4 ORIENTATION MAY 2020 MESSAGE FROM THE

PRESIDENT

Ir. Prof. Dr. Ewe Hong Tat President / CEO Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman

It is my pleasure to welcome our new students to UTAR.

As a university by the people, for the people, UTAR has always been a university with a solid foundation, a strong sense of community spirit and a reputation for academic and research excellence. With a scenic lakeside campus in Kampar and a purpose-built campus in Sungai Long, UTAR has a growing regional presence and an expanding international profile with over 400 international partners, more than 100 external examiners and more than 130 industry advisors for our academic programmes.

While you experience university life over the next few years, I hope that the experiences gained will add to your changing perspective of life, enhance your personality, and help you gain valuable life lessons. Do treasure your time in the university and do stay focused to excel in both your studies and your social and communication skills.

With dedicated focus on achieving excellence in teaching and research, UTAR has been making impressive strides in establishing a strong reputation as a university providing affordable quality education. The university has consistently attained awards for its efforts towards educational excellence. UTAR retained its #501-600 ranking for the third time, since 2017, in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2020. In addition to that, UTAR is ranked #181 in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Asia University Rankings 2020. In the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) Graduate Employability Rankings 2020, UTAR is ranked #251-300. The University has also consistently enjoyed a high graduate employability rate of 95% to 97% within six months of graduation.

With such recognition accorded to the University, I hope that the same spirit of achievement and success will be shared by all students to adopt a positive attitude in learning and to strive for accomplishments that will make you better persons. Learning is a pervasive life-long process and working hard to attain your goals is essential for progress. The passion to explore, discover and acquire new knowledge should be the way to remain competitive in the cyber age of the 21st century.

During this period of the Movement Control Order (MCO) because of the COVID-19 pandemic, UTAR has implemented several initiatives for its students. Our Open Day and Orientation Week became online events where all relevant briefings, videos, registration and information are posted online. Classes for the new intake will be held online until the government lifts the MCO and provides further guidelines. UTAR has also allowed installment payments for tuition fees for the new intake students in their first trimester of studies. Students staying near the campus during the MCO are also provided free meals under the MOHE food aid programme.

While the campus remains temporarily closed during the MCO period, classes continue as online teaching and learning and students learn from home. We welcome our new students to be part of our online learning community and to enjoy the benefits of learning at home during this time before the government allows students to return to campus. We will provide the details on returning to campus later and give ample notice for your family and you to prepare before you start campus life later.

Once again, welcome to UTAR and we look forward to your commitment and participation, eventual graduation and subsequent contribution to the community, society and country.

An exciting journey awaits you. Do your best to make it a memorable and successful one.

Best wishes,

6 ORIENTATION MAY 2020 MESSAGE FROM THE STUDENT REPRESENTATIVE COUNCIL (2019/2020)

Dear freshmen of 2019/2020,

Welcome to Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR) - your university, your campus, and your second home for the next few years!

We are the Student Representative Council (SRC), the bridge between you and the management of UTAR, the support system for you in all aspects of your university life: your health and welfare, academics, and safety, amongst others. Reach out to us if you require any assistance or support throughout your time here on campus.

To kick start your UTAR journey, here are a few tips:

Most importantly, study hard and study smart. Attend your classes and pay close attention, exam tips are usually found in class!

Learn more about the people around you. You will find hidden gems whom you will call a friend-of-a-lifetime, and some rocks-of-a-people that you will put aside. Know your worth and the worth of others, it helps when you are assignment mates with good people!

Additionally, get yourself involved in university activities. Explore the wonderful clubs and societies, push yourself out of your comfort zone, and discover what amazing things you can achieve in the right environment!

Lastly, be courageous in the face of adversity. The tertiary education environment is unlike what you have faced previously. Challenges can be tough and taxing, but with resilience, courage, and sprinkles of fun, we assure you that your time spent here will be the most memorable part of your life. Be proud, be confident, and most importantly, be yourself.

We wish you a pleasant UTAR journey, may you grow culturally and learn continuously!

Best Regards,

Student Representative Council 2019/2020 Universiti Tunku Abdul Rahman

(DSSC)

The Department of Soft Skills Competency (DSSC) offers short programmes to equip students with the necessary soft skills and life skills to enhance their competitive edge in the job market and to excel in life. It also coordinates the University's compulsory unit on co-curricular.

With its vision of providing holistic education, the University looks beyond developing students academically by providing them with other skills that enhance their contributions to the workplace and society.

Soft skills are essential skills in the workplace. Students with excellent soft skills can fit into most environments because they are adaptable, committed and persevering, and display the right attitude. Such qualities cut across all disciplines. In order to perform well and advance in one's career, one needs to have high levels of soft skills in dealing with people. In short, technical skills need to be complemented with soft skills.

Soft skills take years to develop. Students are therefore encouraged to start developing their soft skills while pursuing their academic study. DSSC engages experienced trainers and also collaborates with organisation in public and private sectors to conduct the following key areas of soft skills and life skills programmes for students:

i. Communication and Language Skills ii. Cognitive Skills iii. Complex Problem Solving iv. Critical Thinking v. Emotional Intelligence, Cultural Intelligence and Teamwork Skills vi. Moral and Professional Ethics vii. Leadership Skills viii. Lifelong Learning & Information Management ix. Entrepreneurship Skills x. Digital Literacy

DSSC also organises a wide range of activities such as Speakers' Corner, UTAR New Village Community Project, and Overseas Study Tours and Student Exchange Programmes.

With effect from January 2009, UTAR has introduced the UTAR SOFT SKILLS DEVELOPMENT CERTIFICATE (USSDC), a certification system to recognise students' achievements and efforts to improve themselves in the above areas of soft skills and life skills.

They will be penalised for any loss or damage to the book borrowed in their name and will be required to pay the cost of replacement or repair together with any fines incurred before reporting the loss or damage, plus a processing fee.

Patrons are not allowed to borrow other books if they have unpaid fines/replacement cost or have yet to return overdue book(s).

Each patron has his/her own library account that can be accessed at any time at https://library.utar.edu.my/LIBAccount.php. Through this account, the patron can check his/her library activity and perform online renewal of book(s) or online reservation of book(s).

Renewal of Books Library books can be renewed online twice through the UTAR Library OPAC. However, renewal is denied under these circumstances:

♦The item is overdue. ♦The item is being requested by another patron. ♦Exceed the maximum number of renewal for the item. ♦If patron has unpaid fines/unreturned overdue books.

Overdue Notices Library System will automatically send you a reminder email 3 days before a book is due. After the book is overdue, unlimited overdue emails are sent to your email everyday until the book is returned. Failure to read emails will not be regarded as a valid excuse for non-receipt of overdue notices. Patrons are however advised to refer to the due date stamped in the book and not rely on email reminders/overdue notices as they are merely courtesy reminders.

Patrons will not be allowed for conferment of degree and convocation and their degree certificate will be withheld if they have debts with the Library, until such debts are cleared. Patrons who fail to pay their fines will have their borrowing privileges suspended.
