Dziengowski INTRODUCTION “Periodical appointments, however regulated, or by whomsoever made, would, in some way or other, be fatal to their necessary independence.”1 At the conclusion of the American Revolution in 1783, the average human lifespan was about thirty-five years.2 The Framers, dissatisfied with the Articles of Confederation, convened the Constitutional Convention in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on May 25, 1787. Article III of the resulting U.S. Constitution provided judges of the “supreme and inferior Courts” with presumptive life tenure.3 Fast-forward more than two centuries. Lancaster, PA (October 2, 2019) – On Thursday, October 17, 2019, Dr. Thomas Balcerski will join LancasterHistory to discuss his new book Bosom Friends: The Intimate World of James Buchanan and William Rufus King. The friendship of the bachelor politicians James Buchanan (1791-1868) of Pennsylvania and William Rufus King (1786-1853) of Alabama has excited much speculation through the years. Why did neither marry? Might they have been gay? Or was their relationship a nineteenth-century version of the modern-day “bromance?” In Bosom Friends, Dr. Thomas Balcerski explores the lives of these two politicians and discovers one of the most significant collaborations in American political history. His work demonstrates that intimate male friendships among politicians were—and continue to be—an important part of success in American politics. Thomas Balcerski, Ph.D. is an assistant professor of history at Eastern Connecticut State University, where he teaches courses broadly in American history. Balcerski received his Ph.D. from Cornell University in 2014. -

~epartment of Wustite PROCEEDINGS IN THE SUPREME COURT OF THE UNITED STATES IN MEMORY OF JUSTICE GOLDBERG Monday, October 15, 1990 REMARKS OF THE ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE UNITED STATES MR. CHIEF JUSTICE, and may it please the Court: The Bar of this Court met today to honor the memory of Arthur Joseph Goldberg, Associate Justice of the Supreme Court from 1962 to 1965. Arthur Goldberg served the Nation with distinction as a lawyer, soldier, Cabinet officer, Supreme Court Justice, and diplomat. Born in Chicago in 1908, he was educated in the Chicago public schools and at Northwestern University, where he , was first in his law school class and Editor-in-Chief of the Law Review. By special dispensation, Arthur Goldberg sat for the Illinois bar examination before he reached the age of 21. He was admitted 'to the Illinois bar in 1929 and began a general law I practice in Chicago. He opened his own law office in 1933, and soon began hanaling labor matters for clients such as the United Steelworkers and the Chicago Newspaper Guild. During World War II, Arthur Goldberg served under William J. Donovan as Chief of the Labor Division in the Office of strategic services. He carried out several intelligence missions to Europe, where he organized transportation workers into a valuable Allied intelligence network. After the war, he resumed his law practice and soon gained recognition as a preeminent labor lawyer. He served as general - 2 counsel to the United Steelworkers from 1948 to 1961. As general counsel to the Congress of Industrial Organizations, Arthur Goldberg played a major role in the merger of that organization and the American Federation of Labor in 1955. -

Submitted for the degree of M.A., 1990. Department of History, University of Durham. This study concentrates on the period from the introduction of the Tallmadge amendment in February 1819 to the settiing of the controversy with the famous Compromise in March 1820. The Missouri crisis is erroneously viewed as the product of politics first, with antislavery a poor second. There are examples of growing sectional antagonism before 1819. But at no time was consistent sectional unity possible on economic and political issues. Only slavery produced the unity and strength of feeling to provoke a major sectional conflict. -

Gordon A. Craig President American Historical Association 1982 11 } Gordon Alexander Craig, president of the American Historical Association, is the J. E. Wallace Sterling Professor of the Humanities at Stanford University. He was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1913; at the age of twelve he immigrated to the U.S. from Canada with his parents. He attended Princeton University where he re ceived his AB in 1936, the MA in 1939, and his PhD in 1941. During this period he was also a Rhodes Scholar to Oxford where he received a B.Litt. in 1938. His field is ndern Europe with research interests focusing on Germany since 1648, diplomacy, and military affairs. Professor Craig taught as an instructor at Yale Uni versity from 1939 to 1941; after two years he returned to Princeton to teach there. He remained at Princeton for the next twenty years: from 1941 to 1943 as an instruc tor, from 1943 to 1949 as associate professor, and from 1950 to 1961 as full professor. Concurrently he was a visiting professor at Columbia University in 1947—48 and in 1949—50. In 1961 he imjved to Stanford where he teaches three days a week to classes of four hundred students. He is widely regarded as aong the greatest of the uni versity’s teachers, and in recognition of his vital con tribution to scholarship and teaching he became the first J. E. Wallace Sterling Professot of the Humanities in 1969, a rank he still holds. He chaired the history de partment from 1972 to 1975 and again from 1978 to 1979, and had a great impact in strengthening the department.
