base. He batted .248 in 3 1 starts with 17 RBI , 17 runs, 5 doubles and 2 homers. Joining Tony Perez in the outfield will be sophomore newcomer Tom Caple (San Diego, CA) : t'.)~ . <~21~ in right field , with senior David Lembo and junior Chris Sandor (Scottsdale CC) competin g for the open spot in left field. Freshman Adam Bellows ·-i·-- ' (Lake Oswego, OR) will also push for playing time. V " I think we' ll put up comparable offensive numbers to last year," said Hill. "We ' re a little more speed-ori ented than we' ve ever been." A couple of newcomers wi ll be compet ing for first base and designated hitter roles -- 6-5 freshman Lucas Wennersten (Phoenix, AZ) and junior transfer Jason Marian, an Orange County I 2C!JC!J1J Torero Baseball 3 I 2001 Torero Baseball Preview

product who finds hi s way to San Di ego via the Uni versi ty o f New Orleans. Versati le sophomore Mike Oseguera also has experience at first, but will mostly see action in middle relief. Rounding out the crew of infie lders are returners Tobias Herrera (Sprin g Val ley, CA) and Joey Prast (Poway HS), along with newcomers Jesse Jones (San Diego, CA) and Eric Verdugo (Phoe ni x, AZ), and catcher Luis Diaz Miron (Mexico City, Mexico). With the loss of six that accounted for 5 1 starts and 2 1 win s, pitching is a q uestion mark head ing into the new season. A trio of sophomore re turners wil l play key roles with the pitchng corp - LHP Ricky Barrett, RHP Patrick Lucy and RHP Aaron Wilson. Barrett (3-6 record; 25 appear ances). who saw most of hi s work coming out of the bullpen, and Wilson (2-1 in seven appearances) wi ll compete for starting s lots. whil e Lucy (5-2 record: 27 appearances) will again be one of the team's c losers. "We have talented people in th e pitching area, but no one is a proven Division I starter," said coach Hill . " There is a tremendous amount of parity within our staff from 1-1 2. I'm anxious to see who grabs th e s tarting s pots and holds onto them." Newcomers ex pected to push fo r a s tarting nod in the pitching rotation inc lude transfers Chris Martinez, a 5- 11 junior RHP from Dixie State Coll ege, and Tom Caple, a 6 -0 sophomore RHP from San Diego who pl ayed hi s freshman year at Texas. Caple, a former San Diego Player of the Year. wi ll also see playi ng time in the o utfield . Competing for a c losing role wi ll be fresh man Ke vin Clausen. a hard-throwing righthander fro m Lake Oswego, Oregon. Middle reli ef w ill be provided by a quartet o f returners -- senior LHP Bryan Bealer. junior RHP David Dunn. and sophomore LHP's Mike Oseguera and Tony Perez. Newcomers Matt Coy (Mater D ei HS). Tim Dean (Santa Margarita Catho li c HS), Brett Gillespie (West Linn HS) and Greg Simonetti (Thousand Oaks HS) rou nd out the pitching staff. Once again the Toreros will play a tough nonconference schedule. On the road the Toreros will play at Cal Poly, UC Riverside. CS Northridge, USC, San Diego State and Long Beach State. Nonconference home dates will inc lude games with UC Riverside. Sacramento State, CS Northridge. Eastern Michigan. UC San Di ego, Purdue. Long Beach State, UCLA, San Diego State and USC. At US O, Iann acone directs an Athletic Department that includes sixteen NCAA Division I intercoll egiate varsit y teams, eight men's and e ight women's, plus intramurals and recreation. In the last twe lve years behind hi s direction and leadership, Torero Athletics has enjoyed successes both on and off th e playing fi eld. Hi s accomplishments at US O inc lu de an intern al reorgani zation of th e athl etic department, plus improve ments in the major areas of personnel, scholarship assistance, facilities, promotions and marketing, fund raising, drug educati on, academic support, and a uni versit y approved plan for scholarship support and sports sponsorship. In addition, he was in strumental in USO gaining membership to th e Pioneer Football League, which began play in 1993. He has served on th e I-AA Athletic Directors Association Executive Committee; and is past Chairman of the West Coast Con ference Athletics Directors Committee. During Iannacone's tenure, facilities at the USO Sports Center, along with all ath letic fields, have seen vast improvements. Improvements a t the Sports Center include complete renovations of both the north and south wings that added offices for administrators and coaches; additional locker rooms for women's basketball , volleyball and women's soccer; an athletic department conference room; and an academic support room. Torero Stadium, where football , men's and women's soccer compete, was widened to accommodate soccer, and added a state-of-the-art lighting system and scoreboard. The Softball Complex has benefitted with new dugouts, scoreboard, batting cages and additional seating. Addi tionally, The Canyon Field rece ived lighting and a complete renovation for intercollegiate practices and intramural use. This fall the Jenny Craig Pavilion, a new 5, I 00 seat multi-purpose facility, will open and be home for USO basketball and volleyball, and benefit the entire university community. On the playing fi elds, USO has sent twenty-eight teams to NCAA Tournaments s ince Iannacone's arrival in the Fall of 1988. Additionally, the school has captured ten conference championships; twenty-seven NCAA All-Americans; e ighteen CoSIDA/GTE Aca demic All-Americans; twenty-five conference Coaches of the Year; nineteen conference Players of the Year; and four West Coast Conference Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Besides having th e 1999 NCAA National Champion in women's tennis (Zuzana Lesenarova), the Torero athletic program came out on top of the WCC schools in terms of overall strength in 1999 (based on an unofficial scoring system produced by USO each season. For th e first time, the 1998-99 combined men's and women's athletics programs at USO ranked first in th e s tandings. Since 1988 the universi ty has been th e host site for NCAA Tournament events for women's volleyball, men's and women's soccer, and women's tenni s. Prior to USO, Iannacone built an impressive li st of credentials at St. Francis College as Director of Athletics between 1 984-87. Hi s major contribu tions included th e expansion of sports offerings and scholarships for both men and women, improved budgets, renovation of athl etic facilities, the hiring of ad ditional staff, and the establishment of a master plan for the future and continual development of athl eti cs. H e served on several committees, most notably the Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference ( ECAC) Infractions committee and the Northeast Conference committee on conference development. He served as assistant Directo r of Athletics at Fordham Uni versity be tween 1977-84. Along with hi s administrati ve duties, he was assistant football coach for the Rams. Between 1975-78, he acted as offensive coordinator and backfield coach as Fordham captured 19 victori es in their fin al 24 games during thi s s pan. The West Coast Conference was formed in 1952 to provide a convenient venue for five San Francisco Bay Area schools to compete in basketball. Since that modest beginning, the Conference has evolved and grown to become a nationally recognized and competitive force in intercollegiate athletics, w ith 13 league-sponsored sports: baseball; both men's and women's basketball, cross co untry, golf, soccer, and tennis; and women 's vo lleybal l and crew.

The eight wee members span the w estern co ast of the United States, from the pine forests of Eastern Washington, to the Columbia River Bas in, to the dynamic San Francisco Bay Area, to the sunny beaches of Southern California. The Conference is chara cterized by the stability of its membership - only two conferences have been together longer - and its unique emphasis on combining excellence in athletics with excellence in academics.

The Conference recognizes championships in each of its sports, has hosted NCAA championship events, and produced 33 NCAA individual or team champions. And, many outstanding wee student -athlet es have gone on to excel in professional sports.

The long and rich history of t he wee demonstrates that success in intercollegiate athletics can be built on t he foundation of values, character, and academics. . n' f the act10 . se part o
