Homeless in our Hometown Ben Ogden, Executive Director of the Welcome Inn, spoke to Shrine 7th and 8th grade students about the 65,104 homeless persons in alone. Ben’s approach to helping the homeless is faith based as he reaches out to local churches to talk about what it means to be homeless, contributors that cause a person to be homeless, and discusses and implements short-term and long-term solutions. The students donated non-perishable snack foods that will help the homeless on weekends where the day shelter is not accessible. Ben encouraged students to write a scripture verse of encouragement for those who are in need that were included in the snack packs. Thank you Ben Ogden and Shrine students for your generosity. Stewardship Thoughts Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Today’s Scripture readings from the Prophet Isaiah and Psalm 112, and the Gospel from the evangelist St. Matthew, depict those who charitably give their blessings to the poor, demonstrate justice, and follow the Lord’s command of being a “light” to others. As Christian stewards pursuing a personal relationship with Jesus and striving to live virtuously, we aspire to become the salt of the earth and the light of the world. By glorifying God through our holiness, prayer, service, and generosity, we witness to others who seek to follow Jesus. Consider lifting up those in need by serving at a soup kitchen, donating to a food bank, or supporting charities that provide direct assistance to our homeless brothers and sisters.

For I was hungry and you gave me food (Matthew 25:35) Our 7th and 8th grade Religious Formation students welcomed speakers Benjamin Ogden, Executive Director of the Welcome Inn, and Paula Dixon, Shrine’s Pastoral Associate in Christian Service. We learned how Shrine parish helps support the Welcome Inn, a day shelter for the homeless in our community. We especially want to thank our Religious Formation families that have generously donated snack items such as juice pouches, apple sauce, fruit cups, granola bars, trail mix, pretzels, crackers and cookies. After the talk, our students assembled snack packs, complete with an encouraging scripture verse, for the homeless to have on hand when the shelter is closed on the weekend.

Our speakers were Paula Dixon, Shrine’s Pastoral Associate Our students were surprised as to how many in Christian Service, and Ben Ogden, Executive Director for homeless are in the tri-county area – 2018 reports South Oakland Citizens for the Homeless Welcome Inn. show 17,000.

We added a personal note to the Scripture Because of the generosity of our families, verses that we added to the snack packs. we were able to send 187 snack packs to the Welcome Inn.
