Pastoral Assistants are authorised ministers, who have undertaken some training in the diocese and are commissioned for their work in their parishes. They also visit those unable to aend services at one of our churches to give Communion at home. Following significant loss or bereavement, the team is able to give ongoing support. News from our churches

Thinking about our worship (Part 4) Last month we printed the third part of a short series of arcles about the structure, or shape, of the Eucharist or Holy Communion service. This month we conclude the series. First a reminder from the Mission Shaped Church report: ‘Churches are Eucharisc communies, irrespecve of their church tradion, or the frequency of Eucharisc worship. The Eucharist lies at the heart of Chrisan life. It is the act of worship in which the central core of the biblical gospel is retold and re-enacted.’ The service moves through four secons: the Gathering ; the Liturgy of the Word ; the Liturgy of the Sacrament ; and the Dismissal . If the four secons outlined above are the surface structure, then underneath can be discerned a deeper structure of the Eucharist: Gathering, Transformaon and Mission. We come as God’s people, we encounter the living God and we are sent out again to be God’s people and do God’s work.

Main headings Deep structure The Gathering Gathering The Liturgy of the Word ) Transformaon The Liturgy of the Sacrament ) The Dismissal Mission Another way of exploring the four secons is as follows:

This table shows the transforming flow of the service from gathering to deparng. We bring with us from the world our joys and our sadnesses, our hopes and our fears. These experiences are rightly placed before God in our worship. We should then not leave the place of worship as the same people who entered it. Our worship is about Mission . We come in order to be sent out again ‘to live and work to God’s praise and glory’.

Janet Mann Travelling Crib (Posada) – A Project for Advent This year we will again be sending two travelling cribs on a journey around our communies during Advent as a way of helping us prepare for Christmas. . Posada is a Spanish word meaning ‘inn’. Posada celebraons originated in Mexico where two young people were chosen to dress up as Mary and Joseph. They used to travel from house to house in their village telling people about the imminent arrival of Jesus and asking them it they would give him a room. On Christmas Eve they would re-enact a community play and bring figures of Mary and Joseph to be place in the crib. The modern day equivalent is based on this concept, but enables different people to give a home to the navity figures for a night. Our traveling cribs will begin their journeys at the services in St John, Yealand Conyers and St Oswald, Warton on Advent Sunday (1st December). The cribs will then travel around the villages each day staying in different homes and the local schools and inns, with one crib arriving in St John’s at the Crib Service on Christmas Eve and one crib arriving in St Oswald’s on Christmas Day morning as we celebrate the birth of Jesus. Posada has been encouraged in this country by the Church Army and many parishes now enjoy sharing in this special Advent project. We look forward to our travelling cribs helping people celebrate more meaningfully the season of Advent.

St Oswald’s Churchyard—keeping it neat and dy In recent months the St Oswald’s Fabric & Finance Commiee and the Warton PCC have reviewed aspects of the churchyard policy with parcular regard to the placing of flowers and ornaments at the graves. As those who visit the churchyard regularly will be aware, at present there is a great variety of items placed at the graves. This can make it difficult to keep the whole churchyard looking as neat and dy as we might like. It can also create difficules for those who maintain the churchyard, especially those who mow the grass. The Warton PCC therefore agreed at its meeng in September to issue some clear guidelines as to what is permied to be placed at graves, with these new guidelines coming into effect on 1st February 2020. These guidelines complement the Churchyard Regulaons issued by the Diocese of , which states that “PCCs have a duty to see that churchyards are kept generally in such an orderly and decent manner as becomes consecrated ground and that boundaries are defined and maintained”. The PCC agreed that the following will not be permied in the churchyard: i. Chippings, pebbles or similar materials and free-standing vases or pots; ii. Mementoes, windmills, toys or lile animals, solar lamps or similar; iii. Arficial flowers (except Remembrance Day poppies and Christmas wreaths, but these are to be removed aer a period of not more than four weeks). The PCC agreed that wreaths brought to the funeral may be placed at a grave aer the service, but must be removed when the blossoms wither. The purpose of the clearer guidelines is to ensure that the churchyard can connue to be maintained to a high standard and meet the needs of all those who have a family member buried in the churchyard and of all those who visit the churchyard. If you have any quesons about this please contact the Churchwarden, Sue Hopwood, 01524 720160, or the Vicar, Robin Figg, 01524 732946 or robin.fi[email protected] PARISH NEWS | 10 | DECEMBER 2019 JANUARY 2020

Notes from a Warton Garden The me has come for me to write my final column for you. I’ve been wring this since 2012 and am going to bow out and pass it on. I’ll sll be busy in my garden over the winter, ordering seeds, pacing out a new border, looking out for snowdrops to peep through the soil and encouraging the spring bulbs to make an appearance before long.

So it seems appropriate to be handing on at the end of a year. Winter is a me for making new plans, dreaming up new plant combinaons whilst your hands are warm around a cup of tea by the fire. It’s been a busy me recently for our Group...

Our Beavers and Cubs held a joint camp at our local Scout campsite (Silverhelme, just off The Row in Silverdale); they played lots of games, did some “pioneering” and visited the RSPB sanctuary at Leighton Moss to see the birds and go pond dipping; they had a great me and their behaviour was impeccable. Our Beavers have recently been doing their Air Acvies Stage 1 Badge, melng wax crayons onto stones (why not?), learning about exercise, carrying out science experiments and learning about weather and they had a Halloween Night. Cubs have completed their Athletes Badge, had a fencing night, learned Brish Sign Language for their Communicaons Badge and “invested” two new Cubs. They have had a Halloween night too. Beavers and Cubs are off, soon, on a joint climbing session at Salt Ayre. For the past two months the Scouts have been preparing for the “Crew Challenge”, run by our County Campsite Service Crew, teams of three Scouts have to navigate around Beacon Fell near Preston finding as many of the 20 “Bases” run by the Crew as they can in three hours. At each Base they have to complete a “Scoung Skills” task such as first aid, throw a lifeline, navigaon, tracking, survival, useful knots etc or a “Now-Get-Out-Of-That” base requiring teamwork and iniave... we entered 10 teams and they all had a great me with one of our teams geng a “podium finish” with a 3 rd place in the 10-14 year old category, not bad for “first mers” and a field of over 100 teams! Remembrance Sunday saw our Beavers, Cubs, Scouts and Young Leaders aending the Acts of Remembrance at Warton and Yealand. If you have children who might want to join us, or think you might like to help run the Group, please contact us via Howard Greenwood (our Group Scout Leader) on 01524- 734144 or by email at acnide@bnternet.com

O sweet Child of Bethlehem, grant that we may share with all our hearts in this profound mystery of Christmas. Put into the hearts of men and women this peace for which they somemes seek so desperately and which you alone can give to them. Help them to know one another beer, and to live as brothers and sisters, children of the same Father. Reveal to them also your beauty, holiness and purity. Awaken in their hearts love and gratude for your infinite goodness. Join them all together in your love. And give us your heavenly peace. Amen. (Pope John XXIII)
