Little research exists on listener’s perception of EVPs to date. The field of speech science involves the study of the production, transmission, and perception of human speech. Many concrete elements from the study of speech science have the potential to be applied to the interpretation of EVP content. Anton Karl Kozlovic Murray Leeder’s exciting new book sits comfortably alongside The Haunted Screen: Ghosts in Literature & Film (Kovacs), Ghost Images: Cinema of the Afterlife (Ruffles), Dark Places: The Haunted House in Film (Curtis), Popular Ghosts: The Haunted Spaces of Everyday Culture (Blanco and Peeren), The Spectralities Reader: Ghost and Haunting in Contemporary Cultural Theory (Blanco and Peeren), The Ghostly and the Ghosted in Literature and Film: Spectral Identities (Kröger and Anderson), and The Spectral Metaphor: Living Ghosts and the Agency of Invisibility (Peeren) amongst others. Within his Introduction Leeder claims that “[g]hosts have been with cinema since its first days” (4), that “cinematic double exposures, [were] the first conventional strategy for displaying ghosts on screen” (5), and that “[c]inema does not need to depict ghosts to be ghostly and haunted” (3). However, despite the above-listed texts and his own reference list (9–10), Leeder somewhat surprisingly goes on to claim that “this volume marks the first collection of essays specifically about cinematic ghosts” (9), and that the “principal focus here is on films featuring ‘non-figurative ghosts’—that is, ghosts supposed, at least diegetically, to be ‘real’— in contrast to ‘figurative ghosts’” (10). In what follows, his collection of fifteen essays is divided across three main parts chronologically examining the phenomenon. Part One of the book is devoted to the ghosts of precinema and silent cinema. In Chapter One, “Phantom Images and Modern Manifestations: Spirit Photography, Magic Theater, Trick Films, and Photography’s Uncanny”, Tom Gunning links “Freud’s uncanny, the hope to use modern technology to overcoming [sic] death or contact the afterlife, and the technologies and practices that led to cinema” (10).

    Document of the Month October 2020 Transcript of a séance, CR1886/Box 469 For October’s document of the month, we have decided to focus on a paranormal theme. We have chosen one of the séance transcripts from the Greville of Warwick Castle collection. These were found by a researcher in the papers relating to Anne Greville, the fourth Countess of Warwick. They had been sealed in an envelope marked “Clarke’s specifications for painting…” and appear to be transcripts of séances which occurred at Warwick Castle during the nineteenth century. The transcript starts with the following: “Leave all to the future research. The power at work is not that of the mortals in the Castle”1. First page of the séance transcript, Warwickshire County Record Office, CR1886/Box 469 There are two transcripts in the envelope, but the one we have chosen to focus on here appears to channel the spirit of a servant called Edward Jamieson, who has been blamed for moving objects and creating noises around the castle: “the spirit of me called Edward Jamie-son is one of those who now haunt the place”2. A search of Ancestry and Find My Past yields no records for anyone with that name [although we did find reference to an Edward Jameson baptised in Coventry]. THE Society for Psychical Research has investigated a great many cases, but as far as I can remember they have not as yet seriously considered instances of spirit-manifestations of living peo- ple. Dante in his Divina Commedia speaks of a man whose soul he met in the Inferno where it was tortured for the many crimes com- mitted on earth. Yet the person to whom the soul belonged was still living, at least to all appearances. Dante informs us that this per- son was animated by a devil who had taken the place of his real soul which had already descended to the place where it belonged. Now if contemporaries of Dante had asked this unfortunate person whether Dante's report was correct or not he would have vigorously declared that he knew nothing of the predicaments of manifestations of his soul in other parts of the universe. Here is a problem, and we have an opportunity to report a case which is similar in kind. A friend of ours. Rev. W. H. Withrow, wrote a book on Egypt some thirty-odd years ago, and an unusual number of copies were by some chance circulated in Melbourne, Australia. The result was he was looked up to in that part of the world as an authority in Egyptian lore. Some people live longer than might be anticipated, and this happened to Mr. Withrow. His readers in Melbourne thought he had long been gathered to his fathers while he was still continuing his labors as an editor in a publishing house in Toronto.

Rhodes1 ABSTRACT Horror film scholarship has generally suggested that the supernatural vampire either did not appear onscreen during the early cinema period, or that it appeared only once, in Georges Méliès’ Le manoir du diable/The Devil’s Castle (1896). By making rigorous use of archival materials, this essay tests those assumptions and determines them to be incorrect, while at the same time acknowledging the ambiguity of vampires and early cinema, both being 1234567890 prone to misreadings and misunderstandings. Between 1895 and 1915, moving pictures underwent major evolutions that transformed their narrative codes of intelligibility. During the same years, the subject of vampirism also experienced great change, with the supernatural characters of folklore largely dislocated by the non-supernatural “vamps” of popular culture. In an effort to reconcile the onscreen ambiguities, this paper adopts a New Film History methodology to examine four early films distributed in America, showing how characters in two of them—Le manoir du diable and La légende du fantôme/Legend of a Ghost (Pathé Frères, 1908) have in different eras been mistakenly read as supernatural vampires, as well as how a third—The Vampire, a little-known chapter of the serial The Exploits of Elaine (Pathé, 1915)— invoked supernatural vampirism, but only as a metaphor. The paper concludes by analyzing Loïe Fuller (Pathé Frères, 1905), the only film of the era that seems to have depicted a supernatural vampire. Revising the early history of vampires onscreen brings renewed focus to the intrinsic similarities between the supernatural creatures and the cinema.

Kinane joked that he thinks "the only people who believe in poltergeists are people who don't have any real-world problems," and following that statement, he states that believing in ghosts and engaging in paranormal culture is stereotypically "white" (0:39-1:20). The parallel drawn between daily life andthe topic of race is referredto as privilege, and Kinane insinuates that white privilege leaves an individual with a significant amount of free time and resources to engage in seemingly illogical beliefs, such as ghosts; however, ghost hunting reality television lends itself to more thanboredom, as it is a new and exciting genre specific to the 21st century. In this thesis, ghost hunting reality television is explored and recognized as a cultural artifact. Born from the combination of secular methodology, religion, and technology, an unlikely and obscure genre explodes from obscurity to popular culture to such a degree that tier one celebrities, such as Post Malone, guest star on longstanding ghost hunting reality show Ghost Adventures (2008-present).
