The Big 12 has risen. Yes, the Super Bowl IMVPs, national championship winners and first round MLB draft selections have been an uplift. But the Conference also takes pride in stretching beyond playing surfaces to impact the communities the Big 12 calls home. Since 2016, the Big 12 has incorporated a legacy project at various schools and parks in the Kansas City community in conjunction with the Big 12 Men’s Basketball Championship. This season, the women’s championship has also moved back to Kansas City. “We appreciate the opportunity to impact the Kansas City community beyond intercollegiate athletics,” said Big 12 Conference Commissioner Bob Bowlsby. “These projects have had a transformational effect by providing enhanced resources to students and educators.” The Conference’s first project was refurbishing the outdoor courts at the Kansas City Urban Youth Academy, while doing a similar project in 2017 at the Kansas City School for the Deaf. The Big 12 concentrated its legacy effort on the Oak Park area in 2018, redoing the outdoor courts at the Pat Clarke Outdoor Arena. The Big 12 helped rebuild a classroom/media area at Noble Prentis Elementary in 2019. In 2019, the Big 12 transitioned to the classroom setting, rebuilding a classroom/media area at Noble Prentis Elementary, a school that had not seen a major undertaking since receiving an air conditioner in 2001, despite being built in 1955. “One of the best ways to impact kids well before they reach college is to help empower their teachers and that is what we are trying to do,” said CFP Foundation Executive Director Britton Banowky. This year’s project featured an entire classroom makeover at the Kansas City Girls Prep Academy, complete with updated technology among other region.
