(DRAFT version – do not cite without permission of the author) WORK IN PROGRESS 1 A note on reading this paper ….. This paper contain many dense and complex ideas and as such it demand a careful reading and will at times be difficult to take in. Modern reading/knowledge styles often insist on an instant understanding and comprehension instead of the art of reading which is in many ways is a deep meditation that requires diligence; in other words you need to spend time absorbing any new ideas, pausing and reflecting, looking up unfamiliar words and generally letting the ideas flow through you. The paper was not written for a generalist audience; it was written in a style to suit the audience at the conference who I assumed had a working knowledge of social theory and also were familiar with my work. Of course I would write and have written differently for an audience made up of people from the grassroots – but this was not the moment for this paper. Intellectual thought has a place. We are part of a community where you can build upon my ideas, dialogue and apply them in your own work. -

Perlin, JD “Sanism,” an irrational prejudice against people with mental illness, is of the same quality and character as other irrational prejudices such as racism, sexism, homophobia, and ethnic bigotry that cause (and are reflected in) prevailing social attitudes [1, 2]. It infects both our jurisprudence and our lawyering practices. Sanism is largely invisible and largely socially acceptable. It is based predominantly upon stereotype, myth, superstition, and deindividualization and is sustained and perpetuated by our use of alleged “ordinary common sense” (OCS) and heuristic reasoning in irrational responses to events in both everyday life and the legal process [3, 4]. I have written extensively about the roots of the assumptions that are made by the legal system about persons with mental disabilities. These mistaken assumptions include: that people with mental illness are erratic, deviant, sexually uncontrollable, emotionally unstable, superstitious, lazy, and ignorant; that they demonstrate a primitive morality; they are invariably more dangerous than persons without mental illness, and such dangerousness is easily and accurately identified by experts; that for a person in treatment for mental illness to decline to take prescribed antipsychotic medication is an excellent predictor of (1) future dangerousness and (2) need for involuntary institutionalization; that people with mental illness should be segregated in large, distant institutions because their presence threatens the economic and social stability of residential communities; that they give in too easily to their basest instincts and do not exercise appropriate self-restraint [5]. -

We hope that you will find it to be an informative and entertaining guide for new mentors in the field of neurodiversity. CUNY has been fortunate to be a recipient of a grant from the FAR Fund to enhance the university’s capacity to support its growing population of students with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and to provide training and resources to faculty and staff about autism. We are eternally grateful to Dr. Shirlee Taylor, Executive Director of the FAR Fund for her endless support, confidence, and encouragement. Under the leadership of Assistant Vice Chancellor of Student Inclusion Initiatives, Dr. Christopher Rosa, five pilot campuses were designated to develop best practices to share with the university and interested stakeholders. Our campus Project REACH directors, Dr. Kristen Gillespie of College of Staten Island, Valerie Stewart Lovell of Brooklyn College, Dr. Regina Varin-Mignano of LaGuardia Community College, Dr. Stella Woodroffe of Kingsborough Community College and Marcos Gonzalez of Borough of Manhattan Community College worked tirelessly to create and develop inclusive initiatives, mentor programming and universal design practices for faculty and staff. A huge thanks to Jenna Lamm, who is responsible for the development, programming, creativity, and success of our annual CUNY Neurodiversity Conference. -

[mellow ambient music plays] CHERYL: Since this is a story-based podcast, I don’t have a lot of interviews. This interview is a rebroadcast from the old podcast from 2017 recorded by Skype. It’s been edited just a bit for length. Talila “TL” Lewis has been named a White House Champion of Change and was also named one of the Top 30 Thinkers Under 30 by Pacific Standard in 2015. Talila is an attorney-organizer and visiting professor at Rochester Institute of Technology and National Technical Institute for the Deaf who founded and works with the all-volunteer organization HEARD, which stands for Helping Educate to Advance the Rights of Deaf communities. HEARD focuses on correcting and preventing deaf wrongful convictions, ending abuse of incarcerated people with disabilities; decreasing recidivism rates for deaf returned citizens; and increasing representation of deaf people in professions that can counter mass incarceration and end the attendant school to prison pipeline. Talila created the only national database of deaf incarcerated individuals. This is something the jails and prisons aren’t tracking themselves. Talila also maintains contact with hundreds of deaf incarcerated individuals. TL also leads intersectional campaigns that advance the rights of multiply-marginalized people, including the #DeafInPrison Campaign, the Deaf Prisoner Phone Justice Campaign, and the American Civil Liberties Union’s “Know Your Deaf Rights” Campaign. Neurodiversity Studies
Neurodiversity Studies Building on work in feminist studies, queer studies, and critical race theory, this vol• ume challenges the universality of propositions about human nature, by questioning the boundaries between predominant neurotypes and ‘others’, including dyslexics, autistics, and ADHDers. This is the first work of its kind to bring cutting-edge research across disciplines to the concept of neurodiversity. It offers in-depth explorations of the themes of cure/ prevention/eugenics; neurodivergent wellbeing; cross-neurotype communication; neu• rodiversity at work; and challenging brain-bound cognition. It analyses the role of neuro-normativity in theorising agency, and a proposal for a new alliance between the Hearing Voices Movement and neurodiversity. In doing so, we contribute to a cultural imperative to redefine what it means to be human. To this end, we propose a new field of enquiry that finds ways to support the inclusion of neurodivergent perspectives in knowledge production, and which questions the theoretical and mythological assump• tions that produce the idea of the neurotypical. Working at the crossroads between sociology, critical psychology, medical humani• ties, critical disability studies, and critical autism studies, and sharing theoretical ground with critical race studies and critical queer studies, the proposed new field – neurodiversity studies – will be of interest to people working in all these areas. Hanna Bertilsdotter Rosqvist is an Associate Professor in Sociology and currently a Senior Lecturer in Social work at Södertörn University. Her recent research is around autism, identity politics, and sexual, gendered, and age normativity. She is the former Chief Editor of Scandinavian Journal of Disability Research. Nick Chown is a book indexer who undertakes autism research in his spare time. -

The Senior Pride Network (Toronto) is an association of individuals and organizations committed to promoting appropriate services and a positive, caring environment for elders, seniors and older persons who identify as 2 Spirit, lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, transsexual, queer, intersex and other (2SLGBTTQI+). We envision a series of communities of 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons that are respectful, affirming, supportive, safe and healthy. The Senior Pride Network (Toronto) asserts and advocates for the human, economic, social and cultural rights of 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons. We seek to eradicate all forms of oppression including homophobia, heterosexism, lesbophobia, transphobia, biphobia, sexism, cissexism, racism, antisemitism, settler colonialism, xenophobia, islamophobia, ableism and ageism. We demand the right of all 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons to live their lives free from discrimination, harassment, reprisal, bullying, intimidation, victimization, stigmatization, silencing, being marginalized or being made invisible. 2SLGBTTQI+ Elders, Seniors and Older Persons and Ontario’s Seniors Strategy 2SLGBTTQI+ elders, seniors and older persons face a number of issues that have impacted their lived experiences and may have negatively affected their mental or physical health, their financial and housing circumstances and their overall social well-being. Gaining an understanding of those issues and positively addressing them are necessary to developing and implementing an inclusive and effective Ontario’s Seniors Strategy. -

ffff Attitudes towards individuals who are deaf and hard of hearing Introduction For individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing (DHH), negative attitudes from DHH and hearing individuals can serve as a barrier to healthy social and emotional development22, social integration17, and academic and career success 19. Societal attitudes toward individuals who are deaf is an important research topic because: Attitudes toward DHH individuals are critical aspects of integration into social and academic activities.23 Knowledge of attitudes toward individuals who are DHH contributes to understanding and positive interactions between hearing and DHH individuals.15 What does the research tell us about attitudes toward people who are DHH? Researchers have assessed attitudes toward individuals with disabilities, as well as deaf individuals specifically. Some findings include: Negative attitudes toward individuals with disabilities have existed throughout history and still exist today.8 There are differences in attitudes toward people who are deaf compared to people with other disabilities.16 Hearing people have been found to hold more negative attitudes toward individuals with an intellectual disability than toward individuals who are deaf.7,10 The relationship between attitudes and expectations “Attitudes toward Attitudes can be conveyed through expectations; people tend people with to internalize and fulfill the expectations others have of them.6 disabilities represent Parental expectations strongly influence their deaf childrens’ an individual’s -

Thank you to my maker, my God. i Abstract This exploratory research aims to analyse the applicability of intercultural approaches in family contexts with both hearing and deaf members. The study examines different perspectives of deafness, challenging the over-medicalization of deafness and seeking to review accessibility in practice. We discover alternatives through the innovative use of intercultural intervention outside of its usual ethno-cultural context where, instead, Deaf culture is concerned. -

Centre for Disability Studies Postgraduate Conference 2019 Disability Studies: Past, Present and Future Book of abstracts CDS Leeds #CDSPGConf19 1 Keynote Presentation by Professor Roger Slee Title: Writing fiction – the case of inclusive education and students with disabilities. Notwithstanding espoused commitment to UNCRPD (2006) by education jurisdictions around the world, the educational experiences of children and young people with disabilities do not live up to the promise of inclusive education. Recent reviews of education for students with disabilities in Australia collectively build a narrative of exclusion. Educational exclusion is a stubborn foe. This address will attempt to move beyond critique to identify levers for building the capacity of schools to build inclusive educational cultures. Biography: Roger Slee is the Vice-Chancellor’s appointment to Chair of Education at the University of South Australia. He has previously held research chairs at The University of Western Australia, Goldsmiths College University of London, Victoria University and the Institute of Education UCL where he was the Chair of Inclusive Education. Roger is the former Dean of Education at Goldsmiths, The University of Western Australia and Magill. He holds an honorary chair in critical studies in education at The University of Auckland in New Zealand. He is currently working on major inclusive education projects in Ethiopia and Queensland. Roger is the Founding Editor of the International Journal of Inclusive Education and is on the Editorial Boards of many other journals. He is also the Editor of an important book series published by Sense Publishers. This Series ‘Studies in Inclusive Education’ focuses on the ways in which schools contribute to the failure of different student identities on the basis of gender, race, language, sexuality, disability, socio-economic status and geographic isolation.
