43e Festival International du Film de La Rochelle du 26 juin au 5 juillet 2015 LE PUZZLE DES CINÉMAS DU MONDE Une fois de plus nous revient l’impossible tâche de synthétiser une édition multiforme, tant par le nombre de films présentés que par les contextes dans lesquels ils ont été conçus. Nous ne pouvons nous résoudre à en sélectionner beaucoup moins, ce n’est pas faute d’essayer, et de toutes manières, un contexte économique plutôt inquiétant nous y contraint ; mais qu’une ou plusieurs pièces essentielles viennent à manquer au puzzle mental dont nous tentons, à l’année, de joindre les pièces irrégulières, et le Festival nous paraîtrait bancal. Finalement, ce qui rassemble tous ces films, qu’ils soient encore matériels ou virtuels (50/50), c’est nous, sélectionneuses au long cours. Nous souhaitons proposer aux spectateurs un panorama généreux de la chose filmique, cohérent, harmonieux, digne, sincère, quoique, la sincérité… Ambitieux aussi car nous aimons plus que tout les cinéastes qui prennent des risques et notre devise secrète pourrait bien être : mieux vaut un bon film raté qu’un mauvais film réussi. Et enfin, il nous plaît que les films se parlent, se rencontrent, s’éclairent les uns les autres et entrent en résonance dans l’esprit du festivalier. En 2015, nous avons procédé à un rééquilibrage géographique vers l’Asie, absente depuis plusieurs éditions de la programmation. Tout d’abord, avec le grand Hou Hsiao-hsien qui en est un digne représentant puisqu’il a tourné non seulement à Taïwan, son île natale mais aussi au Japon, à Hongkong et en Chine. -

Ruth Harley 37° South address, Melbourne International Film Festival 2013 ‘The Power of Australian Film’ Dr Ruth Harley, CEO Screen Australia Address to 37° South, Melbourne International Film Festival 2013 Thursday 25 July 2013 I am very pleased to be here for the fifth year in a row to address the 37° South market. As many of you know, this will be my last as CEO of Screen Australia as my term ends in November. Now then, is an opportunity to reflect and to look forward. I will take you through some of the things I’ve learned in my time with the agency and some thoughts for the future. There is much to be proud of in Australian screen production over the last five years. We’ve seen the successful introduction of the Producer Offset and concurrent increase in overall film and TV production, up 58% to just under $3 billion according to ABS data released last month. We’ve seen an increase in employment in the sector of 23% to 13,414 people. 1 Ruth Harley 37° South address, Melbourne International Film Festival 2013 We’ve seen an increase of local box office of 64% compared to the previous five year average. And we’ve seen some amazing screen stories. I’d like to share with you now a reel of some of the Screen Australia slate from the past five years, with some familiar faces from our sector describing Australian content matters. Sydney Film Festival Award Winners Announced at Closing Night Gala 19/06/2016
MEDIA RELEASE EMBARGOED UNTIL 08:30PM SUNDAY 19 JUNE 2016 SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL AWARD WINNERS ANNOUNCED AT CLOSING NIGHT GALA The 63rd Sydney Film Festival tonight awarded Aquarius, directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, the prestigious Sydney Film Prize, out of a selection of 12 Official Competition films. The $63,000 cash prize was awarded at the Festival’s Closing Night Gala awards ceremony and event: the Australian premiere screening of Whit Stillman’s Love & Friendship, held at the State Theatre. Sydney filmmaker Dan Jackson was awarded the Documentary Australia Foundation Award for Australian Documentary, a $15,000 cash prize, for In the Shadow of the Hill; with a special mention going to Destination Arnold directed by Sascha Ettinger Epstein. The Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films were announced; awarding Slapper, directed and written by Luci Schroder, The Dendy Live Action Short Award; The Crossing, directed and written by Marieka Walsh, The Yoram Gross Animation Award; and Goran Stolevski, the Rouben Mamoulian Award for Best Director, for You Deserve Everything. The Event Cinema Australian Short Screenplay Award was awarded to Spice Sisters, written and directed by Sheila Jayadev, who received a $5,000 cash prize, with a special mention to Matthew Vesely for My Best Friend Is Stuck On The Ceiling. The new annual Sydney UNESCO City of Film Prize was awarded to Ms Lynette Wallworth, who received $10,000 prize awarded by Screen NSW, presented by Margaret Pomeranz AM. Sydney Film Festival CEO Leigh Small said, “Cinemas were full again this year with an average of 73% capacity across all sessions and more sellouts than ever before. -

Sydney Film Festival Announces 10 Finalists for Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films
MEDIA RELEASE SYDNEY FILM FESTIVAL ANNOUNCES 10 FINALISTS FOR DENDY AWARDS FOR AUSTRALIAN SHORT FILMS The 63rd Sydney Film Festival announces the 10 finalists in the Dendy Awards for Australian Short Films. The Festival’s short-film competition – now in its 47th year – has been sponsored by Dendy Cinemas for 28 of those years. These ground-breaking awards have kick-started the careers of many prominent filmmakers, with past competitors Warwick Thornton, Ariel Kleiman, Cate Shortland, Jane Campion, Phillip Noyce and Ivan Sen among Dendy Awards among the alumni. This year’s 10 finalists will be screened twice, on Saturday 18 June and again on Sunday 19 June, in two sessions. The winners will be announced at the Festival’s Closing Night Gala on Sunday 19 June, at the State Theatre. The 10 finalists compete for three prizes: the Dendy Live Action Short Award, which provides a $5000 cash prize; the Yoram Gross Animation Award, which carries a $5000 cash prize; and the Rouben Mamoulian Award for Best Director, which offers a $5000 cash prize. In addition, each finalist (and all of the Australian shorts in the Festival) qualifies for the Event Cinemas Australian Short Screenplay Award. “The Dendy Shorts Award is such an important opportunity for talented filmmakers to get exposure in the local film industry,” said Dendy Cinemas National Film, Content and Programming Manager, Claire Gandy. “Dendy takes immense pride in providing local talent with such a prestigious platform as Sydney Film Festival to showcase their visions to a diverse and receptive audience.” The competition for Australian Short Films was established by the Festival in 1970. -

The Mystery Motors of the Autosafe “SkyPark”… Huge thanks to a number of you out there who sent me a link to the BBC News article that finally puts the issue I’ve been bleating on about for months (see Filmhouse December and February monthly programme introductions) to bed. Turns out the eight cars that have been trapped in the failed then abandoned automated car park (which is currently being dismantled behind our offices) since it closed in the early 2000s were only ever old bangers brought in to test the automatic parking machinery! Phew! Glad to have gotten to the bottom of that one… Our March programme, as is customary for the time of year, is replete with Oscar® hopefuls, it now being the turn of Lady Bird, Phantom Thread (in 70mm!), A Fantastic Woman, Palme d’Or winner The Square, and The Shape of Water, which continues from February. Awards season is, though, nearly over, as is evidenced by a slew of new films too new to qualify for consideration this year: Lynne Ramsay’s brilliant You Were Never Really Here; Warwick (Samson & Delilah) Thornton’s stunning Aussie ‘western’, Sweet Country, and Wes Anderson’s fabulous Isle of Dogs. And you know what, looking at that list, I’m going to stick my neck out and say that I’m not entirely sure I have ever seen a better line-up of new release cinema, at any one cinema, ever. -

When Aboriginal stockman Sam (Hamilton Morris) kills white station owner Harry March (Ewen Leslie) in self- defence, Sam and his wife Lizzie (Natassia Gorey-Furber) go on the run. They are pursued across the outback, through glorious but harsh desert country. Sergeant Fletcher (Bryan Brown) leads the posse with the help of Aboriginal tracker Archie (Gibson John) and local landowners Fred Smith (Sam Neill) and Mick Kennedy (Thomas M. Wright). Fletcher is desperate to capture Sam and put him on trial for murder – but Sam is an expert bushman and he has little difficulty outlasting them. Eventually, for the health of his pregnant wife, Sam decides to give himself up. -
