A shellfish growing area is defined by CT DA/BA as any area that supports or could support the growth and/or propagation of molluscan shellstock. Shellfish are defined by CT DA/BA as oysters, clams, mussels, and scallops, either shucked or in the shell, fresh or frozen, whole or in part. All shellfish growing areas are classified by CT DA/BA in accordance with the Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference (ISSC) National Shellfish Sanitation Program Model Ordinance (NSSP-MO) and CT General Statutes Chapter 491, §26-192e. These classifications, summarized below, are established to minimize health risks and may restrict the take and use of shellfish from some areas. They are based on fecal coliform bacteria standards as provided in the NSSP-MO (Interstate Shellfish Sanitation Conference, 2007). Any shellfish area, regardless of classification, may be temporarily closed to all activities when a potential public health emergency exists as a result of a storm event, flooding, sewage, chemical, or petroleum discharges, or a hazardous algal bloom. Guilford/Madison Estuary TMDL Page 5 of 121 FINAL Estuary 9: Guilford/Madison Summary September 2013 Shellfish harvesting has been divided into two designated uses as specified in the Connecticut WQS: shellfish harvesting suitable for direct human consumption (Class SA waters), and shellfish harvesting suitable for commercial operations requiring depuration or relay (Class SB waters). The impaired segments in the Guilford/Madison Estuary include only Class SA waters. Shellfish Bed Classifications and Closures in the Guilford/Madison Estuary Shellfish classification areas in the Guilford/Madison Estuary are shown in Figure 2. The following classifications for shellfish growing areas are defined by CT DA/BA: APPROVED AREA: Is a classification used to identify a growing area that is safe for the direct marketing or consumption of shellfish.

  • Breeding Populations of Terns and Skimmers on Long Island Sound and Eastern Long Island: 1972-19751
1974-1977 No. 73 PROCEEDINGS OF THE LINNA A SOCIETY OF NEW YORK For the Three Years Ending March 1977 Date of Issue: August 1977 EDITORIAL COMMITTEE Members who participated in editing this issue of the Proceedings were: Berry Baker, Eugene Eisenmann, John Farrand, Jr., and Mary LeCroy. The Committee wishes to thank Alice Oliveri for typing manuscripts. Catherine Pessino, Editor Breeding Populations of Terns and Skimmers on Long Island Sound and Eastern Long Island: 1972-19751 DAVID DUFFY By 1972, it had become apparent to many working on colonial sea birds that the nesting terns and skimmers of Long Island were being increasingly exposed to a broad spectrum of pressures that might be causing severe changes in their populations. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB's) had been implicated in birth deformities of Common and Roseate Terns (Sterna hirundo and S. dougallii; Hays and Risebrough 1972). Mercury had been linked to feather loss in young terns (Gochfeld 1971). Egg shell thinning had been noted at several colonies in the area (Hays, pers. com.; pers. obs.); such thinning is believed to be caused by deriva tives of DDT (Wiemeyer and Porter 1970; Peakall 1970). Further pressure on tern populations had come from invasions of nesting sites by rats, development of recreational beaches, human harassment, and natural suc cession rendering colony sites unfit for nesting. For all of these factors there were only scattered and often anecdotal accounts of acute situations. What, if any, long-term effect there might be for the tern populations was unknown. Were Common and Roseate Terns holding their own? Or were they, instead, retreating to a few, safe colonies as their populations declined? Little as we knew of Commons and Rose ates, we knew even less of what was happening to Least Terns (Sterna albifrons) and Black Skimmers (Rynchops niger).

New England Antiquities Research Association Hammonasset Line Chapter 1: A Summer Solstice Sunset Line A Field Report by Tom Paul This is Part 1 of a multipart series initially presented at the NEARA Spring Meeting, March 30, 2001 In the upper Summer Hill Road area in the town of Madison, Connecticut exists many pre- colonial stone structures. The town is located on Long Island Sound in mid Connecticut and once was part of the town of Guilford, incorporated in 1639. The area of the initial study is in the northern part of the town on the eastern border of Killingworth and the Hammonasset Reservoir. This was the last section of Guilford settled, in 1730. Northern Guilford and Madison are not good places to farm. There are too many rocks and not enough good soil. Today the Region Water Authority owns much of this land having purchased most of it in the 1930’s. The land has been relatively undisturbed for the past 400 years. The Hammonasset Indians occupied the land before the 1730 colonial period. These Indians lived on the west side of the Connecticut River to the Hammonasset River along the Sound. They also resided westward of that river in North Madison and North Guilford to Bluff Head. Map of Hammonasset Line A study of stone structures was started in this area in 1996 after observing a 5-foot high neatly formed stone structure the shape of a whale viewed from the south side of my home. Having moved into the area the year before, I found the structures unusual and interesting.
