Now, thanks to a Doug Jehl New York Times piece, we know about Ibn al-Shaykh al-Libi, the defector who alleged that Iraq was training Al Qaeda members in the use of explosives and illicit weapons. Al-Libi was Scooter Libby’s dream come true. But it turns out — even as his claims were making their way into Administration speeches — that as early as February 2002, American intelligence agencies knew that al-Libi was making the stuff up. Imagine the scene in the West Wing. Here are Cheney and the rest of the cabal (W was doubtless off mountain biking, or brush-clearing) looking at al-Libi’s claims on the one hand, and on the other, the Defense Intelligence Agency’s warning not to buy what al-Libi was selling. They had a choice to make: trust American intelligence, or trust neocon ideology. They picked ideology. The next time you hear the “everyone-believed-Saddam-was-training-Al-Quaeda” talking point, remember that there were red lights flashing in the White House telling them al-Libi was a fabricator. There’s a word for holding fast to a belief despite the evidence: fundamentalism. Is a faith-based foreign policy cult really the best we can do? Photo: Timothy Harris VULNERABLE TO MANIPULATION Interviews with Migrant Youth and Youth Remittance-Recipients in the Kyrgyz Republic MAY 2016 Executive Summary Research conducted by Mercy Corps and Foundation for Tolerance International (FTI) in Kyrgyzstan1 reveals a number of risk factors related to violence that exist within the studied youth population of southern Kyrgyzstan. This research was conducted between March and May 2016 in the southern provinces of Osh, Jalalabad, Batken, and in the northern province of Issyk-Kul. In 2010, southern Kyrgyzstan saw an outbreak of violence between ethnic Kyrgyz and ethnic Uzbek citizens. Known locally as the Osh Events, this violence resulted in mass casualties, displacement and destruction of physical infrastructure in the South. In addition, southern Kyrgyzstan is a known origin of people migrating to Syria to join Jabhat al-Nusra or the so-called Islamic State, with official figures citing fewer than 500 people from Kyrgyzstan.2 While this research did not specifically seek out people who migrated to join the fight in the Middle East, some respondents were directly aware of neighbors, friends, acquaintances or people from their communities who had gone. Issyk-Kul was selected as a comparator province for this study due to its multi-ethnic composition and lack of conflict history. Kyrgyzstan is characterized by a young, rapidly expanding population, high levels of rural poverty, insufficient domestic jobs for working-age people, and a high dependence on Russia as a source of remittances. The precipitous reduction in remittances from Russia due to contractions in the Russian economy in the last two years and changes in the ruble/som exchange rate have spurred questions about the population’s vulnerability to destabilization or recruitment to jihadi organizations. -

38/ Pere Antoni Pons The everydayness of power The West Wing If the effect is the same as what happens with me, after seeing any average-quality chapter of The West Wing (1999-2006) the reader-spectator will think he or she is witnessing an incontrovertible landmark in the latest phase of audiovisual narrative. After viewing one of the more dazzling, memorable episodes, he or she will not hesitate to believe that this is to behold one of the major, most perfect intellectual and artistic events of the early twenty-first century, comparable —not only in creative virtuosity but also in meaning, magnitude and scope— with Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel, Shakespeare’s tragedies, Balzac’s The Human Comedy, or the complete recordings of Bob Dylan. Over the top? Even with more rotund words, it would be no exaggeration. Nowadays, nobody can ignore the fact that a colossal explosion in quality has happened over the last decade in the universe of American TV series. The old idea according to which the hapless professionals —scriptwriters, actors and directors— the ones who lack the luck or talent to carve out a niche in Hollywood or to triumph in the world of cinema, have to work in television has now been so thoroughly debunked that it even seems to have been turned on its head. We’re joined once again by the creator of The West Wing, Aaron Sorkin. Aaron, thanks so much for coming back to The West Wing Weekly. AARON: It’s my pleasure. JOSH: It was written by Aaron Sorkin, it was directed by Thomas “Tommy” Schlamme, and it first aired on May 16th, 2001. AARON: Mm-hm. JOSH: When’s the last time you watched it? AARON: May 16th, 2001. JOSH: Not really. AARON: Yeah. JOSH: Not really! AARON: Yeah. I loved watching the episode when it aired. I loved sitting there and sort of pretending I was part of the audience that was seeing it for the first time, pretending I was seeing it for the first time. And there’s hardly any episode that I’ve gone back and watched a second time. JOSH: That’s wild. AARON: Yeah. HRISHI: Is there a reason for that? AARON: Well, I think I mentioned this the last time I did the podcast. There isn’t anything I’ve ever written that I wouldn’t like to have back again so that I could write again, and I don’t feel that way while I’m watching the show, you know, when it airs, but I do feel that way from the second viewing on, and I just don’t want to feel that way about it, you know? I just, I really like remembering the first date, and letting that be the whole relationship. -

Nordicom Review 29 (2008) 2, pp. 309-324 Watching Politics The Representation of Politics in Primetime Television Drama AUDUN ENGELSTAD Abstract What can fictional television drama tell us about politics? Are political events foremost rela- ted to the personal crises and victories of the on-screen characters, or can the events reveal some insights about the decision-making process itself? Much of the writing on popular culture sees the representation of politics in film and television as predominately concerned with how political aspects are played out on an individual level. Yet the critical interest in the successful television series The West Wing praises how the series gives insights into a wide range of political issues, and its depiction of the daily work of the presidential staff. The present article discusses ways of representing (fictional) political events and political issues in serialized television drama, as found in The West Wing, At the King’s Table and The Crown Princess. Keywords: television drama, serial narrative, popular culture, representing politics, plot and format Introduction As is well known, watching drama – whether on TV, in the cinema or on stage – usually involves recognizing the events as they are played out and making some kind of judg- ment (aesthetically, morally, or otherwise) of the action the characters engage in. As Aristotle observed: Drama is about people performing actions. Actions put the interests and commitments of people into perspective, thus forming the basis for conflicts and choices decisive to the next course of action. This basic principle of drama was formu- lated in The Poetics, where Aristotle also made several observations about the guiding compository principles of a successful drama.
