PEDIGREE INSIGHTS Marty Wygod, Felt It Necessary to Have Him Gelded
Andrew Caulfield, December 17-Shared Belief To me, his only flaw is that his breeders, Pam and PEDIGREE INSIGHTS Marty Wygod, felt it necessary to have him gelded. B Y A N D R E W C A U L F I E L D Needless to say, that operation is no bar to victory in the Kentucky Derby, as Funny Cide and Mine That Bird Saturday, Betfair Hollywood Park have demonstrated in recent years. CASHCALL FUTURITY-GI, $751,500, BHP, 12-14, 2yo, Jerry Hollendorfer=s assistant Dan Ward said of 1 1/16m (AWT), 1:42, ft. Shared Belief that Ahe=s not a huge horse, but he=s 1--sSHARED BELIEF, 121, g, 2, by Candy Ride (Arg) growing all the time.@ But then his sire Candy Ride isn=t 1st Dam: Common Hope, by Storm Cat a big horse either, at just half an inch over 16 hands, 2nd Dam: Sown, by Grenfall and that didn=t stop him shining at the ages of three 3rd Dam: Bad Seed, by Stevward and four. That statement needs a little footnote. O-Jungle Racing LLC, KMN Racing LLC, Hollendorfer, Although Candy Ride was officially four when he won Litt, Solis II & Todaro; B-Pam & Martin Wygod (KY); the GII American H. and the GI Pacific Classic in 2003, T-Jerry Hollendorfer; J-Corey S Nakatani. $375,000. he was still a month short of his actual fourth birthday Lifetime Record: 3-3-0-0, $451,200. *1/2 to Little when he defeated Medaglia d=Oro by more than three Miss Holly (Maria=s Mon), GSW, $217,430; Double lengths in the Del Mar feature. -

Kentucky Derby
The Legacy and Traditions of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby has taken place annually in Louis- ville, Kentucky since 1875. It was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. at his track he called Churchill Downs, and it has run continuously since that first race. This first jewel of the Triple Crown has produced famous winners, with thirteen of these winners gaining that Triple Crown title. Lewis limited the Derby to only 3-year old horses. The race has evolved and grown over time and has changed since its first running, remaining an important event for more than a century. Through the study of the Derby’s influential historic traditions, notable winners and horse farms in Kentucky, and its profound cultural TABLE OF CONTENTS impact, this program will identify and explore these dif- Background and History…..2 ferent aspects that all contribute to the excitement and legacy of the “most exciting two minutes in sports.” Curriculum Standards…..3 Traditions ................ 4-8 Triple Crown ............ 9 Derby Winners ........ 10-11 Notable Horse Farms….12-13 Significant Figures…...15 Bibliography………….16 Image list…………….17-18 Derby Activities…….19-22 To replicate the races he witnessed in Europe, Meri- wether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of explorer Wil- liam Clark, created three races in the United States that resembled those he’d attended in Europe. The first meet was in May of 1875. Family ties to the horse racing world led Clark to his purchase of what would become Churchill Downs, named after his uncles, John and Henry Churchill in 1883. -

BILL NADER by Bill Finley Bill Nader Is Coming Home
FRIDAY, DECEMBER 4, 2015 SHARED BELIEF SUCCUMBS TO COLIC Q & A: BILL NADER By Bill Finley Bill Nader is coming home. A former senior vice president and chief operating officer at the NYRA tracks, he left in 2007 to take the job as the executive director of racing for the Hong Kong Jockey Club. Recently, Nader announced that he would be leaving Hong Kong to return home. He says he will end his tenure with the HKJC in January and will likely return to the U.S. in February. The TDN sat down with Nader to find out why he is leaving Hong Kong and what he plans to do upon his return. TDN: After nine years working at what is widely viewed as one of the best racing operations in the world why did you now decided to leave and return to the U.S.? BN: This is very a difficult job to walk away from because I like Hong Kong, I like living here, I like the people, I love the organization.
