In retrospect, those Corgis were not great examples of the breed, but I thought they were delightful, so we quickly had a Corgi family of 3 soon after college graduation. After finishing my first champion, I bred my first litter in the late ‘80s. That litter contained my first homebred Champion who won large classes at both the National & Lakeshore Specialties – and just like that, I was started on a lifelong journey in the dog fancy! Over the years I’ve bred multiple Champions, most of whom have been awarded memorable wins at Specialties and all-breed shows, always breeder-owner handled. Those achievements & most especially, the wonderful people I’ve met and close friends I’ve made, keep me going! Judging has enhanced my enjoyment of this breed & I’ve been honored with sweepstakes & Regular assignments for Clubs in Canada, America and the UK. It’s truly a privilege to be chosen by your peers to judge your breed and I’m looking forward to this assignment! 6 Judge Carol Swinney Larklain Kennels, Reg. I was raised on a very large cattle ranch in Casper, Wyoming and my Mother, Elaine P. Erganbright, started raising show dogs (Rough Collies & German Shepards) a few years before I was born. She purchased her first Pembrokes in 1953, importing all her foundation dogs from the finest kennels in England such as Kaydon Kennels, Vennwood Kennels, Stormerbanks, Lees Kennels and the famous Brome Kennels (Rose Johnson who was a wonderful mentor to my Mother).

This trait and ametropic eyes. Microphthalmia and colobomas are well is inherited in an autosomal, incompletely dominant fashion. Dogs described in merle and double merle Dachshunds and Australian heterozygous or homozygous for the merle locus exhibit a wide Shepherds (3, 7, 8). In all breeds, the double merle genotype can range of auditory and ophthalmologic abnormalities, which are be sublethal and is associated with multiple abnormalities of the similar to those observed for the human auditory–pigmentation skeletal, cardiac, and reproductive systems (3, 9, 10). For these disorder Waardenburg syndrome. Mutations in at least five genes reasons, merle-to-merle breedings are strongly discouraged (9). have been identified as causative for Waardenburg syndrome; Interestingly, many of the abnormalities associated with merle however, the genetic bases for all cases have not been determined. dogs are remarkably similar to those observed in Waardenburg Linkage disequilibrium was identified for a microsatellite marker syndrome (WS) (11). WS is an autosomal dominant auditory– with the merle phenotype in the Shetland Sheepdog.

Your involvement with this study is very much appreciated by the project investigators and participating breed clubs. Our ultimate goal for this project is reduce the prevalence of degenerative myelopathy (DM) in dogs and to gain further understanding of the disease cause and progression. Dogs that have clinical signs or a presumptive diagnosis of DM have tested as genetically affected for this risk factor. A relatively high percentage of dogs in several breeds (including Boxers, Pembroke Welsh Corgis, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers and Rhodesian Ridgebacks) have the predisposing mutation. It is important to note that there are a large number of dogs that have tested as genetically affected, but are reported as clinically normal by their owners. It may be that many of these dogs will develop clinical signs as they get older or that the mutation will never manifest in these dogs.
