UIL REGION 28 REGION EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE EMAIL MEETING, TUESDAY, OCTOBER 30, 2018 1. Welcome, and Recognition of Region and Area Marching Contest results and Bands Certified to State I would like to welcome all of our committee members, Mr. Ismael Garcia, Rio Hondo ISD superintendent and committee chair, Dr. Arturo Cavazos, Harlingen CISD superintendent, Dr. Gonzalo Salazar, Los Fresnos CISD superintendent, Dr. Daniel Trevino, Mercedes ISD superintendent, Dr. Priscilla Canales, Weslaco ISD superintendent, Dr. Lisa Garcia, Point Isabel ISD superintendent, and Mr. Eduardo Infante, Lyford CISD superintendent, as well as any proxy s/he may have designated. Thank you for serving on this committee. Pigskin Jubilee 2018 was held in two locations on Saturday, October 20, 2018. The 6A Bands performed at the Bobby Lackey Stadium in the Weslaco ISD. Event judges were: Dennis Hopkins, Pittsburg, TX; Tammy Fedynich, Lubbock, TX, and Trevor Braselton, Dickinson High School, Dickinson, Texas. All nine bands participating presented superior performances (in spite of occasional mist and rain and an occasional downpour) and all nine bands received unanimous division I ratings (advancing them all from Region to Area G 6A Marching Contest). Performance order of bands was as follows: Brownsville Rivera Early College High School, Harlingen High School, Donna North High School, Weslaco High School, San Benito High School, Harlingen South High School, Weslaco East High School, Los Fresnos High School and Brownsville Homer Hanna High School. The 2A, 3A, 4A and 5A bands performed at the Mercedes ISD Tiger Stadium, also enduring challenging mist, rain and the occasional downpour. Judges were Mike Olson, New Braunfels, TX; Daniel Solis, San Antonio, TX; and Armando Robledo, Cy-Ridge HS, Houston. Both 2A bands earned Division II (excellent) ratings and according to the 2018-2019 UIL Constitution and Contest Rules, qualified for Area E 2A Marching Contest. In the 3A class, Lyford High School earned a Division I (superior) rating and Santa Rosa High School earned a Division II (excellent) rating. In Class 4A, Progreso High School and Raymondville High School each earned a Division II (excellent) rating; La Feria High School, Rio Hondo High School and Port Isabel High School each earned a Division I (superior) rating and thereby qualified for the Area E 4A Marching Contest. In Class 5A, Edcouch-Elsa High School earned a Division II (excellent) rating; Mercedes High School, Donna High School, Brownsville Lopez Early College High School, Brownsville Veterans Memorial Early College High School, Brownsville James Pace Early College High School and Gladys Porter Early College High School all earned Division I (Superior) ratings. For the 2A Area E Area Marching Contest, held at the Gregory-Portland ISD Stadium on Saturday, October 27, 2018, according to the UIL C&CR, because 11 bands participated, the preliminary results served as the finals which advanced the top three bands to the State Marching Contest; La Villa High School placed ninth and Santa Maria High School placed eleventh and therefore did not advance. For the 29 bands participating at the 4A Area E Area Marching Contest, held at the Calallen ISD Stadium on Saturday, October 27, 2018, all three Region 28 bands advanced to the final 10 bands, Rio Hondo High School placing fifth, Port Isabel High School placing seventh and La Feria High School placing tenth in the preliminaries. Of the 10 bands in the finals at the 4A Area Marching Contest, five advanced to state, and these include Port Isabel High School, placing fourth in the Area Finals, and Rio Hondo High School, placing fifth in the Area Finals. They will be performing in the Preliminaries for the 4A UIL State Marching Contest on Wednesday, November 7, 2018; Port Isabel High School at 8:30 AM and Rio Hondo High School at 10:45 AM; Awards and Drum Major Retreat at 3:30 PM. Finals begin at 6:15 PM with Awards at 9:30 PM on Wednesday night. For the 26 bands participating at the 6A Area G Area Marching Contest, held at the Laredo United ISD Bill Johnson Student Activity Complex on Saturday, October 27, 2018, five of the nine Region 28 bands placed as follows in the preliminaries: Los Fresnos High School, 13th place, Weslaco High School 14th place, Brownsville Rivera High School 16th place, San Benito High School 18th place, and Weslaco East High School 25th place. Four of the nine Region 28 bands advanced to the final 10 bands, Harlingen High School placing 10th, Donna North High School placing 7th, Harlingen South High School placing 4th and Brownsville Hanna High School placing 3rd in the preliminaries. Of the 10 bands in the finals at the 6A Area Marching Contest, five advanced to state; these include Brownsville Hanna High School, placing 3rd in the Area Finals and Harlingen High School, placing 5th in the Area Finals. They will be performing in the Preliminaries for the 6A UIL State Marching Contest on Monday, November 5, 2018; Harlingen HS at 4:45 PM and Hanna HS at 7:30 PM; Awards and Drum Major Retreat at 9:15 PM. Finals begin at 1:45 PM on Tuesday, November 6, 2018 with Full Band Retreat at 5:15 PM and Awards at 5:30 PM. Pigskin Report Intake and Expenses The Pigskin Jubilee 2018 generated entry fees of $2,500.00 in total; this breaks down as $900.00 from the 6A site in Weslaco, and $1,600.00 from the 2A-5A site in Mercedes. Advance ticket sales totaled $ 22,496.00 from the Weslaco site and $ 16,472.00 from the Mercedes site; advance ticket sales garnered a total of $ 38,968.00. Gate sales totaled $ 20,861.00, $ 9,193.00 from the Weslaco site and $ 11,668.00 from the Mercedes site. Judge expenses totaled $ 3,518.33 from the Weslaco site and $ 2,596.48 from the Mercedes site; combined judges’ expenses totaled $ 6,114.81. Contest expenses totaled $ 900.00 from the Weslaco site (reflecting considerable community donations), and $ 1,710.39 from the Mercedes site; there remains one outstanding bill from the ambulance service at the Mercedes site. Additional office expenses so far this year total $ 2,185.97. Balance July 1, 2018: $55,365.02 Balance October 30, 2018: $86,428.41 3. Upcoming Events We are anticipating three High School Solo and Ensemble Events—orchestra strings solo and ensemble on January 26, 2019, choir and piano solo and ensemble on February 2, 2019, and band solo and ensemble, mariachi medium ensemble and guitar solo and ensemble on February 2, 2019. We are planning for seven Concert and Sight-reading Evaluations later in the spring, middle and high school choirs (2), middle and high school orchestras (1), middle school non-varsity and varsity bands (2) , and 6A high school bands (1) and 2A-5A high school bands (1).
