April 27, 2009 This dissertation is about ways in which our rational credences are constrained: by norms governing our opinions about counterfactuals, by the opinions of other agents, and by our own previous opinions. In Chapter 1, I discuss ordinary language judgments about sequences of counterfactuals, and then discuss intuitions about norms governing our cre- dence in counterfactuals. I argue that in both cases, a good theory of our judg- ments calls for a static semantics on which counterfactuals have substantive truth conditions, such as the variably strict conditional semantic theories given in STALNAKER 1968 and LEWIS 1973a. In particular, I demonstrate that given plausible assumptions, norms governing our credences about objective chances entail intuitive norms governing our opinions about counterfactuals. I argue that my pragmatic accounts of our intuitions dominate semantic theories given by VON FINTEL 2001, GILLIES 2007, and EDGINGTON 2008. -

Gottlob Frege Patricia A. Blanchette This is the penultimate version of the essay whose final version appears in the Oxford Handbook of Nineteenth-Century German Philosophy, M. Forster and K. Gjesdal (eds), Oxford University Press 2015, pp 207-227 Abstract Gottlob Frege (1848-1925) made significant contributions to both pure mathematics and philosophy. His most important technical contribution, of both mathematical and philosophical significance, is the introduction of a formal system of quantified logic. His work of a more purely- philosophical kind includes the articulation and persuasive defense of anti-psychologism in mathematics and logic, the rigorous pursuit of the thesis that arithmetic is reducible to logic, and the introduction of the distinction between sense and reference in the philosophy of language. Frege’s work has gone on to influence contemporary work across a broad spectrum, including the philosophy of mathematics and logic, the philosophy of language, and the philosophy of mind. This essay describes the historical development of Frege’s central views, and the connections between those views. Introduction Friedrich Ludwig Gottlob Frege was born on November 8, 1848 in the Hanseatic town of Wismar. He was educated in mathematics at the University of Jena and at the University of Göttingen, from which latter he received his doctorate in 1873. He defended his Habilitation the next year in Jena, and took up a position immediately at the University of Jena. Here he spent his entire academic career, lecturing in mathematics and logic, retiring in 1918. His death came on July 26, 1925 in the nearby town of Bad Kleinen.1 Frege is best known for three significant contributions to philosophy. -

Introduction By definition, the reference of an indexical depends on the context of utterance. For ex- ample, what proposition is expressed by saying I am hungry depends on who says this and when. Since Kaplan (1978), context dependence has been analyzed in terms of two parameters: an utterance context, which determines the reference of indexicals, and a formally unrelated assignment function, which determines the reference of anaphors (rep- resented as variables). This STATIC VIEW of indexicals, as pure context dependence, is still widely accepted. With varying details, it is implemented by current theories of indexicali- ty not only in static frameworks, which ignore context change (e.g. Schlenker 2003, Anand and Nevins 2004), but also in the otherwise dynamic framework of DRT. In DRT, context change is only relevant for anaphors, which refer to current values of variables. In contrast, indexicals refer to static contextual anchors (see Kamp 1985, Zeevat 1999). This SEMI-STATIC VIEW reconstructs the traditional indexical-anaphor dichotomy in DRT. An alternative DYNAMIC VIEW of indexicality is implicit in the ‘commonplace ef- fect’ of Stalnaker (1978) and is formally explicated in Bittner (2007, 2011). The basic idea is that indexical reference is a species of discourse reference, just like anaphora. In particular, both varieties of discourse reference involve not only context dependence, but also context change. The act of speaking up focuses attention and thereby makes this very speech event available for discourse reference by indexicals. Mentioning something likewise focuses attention, making the mentioned entity available for subsequent dis- course reference by anaphors. -

Roughly, an actual infinity is a completed infinite totality. By contrast, a collection is potentially infinite when it is possible to expand it beyond any finite limit, despite not being a completed, actual infinite totality. The concept of potential infinity thus involves a notion of possibility. On this basis, recent progress has been made in giving an account of potential infinity using the resources of modal logic. Part I of this dissertation studies what the right modal logic is for reasoning about potential infinity. I begin Part I by rehearsing an argument|which is due to Linnebo and which I partially endorse|that the right modal logic is S4.2. Under this assumption, Linnebo has shown that a natural translation of non-modal first-order logic into modal first- order logic is sound and faithful. I argue that for the philosophical purposes at stake, the modal logic in question should be free and extend Linnebo's result to this setting. I then identify a limitation to the argument for S4.2 being the right modal logic for potential infinity. -

Penultimate Draft DE SE KNOWLEDGE AND THE POSSIBILITY OF AN OMNISCIENT BEING Stephan Torre In this paper I examine an argument that has been made by Patrick Grim for the claim that de se knowledge is incompatible with the existence of an omniscient being. I claim that the success of the argument depends upon whether it is possible for someone else to know what I know in knowing (F), where (F) is a claim involving de se knowledge. I discuss one reply to this argument, proposed by Edward Wierenga, that appeals to first-person propositions and argue that this response is unsuccessful. I then consider David Lewis‟s theory of de se attitudes involving the self-ascription of properties. I claim that, according to this theory, there are two senses in which someone else can know what I know in knowing (F). I then argue that the second sense allows for the compatibility of de se knowledge with the existence of an omniscient being. Consider the following case:1 I am at a pool party and around the pool are several burning torches. At some point, I smell the distinct smell of burning hair and I come to know that someone‟s hair is on fire. I then see a reflection in the water of an individual whose hair is on fire and I come to know of this individual that his hair is on fire. Next I realize that everyone is pointing and shouting at me. I suddenly realize: (F) My hair is on fire! 1 2 When I come to realize (F), my behavior changes drastically; I jump into the pool in order to extinguish the flames. -
Leibniz and the Necessity of the Best Possible World

LEIBNIZ AND THE NECESSITY OF THE BEST POSSIBLE WORLD Martin Pickup Leibniz has long faced a challenge about the coherence of the distinction between necessary and contingent truths in his philosophy. In this paper, I propose and examine a new way to save genuine contingency within a Leibnizian framework. I conclude that it succeeds in formally solving the problem, but at unbearable cost. I present Leibniz’s challenge by considering God’s choice of the best possible world (Sect. 2). God necessarily exists and necessarily chooses to actualise the best possible world. The actual world therefore could not be different, for if it were different it would be a distinct and inferior world and hence would not be created. In Sect. 3 I defend Leibniz from this challenge. I argue that while it is necessary for God to choose to create the best possible world, it is not necessary for any world to be the best possible. This is because the criterion for judging perfection can itself be contingent. Different criteria will judge different worlds as the best. Thus it is necessary for God to create the best, but not necessary which is the best. Distinguishing between possible worlds in Leibniz’s sense and in the modern sense allows a fuller exposition of this position. There are worries that can arise with the claim that the criterion of perfection is contingent. -

Roughly: the eternalist perdurantist approach, on which the primary parthood relation is eternal and two-placed, and objects that persist persist by having temporal parts; the parameterist approach, on which the primary parthood relation is eternal and logically three-placed (x is part of y at t) and objects may or may not have temporal parts; and the tensed approach, on which the primary parthood relation is two-placed but (in many cases) temporary, in the sense that it may be that x is part of y, though x was not part of y. (These characterizations are brief; too brief, in fact, as our discussion will eventually show.) Orthogonally, there are different approaches to questions like Peter van Inwa- gen's \Special Composition Question" (SCQ): under what conditions do some objects compose something?1 (Let us, for the moment, work with an undefined notion of \compose;" we will get more precise later.) One central divide is be- tween those who answer the SCQ with \Under any conditions!" and those who disagree. In general, we can distinguish \plenitudinous" conceptions of compo- sition, that accept this answer, from \sparse" conceptions, that do not. (van Inwagen uses the term \universalist" where we use \plenitudinous.") A question closely related to the SCQ is: under what conditions do some objects compose more than one thing? The interminable agony of metaphysics Throughout the twentieth century, numerous philosophers sounded the death knell of metaphysics. Ludwig Wittgenstein, Rudolf Carnap, Martin Heidegger, Gilbert Ryle, J. L. Austin, Jacques Derrida, Jürgen Habermas, Richard Rorty, and, henceforth, Hilary Putnam: a great many tutelary figures have extolled the rejection, the exceeding, the elimination, or the deconstruction of first philosophy. All these necrological chronicles do not have the same radiance, the same seriousness, nor the same motivations, but they all agree to dismiss the discipline, which in the past was considered “the queen of the sciences”, with a violence at times comparable to the prestige it commanded at the time of its impunity. Even today, certain philosophers hastily spread the tragic news with contempt for philosophical inquiry, as if its grave solemnity bestowed upon it some obviousness. Thus, Franco Volpi writes: ‘Grand metaphysics is dead!’ is the slogan which applies to the majority of contemporary philosophers, whether continentals or of analytic profession. They all treat metaphysics as a dead dog.1 In this way, the “path of modern thought” would declare itself vociferously “anti- metaphysical and finally post-metaphysical”. -
On Considering a Possible World As Actual
ON CONSIDERING A POSSIBLE WORLD AS ACTUAL Robert Stalnaker “Hell is paved with primary intensions” English proverb1 1. Introduction In Naming and Necessity2, Saul Kripke presented some striking examples that convinced many philosophers that there are truths that are both necessary and a posteriori, and also truths that are both contingent and a priori. The classic examples of the former are identity statements containing proper names (Hesperus = Phosphorus) and statements about the nature of natural kinds (Gold has atomic number 79). Realistic examples of the second kind of statement are harder to come by - perhaps there are none - but once one sees the idea it is easy to construct artificial examples. The most famous example is based on Gareth Evans’s descriptive name “Julius.”3 “Julius” is, by stipulation, a proper name of the person (whoever he might be) who invented the zip. So the statement “Julius invented the zip” can be known a priori to be true, but since the description is used to fix the reference rather than to give the meaning , of the name, the fact that Julius invented the zip is a contingent fact. Someone other than Julius (the person we in fact named) might have invented the zip, and if some else had invented it instead, it would not have been true that Julius invented the zip. The divergence of the two distinctions was surprising, but the examples are simple and relatively transparent. Kripke’s exposition pointed the way to an abstract description of the phenomena that made it clear, on one level at least, what is going on. -
Abstract 1. Russell As a Mereologist
THE 1900 TURN IN BERTRAND RUSSELL’S LOGIC, THE EMERGENCE OF HIS PARADOX, AND THE WAY OUT Prof. Dr. Nikolay Milkov, Universität Paderborn, [email protected] Abstract Russell‘s initial project in philosophy (1898) was to make mathematics rigorous reducing it to logic. Before August 1900, however, Russell‘s logic was nothing but mereology. First, his acquaintance with Peano‘s ideas in August 1900 led him to discard the part-whole logic and accept a kind of intensional predicate logic instead. Among other things, the predicate logic helped Russell embrace a technique of treating the paradox of infinite numbers with the help of a singular concept, which he called ‗denoting phrase‘. Unfortunately, a new paradox emerged soon: that of classes. The main contention of this paper is that Russell‘s new con- ception only transferred the paradox of infinity from the realm of infinite numbers to that of class-inclusion. Russell‘s long-elaborated solution to his paradox developed between 1905 and 1908 was nothing but to set aside of some of the ideas he adopted with his turn of August 1900: (i) With the Theory of Descriptions, he reintroduced the complexes we are acquainted with in logic. In this way, he partly restored the pre-August 1900 mereology of complexes and sim- ples. (ii) The elimination of classes, with the help of the ‗substitutional theory‘,1 and of prop- ositions, by means of the Multiple Relation Theory of Judgment,2 completed this process. 1. Russell as a Mereologist In 1898, Russell abandoned his short period of adherence to the Neo-Hegelian position in the philosophy of mathematics and replaced it with what can be called the ‗analytic philoso- phy of mathematics‘, substantiated by the logic of relations.
