Late October brought us our first tour of Todd Cathcart’s SCP Automotive Shop. Todd is an ardent car restorer who can’t resist a “Busman’s Holiday”. When he isn’t working on customers’ cars, he dives into his personal project cars. More about the SCP tour later in this newsletter. The CC&C gatherings (come sun, rain or snow, 10 AM the First Saturday of each and every month) are a continuing source of conviviality. The “Block Breakfast” is such a great deal that folks are starting to come up to an hour early to quell the tummy growling. This gives us even more time to swap stories and BMW trivia and also to share some detailed tech know-how. Coffee in the parking lot adds to the tire kicking pleasure and the frequent exotic surprises—cars, that is. November’s Annual Christmas Party at the Austrian-Canadian Cultural Centre brought out about 50 old friends and new enthusiasts. It was a great opportunity to recall the year gone by, share plans for 2018 and introduce the newer folk to the camaraderie of our Club. All this and a deliciously moist and tender Turkey dinner with all the fixings! Many thanks to Christa and her cohorts at ACC for hosting us over the decades. January, as I mentioned in my last note, will be a time of rest for our organized events. It will however be a very busy month for the organizers of our future activities. The Club has been investigating the possibility of hosting a Street Survivor School this summer. Street Survivor is a practical car control school for novice drivers, primarily teenagers. The program has been developed by the BMW Car Club of America and run throughout the US for several years. Clubs in Ontario and the Maritimes have been introducing it to Canada and now BMWCSA hopes to bring the School to Alberta. We have obtained access to a Driver Trainer Facility operated by the Calgary Police Service for a June 2018 school. Now the hard work of organizing Instructors and Volunteers and promoting the School commences. Please do not be surprised, and please be generous, if your talents are requested to assist this Volunteer-Non- profit school. Our plans for a Winter Driving School on the ice at Ghost Lake have hit a speed bump. We have been denied access to the lake! Take heart, however, as we are investigating other options for a Winter School. The Solo Club, who have hosted our past Ghost Lake Schools, is looking into a flooded-parking-lot opportunity. In addition, our comrades to the north, the BMW Club of Northern Alberta, are trying to drum up interest in a frozen-lake school southwest of Edmonton. We hope to have at least one ice school opportunity this winter. Please watch the Club’s Web Page and read our email announcements as we firm up plans; notice might be short. As always our Event Coordinators are open to suggestions from you the membership. Our Club succeeds because its Members step forward. Thank you one and all! I wish you joy of driving a BMW.
