Photo by Chad Coppess/Travelsd.Com 2017 Directory Photo by Chad Coppess/travelsd.com MISSION: The South Dakota Rural Electric Association is devoted to unifying, pro- moting and protecting the interests of member electric cooperatives in South Dakota by providing leadership, training, communication, legislative representation and other member services. WE BELIEVE: That rural families in rural enterprises are a balancing force in the social and political structure that is vital to the stability, preservation and improvement of representative democratic government, of an efficient and economic productive system and of a satisfying world society; That the individually owned and operated farm is essential to the preserva- tion and enrichment of the private enterprise system; That people living in rural areas cannot successfully compete with other segments of economic structure in maintaining and improving the standard of living unless rural America does effectively organize its economic and social forces; That cooperative principles and techniques are the best ways and means for the rural people to continuously achieve these ends. Touchstone Energy® Four Core Values u Integrity u Innovation u Accountability u Commitment to Community STATEMENT OF PURPOSE The South Dakota Rural Electric Association, established in 1942, exists to serve our members. SDREA operates on the premise that, by pooling resources, members can receive services through SDREA more cost-effectively and ef- ficiently than they do on their own. We believe: 1. That we exist because of our members. We continually evaluate our ser- vices and funding to ensure they are meeting our members’ needs, while acknowledging that those needs vary and may be dictated by ongoing or emerging issues. We value our members’ input and encourage participa- tion in our services, committees and other endeavors. 2. That we can meet our members’ needs by providing service and leader- ship in several key areas including government relations, regulatory affairs, safety, education and training, communications and member support. These services are essential for building and maintaining a strong rural electric cooperative presence at local, state and national levels. 3. That our Association’s success and the ability to effectively represent our members in the areas listed above depends upon the people we employ. We must attract and retain competent employees capable of strategic thinking and executing our services in the best interests of our entire membership. We must provide a work environment that encourages growth, training and development. 4. That we lead by example and strive for excellence in all areas and can serve as professional role models for our members. 5. That we can foster a positive image with key audiences including our members (and in turn their members), elected and appointed officials and their staffs and media, collaborating with key stakeholders and sponsoring statewide programs and other endeavors. 6. In the cooperative way of doing business. We support the seven coop- erative principles which include: voluntary and open membership; demo- cratic member control; members’ economic participation; autonomy and independence; education, training and information; cooperation among cooperatives; and concern for community. 7. That being organized as a cooperative gives us and our members a business advantage, especially in an ever-changing, dynamic energy environment. Because of our unique organization structure, we have an obligation to educate key audiences about what makes cooperatives unique and to build acceptance among those audiences of the cooperative business model. The goal of this scorecard is simple: make government transparent to the people they represent. History has proven that free people are capable of extraordinary things—but many current laws hold South Dakotans back from truly thriving. That’s why our growing community of activists across the state are fighting every day to make the Mount Rushmore State a better place to live, work, and raise a family. We support legislation that enhances liberty and opportunity and oppose legislation that restricts those two concepts. As such, the bills listed in this scorecard reflect that. What you won’t see are grades or scores for individual legislators. What you will see is a description of issues and legislation with how our legislators voted during the two years that they served in this term. We hope this information helps you stay informed about how your Senators and Representatives have voted on important issues. If nothing else, it will serve as a basis for your conversations with them. We trust that policymakers are working to remove barriers that make it more difficult for South Dakotans to achieve their full potential and believe this tool will help shape their thinking toward that.
