This is the house of self —our physical appearance and our personality. 2nd: Our values and resources—money, acquisitions and material objects. Here is also our relationship to the natural world and the planet. 3rd: Our immediate surroundings, and our siblings and close compatriots. Our communication—how we use language and express our thoughts, through speaking or writing or art. 4th: Our home and family life; our foundation and roots, often literal, as in real estate. Our style of nurturing is found here, as this house is linked to the mother. 5th: Our self-expression and creativity. This is a social house of play and fun (also casual sexual relationships) and also the house of children. Here we are beginning to integrate into the world. Our good karma from the past shows up here. 6th: Our relationship to our bodies—physical health and healing. Here we see how we organize our daily routines and schedules. This is the house of service, and also of debt. 7th: Marriage, commitment and other contractual (personal or business) relationships, and how we relate to ‘other.’ This house is the mirror to the house of self, as our close relationships are reflections of us. 8th: Death and sexuality, and how we use our passion and power. This house governs longevity, inheritances and our relationships to our ancestors. A house of transformation and rebirth. Here we begin to explore the mystical union with self. 9th: An expansive house of travel, philosophy and higher learning. We seek answers to lofty questions and also seek our unique connection to a higher order. This is a house of spirituality. 10th: Our house of vocation and life path—our dharma, our calling, our purpose. Here we try to understand what the world expects of us. Also the house of authority and leadership, often linked to the father. 11th: Our relationship to community, groups, and friends. We find our tribes and experience our need for connection. From here we begin to look to the future. 12th: Karma and completion; endings. This is the house of dissolution and asceticism—we learn to accept our aloneness and enjoy our solitude. We let go of attachment to material reality and begin to experience the fullness of the unknown. The planets combine forces and work as a team to achieve common goals. This is an aspect of cooperation and collaboration. One planet may be stronger than another, and therefore have a greater voice. Always though, the combined planets create an energy that is greater than just the sum of the combination. Opposition ☍: Planets within 10° either side of a 180° opposition. This creates an essential tension and shows us where we need to change and what we need to assimilate. The planets involved need to learn how to express themselves with the opposition in mind. A learning curve for sure! Square ☐: Planets within 8° either side of a 90° relationship. Stress and conflict. This is confrontive energy, and the friction creates heat for growth through challenge and distress. The way out is always in and through. Trine Δ: Planets within 8° either side of a 120° relationship. Ease and harmony. Here is the support to handle life’s challenges, and often it takes a challenge to activate the gift of a trine. The Angles (transition points, growth points—where the action is): The Ascendant (East, the angle between the 12th and 1st houses): The sign that is on the ascendant describes our appearance and how we want to present ourselves to the world. It is indicative of the filters through which we see our environment, and the window through which we project ourselves. Planets close to the ascendant show us deeper aspects of our personality, and how we are working to refine those aspects. The Descendant (West, the angle between the 6th and 7th houses): The sign that sits on this angle shows how we view our relationships, and also what we look for in our close relationships—how we want to be met. Planets close to this angle further affect our relationship style and needs. The Medium Coeli or Midheaven (South, the angle between the 9th and 10th houses): This is the highest point in the chart, or where we are most visible. The sign here speaks to our work on the planet and what the world ‘expects’ of us. Planets here deepen our understanding of the relationship we have with the world. The Imum Coeli (North, the angle between the 3rd and 4th houses): This is the lowest point of the chart, or where we create our foundation and grow our roots. The sign on this angle tells us how we view security and how we manage family of origin relationships. This is a tender spot and not visible to others, and planets close to this angle help us to understand our ancestral heritage and current family issues. Pamela Norris www.arcanaenterprises.com.
