  • Exclusive Topics for JAPAN AUTUMN INTERNATIONAL 2016 - 2Nd Edition
Exclusive Topics for JAPAN AUTUMN INTERNATIONAL 2016 - 2nd Edition - October 2016 The Japan Racing Association Despite Makahiki’s Arc Failure, JRA’s Inaugural Simulcast is a Success This year’s Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (G1, 2,400m) had special meaning for Japan. Makahiki (JPN, C3, by Deep Impact), the Tokyo Yushun (Japanese Derby, G1, 2,400m) victor, became the first Japanese entry in two years and 20th overall (18 horses) to embark on a quest for this French G1 race, the most coveted title in Europe. His sire, Deep Impact, also owned by Kaneko Makoto Holdings Co., Ltd., entered the race back in 2006 with a career record of 10-1-0 from 11 starts, but he finished third and later was disqualified due to a positive drug test. This year’s Arc was also the first time in which Japanese racing fans were able to bet on a homegrown challenger through JRA’s historic new overseas simulcasting. But despite the big buildup to the Arc, Makahiki disappointed badly by finishing 14th. The race unfolded with an uncharacteristically fast pace early on, wearing out the inexperienced three-year-old as he fought to keep his position near the leaders but stayed wide throughout. Although Japan’s highly regarded colt faded from contention, the 2016 Arc added a Makahiki new page to its history book as the top three finishers—Found in the Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe (IRE, F4), Highland Reel (IRE, C4) and Order Of St George (IRE, C4)—all came from the same yard (Irish trainer Aidan O’Brien) and all shared the same sire (Galileo).

AHe came out of it well,@ Baffert said Sunday morning. AIt takes about a week to determine, so I=m going to come back next weekend and see. But I don=t see anything discouraging right now.@ Baffert continued, ACan he win the Triple Crown? I don=t know. But he=s the Derby winner, and that=s all that matters. I was coming in here, thinking, I wasn=t sure [if Medina Spirit could win the Derby], everything had to go perfect for him. We were going to go to the lead, and see what happened. What if they challenged him? He made the lead pretty easily, for him, and the other speed horse didn=t break [Rock Your World]. That=s what it=s like in the Derby. Exclusive Topics for JAPAN AUTUMN INTERNATIONAL 2019 - 3rd Edition - November 2019 The Japan Racing Association The most prestigious prep race towards the Japan Cup (G1, 2,400m), the Tenno Sho (Autumn) (G1, 2,000m), was held on Oct. 27 at Tokyo Racecourse and won by 2018 Japan Cup victor Almond Eye (JPN, F4, by Lord Kanaloa). The four-year-old Lord Kanaloa filly, who competed against a quality field that included 10 G1 winners, quickly secured a forward position along the rails from an inside draw (No.2) and easily drew away at the stretch to score a three-length victory. Almond Eye’s connections, however, wanting to be sure that the filly has plenty of time to recover, have chosen the Hong Kong Cup (G1, 2,000m) on Dec. 8 as her next target upon returning from Northern Farm Ten-ei in Fukushima Prefecture, where she is on a short break. The filly, who puts her full effort into each race and usually pulls up exhausted, was not present for the photo Almond Eye session at the winners’ ceremony. in the 2019 Tenno Sho (Autumn) In the Tenno Sho (Autumn), Danon Premium (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) was runner-up and Aerolithe (JPN, M5, by Kurofune) was third, but neither will start in the Japan Cup because they are not suited to the 2,400-meter distance. You Can Smile (JPN, C4, by King Kamehameha), Wagnerian (JPN, C4, by Deep Impact) and Makahiki (JPN, H6, by Deep Impact), all trained by Yasuo Tomomichi (Ritto Training Center), finished fourth, fifth and tenth, respectively, and will run in the Japan Cup.
