The players are: Rohan Toole (NSW); Dominique Ratcliffe (NSW); Robert Palmer (NSW) and Samantha Calvert (QLD). ASP NEWS REEL AUSSIE NEWS : JULY 2016 Tamika Saxby chalked up PSA Tour title #4 in succession after winning the 16 South Australian Open at the new Aquatic Recreation Centre facility in Campbelltown. The spectacular ARC boasts 5 glass back courts with movable walls. Saxby kept her winning streak going in the PSA W5 Tour final beating Hong Kong’s Tong Tsz-Wing (HKG) 12-10, 10-12, 11-7, 12-10 in the 45 minute final. Squash Australia announced it will revamp the Australian Squash Tour in 2017 25 by introducing an additional prize fund to reward the top 3 male and female Australian players at the end of the Tour. 17 year old Lachlan Coxsedge (WN 451) caused a first round boil over when 28 he beat fellow Aussie David Clegg (WN193) at the Bendigo Open. Coxsedge from Queensland was too good for the #5 seed winning 11-8, 3-11, 11-9, 11-8 in 34 minutes to record his first win on the PSA World Tour. Australian Doubles Teams have been seeded to win two Gold medals at the 29 World Doubles Championship in Darwin in August. The Australian pairing of Cameron Pilley and Ryan Cuskelly are the #1 seeds in the Men's Doubles whilst the Gold medalists from the 2014 Commonwealth Games, Rachael Grinham and David Palmer, have been installed as the #1 seeds in the Mixed Doubles. Jessica Turnbull reached her first PSA Tour final at the Bendigo International. 31 Despite being ranked higher Turnbull (WN91) found the 18 year old Egyptian Hana Ramadan (WN116) too strong in the 36 minute final. Ramadan won 11- 6, 11-4, 9-11, 11-9. Western Australia’s Greg Chan won the U13B at the Hong Kong Junior Open. This was an awesome effort considering he was seeded 9-16. Chan had to fight back from 1 game to 2 down to beat Malaysian Chandaran Ameeshenraj (2) in the final 11-6, 9-11, 10-12, 11-4, 11-4. Chan was particularly impressive in the semi final where he beat the #1 seed Malaysian Lim Kai Shan Andrik 11- 9, 11-9, 11-5. Ethan Eyles (5/8) finished 7th in the U15B. ASP PREVIEW WORLD DOUBLES By Howard Harding Hosts Australia are predicted to take gold in two of the three events in the 2016 WSF World Doubles Squash Championships in Darwin next month according to the seedings announced today by the World Squash Federation - while Queenslander Rachael Grinham is expected to become the first player in the sport's history to win gold in three successive championships. The championships, featuring Men's, Women's and Mixed events, will take place at the Darwin Squash Centre in the Northern Territory capital city from 15-18 August. Grinham, the 39-year-old former world number one, will partner Cameron Pilley, the world No.14 from New South Wales, in the Mixed Doubles. Winner of the World Mixed title in 2004 in India in 2004 with David Palmer, and the 2006 gold medal on home soil in Melbourne in 2006 partnering Joseph Kneipp, Grinham is also the reigning Commonwealth Games Mixed Doubles champion after claiming the 2014 title in Scotland, again with Palmer. Pilley also struck gold in Glasgow in the Men's Doubles - with Palmer - and reached the 2006 World Mixed final (with Amelia Pittock) where he lost out to his 2016 partner Grinham. Pilley is bidding for a Darwin double as top seed in the Men's Doubles, with left-hander Ryan Cuskelly. Also a New South Welshman, Cuskelly is ranked 16 in the world. Grinham is seeded to reach the Women's Doubles final, with Brisbane-based world No.21 Donna Urquhart - but it is the Indian pairing Joshna Chinappa & Dipika Pallikal who are firm favourites for gold after becoming the Commonwealth Games champions in 2014 against the odds. Both sharing India's highest-ever world ranking of 10, Chinappa & Pallikal would become India's first ever world squash champions. Colombia will be making their World Doubles debut. Following their Pan American Games Men's Doubles title success last year in Canada, Andrés Herrera & Juan Camilo Vargas will be appearing in the Darwin championship for the first time, where they are the fifth seeds. Compatriot Miguel Angel Rodriguez, the world No.5 renowned for his spectacular diving around the court, will be bidding to cause an upset in the Mixed championship, where he and partner Catalina Pelaez are the No.6 seeds. ASP PREVIEW WORLD DOUBLES By Howard Harding 2014 Commonwealth Games stars Alan Clyne & Greg Lobban, the local pair who thrilled the crowds by making the bronze medal play-off in Glasgow, lead the Scottish bid for success where they are second seeds in the Men's Doubles. But the Scots may well have to overcome third-seeded New Zealand pairing Paul Coll & Campbell Grayson to make the Men's final. Early action in the three championships will take place in pools, before reaching the semi-finals on Wednesday 17 August and the finals the following day. ASP squashmedia .com.au LARKIN CLAIMS SA OPEN Josh Larkin claimed the 2018 South Australian Open with a strong 3-0 victory over Rhys Dowling in July. Whilst the match was tight Dowling would have been feeling the effects of a tough semi final against Enzo Corigliano (France) which went for 62 minutes. That match up was extremely tight and required Dowling to fight back from 1-2 down. Larkin got off to a slow start in his first round match against sentimental favourite Mike Corren but once he hit top gear it was all over for the “Moose”! ASP Mixed Doubles Cameron Pilley & Donna Urquhart Men’s Doubles Zac Alexander & David Palmer Aussie Aussie Aussie, oi! oi! oi! ASP squashmedia .com.au Squash Media would like to congratulate Cameron, David, Donna, Rachael and Zac on their awesome achievements GREEN & GOLD at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. To David Palmer and Rachael Grinham ... once again thank you for so many wonderful memories over 20 years at the CG. David Palmer has now won 3 Gold, 2 Silver and 4 Bronze Medals from 6 Games (in actual fact it is 9 medals from 5 Games because he didn’t win a medal at his first Games appearance). I’m proud to say I was in the audience to witness your 9th medal ... GOLD! Rachael Grinham has now won 2G, 2S and 4B from 5 Games. Another fantastic record of achievement. Winning medals at the Commonwealth Games is a wonderful achievement but as 41 year olds ... well that is simply incredible! Both players may have lost a little speed but their shots and tactics are still awesome Congratulations & thank you Refs! Steve Walton put it best “I thought they did a sensational job because the pressure is immense. The amount of information that they have to manage now is quite extreme particularly when you are the main ref in centre court and you have ear pieces, iPads, 2 competitive players and you are seated right amongst the spectators that groan every time a decision goes against their player. The refs are also competing to referee in the big matches and they have their own behind the scenes challenges to manage also.” ASP squashmedia .com.au to watch.

Last December we presented our case to the IOC’s Programme Commission and this day in May we shall do so to the IOC Executive Board in St Petersburg, Russia, along with the other shortlisted sports for the place on the programme of the 2020 Olympic Games. The presentation group will be led by WSF President Ramachandran and features our two world champions Nicol David and Ramy Ashour, whose passion and charisma are sure to impress the IOC President Jacques Rogge and his fourteen IOC Board colleagues. The bid film will be shown – it features the two players and has already been viewed nearly 110,000 times, along with the video giving a snapshot of the 185 countries that play squash (you can see both at http://www.worldsquash.org/ws/?p=10564) – along with a new film, that is being finished featuring innovation, broadcast and presentation. The spoken presentations will be accompanied by over 70 great slides illustrating the points made. What happens next is not confirmed. Originally it was stated that one sport would be recommended for ratification by the full IOC membership but indications now are that a few sports may be put forward for the final vote. That will be made clear on the evening of 29th May and we must hope that we are there for the final decision in Buenos Aires on 8th September.

ASP CONGRATULATIONS ASP Cuskelly Reaches Last 16 of PSA World Championships ASP squashmedia .com.au A NEW DIRECTION The ASP Newsletter has moved to a Quarterly Edition. Sadly, there isn’t sufficient “Aussie” action to warrant a monthly publication. However, when the activity increases the publication will move back to being published monthly. Without sounding negative it is very hard to get excited about the Australian Squash Tour for 2019. Events are few and far between and there are too many CLOSED events. Some clubs/centres have simply not announced their event for 2019 ... please do so ASAP. It is alarming from this perspective ... players will now be forced to go overseas to chase world ranking points and competition. It’s now going to be an even slower climb up the ladder if you want to be a professional squash player based in Australia. Taking out closed events which attract minimal PSA points, so far the calendar for men is offering just 9 events! There are 7 x C5, one C10 and a C20 event (congratulations to the organisers of the Squash Melbourne event who are now offering an event with prizemoney greater than the Australian Open). For the women it is even worse 6 events! 4 x C5 and 2 x C10 events. Besides sponsorship another impact on whether a promoter decides to run an event or not is the currency exchange. Prizemoney is given out in US Dollars. Currently, the Aussie Dollar is low in comparison to the USD so there is an increased financial risk for promoters.

ASP 2Squash0AUSTRALIAN16 PLAYER MAKING HEADLINES Zac Alexander The most successful Aussie male player was without doubt Zac Mike Corren Alexander who won 8 domestic Rex Hedrick PSA Tour Titles in 2016. Matt Hopkin Josh Larkin Tamika Saxby was our most squashmedia Tamika Saxby impressive female player winning 5 .com.au PSA Tour Titles on home soil. Matt Hopkin 2016 The Australian Squash Player Annual has been created and compiled by Kim Schramm for Squash Media. 2016 was a year to celebrate. Whilst our athletes didn’t win World Championships they performed well on the PSA World Tour. They collectively won 18 PSA Titles (compared to 13 in 2015 and 17 in 2014). One performance that stood out as being absolutely superb wasn’t a winning one. It was that of Cameron Pilley reaching the final of the PSA World Series. Just getting into the draw is tough enough! One has to perform consistently over 7 World Series events: US Open, Qatar Classic, Hong Kong Open, Tournament of Champions, Windy City Open, British Open and the El Gouna International. Players are awarded points based on their result at each World Series event: Winner 100 points, Runner Up 65, Semi Finalist 40, Quarter Finalist 25, 2nd Round 15 and 1st Round 10. The Top 8 qualifiers were Mohamed El Shorbagy 640 points, Greg Gaultier 335, Nick Matthew 225, Omar Mosaad 220, Miguel Ángel Rodríguez 175, Simon Rosner 155, Mathieu Castagnet 150 and Cameron Pilley 130. Pilley hit a “purple patch of form” and reached the final. Despite losing the final to Greg Gaultier, Pilley was at his absolute best beating World #1 Mohamed El Shorbagy in the semi final.
