But can a sexy, debonair -- if somewhat confused -- silver screen icon from a bygone era find passion and abiding love with a woman of the '90s? Her 15 major championship titles is a record for women. Patty Berg Biography. The red-haired, freckle-faced Midwesterner Patty Berg was one of the driving forces in the growth of women's golf in the mid-20th century. And all her life, she remained an ambassador for the game she loved. Berg was a tomboy as a child, playing football in her Minneapolis, Minn., neighborhood where her friends included future Hall of Fame football coach Bud Wilkinson. She took up golf at the age of 13 and by 1934, age 16, she won the city championship. Her first appearance on the national stage came in 1935, when she reached the finals of the U.S. Women's Amateur as a 17-year-old, before losing to Glenna Collett Vare. Berg won her first major championship, the 1937 Titleholders, as an amateur. She would win the Titleholders seven more times, the last coming in 1957. Berg also won the Women's Western Open seven times, the first in 1941 and last in 1958. Those account for 14 of her 15 career major titles, the other one being the 1946 U.S. Women's Open - the first year that tournament was played. Berg turned pro in 1940, but when America entered World War II she joined the Navy and served in the Marines until 1945, working as a recruitment officer. Berg played professionally on the Women's Professional Golf Association (WPGA) tour, the precursor to the LPGA. She helped found the LPGA in 1950 and served as its first president. Over the years, Berg competed while also barnstorming the U.S. by car conducting clinics on behalf of Wilson Sporting Goods. By her estimation, Berg led more than 10,000 clinics in her lifetime. And she was known for having all the shots herself. Berg wasn't a long hitter, but she had a terrific short game and was known as one of the best shotmakers. Berg was a major force on the course during the first decade of the LPGA Tour, winning majors, money titles and scoring titles. Her last win on tour was in 1962, but she continued playing the occasional tournament even after cancer surgery in 1971. Her final appearance on tour didn't come until 1980 when she was 62. Hip replacement surgery that year finally led her to hang up her spikes. Berg never stopped playing golf with friends and continued to enjoy the game into her seventies. She also continued setting up and teaching at golf clinics all over the world. The LPGA annually awards the Patty Berg Award, established in 1978, to "the lady golfer who has made the greatest contribution to women's golf during the year." Berg was one of the original members of the Women's Golf Hall of Fame in 1951 and was also in the first class inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 1974. If I Can't Have You. Adriana lives the life of a recluse and dreams of a man from the past. Trevor, a missing actor from the golden age of television, appears in her life, Adriana has to decide if their real love can outshine the perfection of her dream s ( ) Time-travel romance about a girl who has had a lifelong crush on a handsome 1930's movie star and then gets to meet the man of her dreams for real when he becomes transported through time to the 1990's. When Adriana Howard (who's 29) was a child she came to Sparta, a large palatial seaside estate owned by a self-made tycoon, Harrison Stafford, with her father who was a curator at Sparta. Harrison invited her to visit him sometimes and they watched old movies from the 1930's. Harrison loved talking about the old days and his friend, famous movie star Trevor Montgomery (who disappeared mysteriously in 1938). Adriana fell in love with handsome Trevor, he was everything she ever wanted---suave, wordly, handsome. It was said he was even handsomer than Tyrone Power and Cary Grant. Adriana often feels that she was born in the wrong decade, that she belongs in the 1930's. She became Harrison Stafford's heiress after Adriana's father died, and when Harrison died he left everything to Adriana. Through the years she obtained many of Trevor's belongings. She now lives in the house Trevor used to live in, drives his old classic car, owns many of his possessions, and loves watching his old movies. One day while visiting Sparta (as she does every year on the Fourth of July) she tosses a red rose in a pool and says the words Trevor said to his leading lady in one of his movies, "Come back to me. Please. Come to me." In 1938 Trevor awoke in bed next to a murdered actress. Depressed and knowing he would be found guilty of the crime he was sure he didn't commit (he can't remember what happened) he tried to drown himself in a pool at Sparta during a Fourth of July party. He was found by a woman, his body floating face down in the pool. She was the only one who saw him. No one saw him again. He mysteriously disappeared. But suddenly in 1998 Trevor finds himself suddenly coming out of the water fighting for breath. He wanted to die. Why was he still alive? I don't want to give too much of the plot away but Adriana and Trevor eventually meet. Adriana has a hard time believing Trevor's story at first, that he really is the Trevor Montgomery---movie star, but she finally does start believing. And then there's the mystery of the murder. I really loved dashing and handsome Trevor. He was romantic and charming and really devoted to Adriana. Adriana was reclusive and cautious. Years ago there were stories in the newspapers wrongly hinting that there was more to her relationship with Harrison than there was (implying a romance between the two instead of friendship.) Adriana's character seemed a bit dull at the beginning of the book, but Trevor persuaded her to try new things, loosen up a bit, live a little. Her character improved as the story progressed. I'm a very big fan of classic movies/stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood so the storyline really appealed to me. I loved reading about 1930's Hollywood. It was fun and different. Also, I was curious to see who the murderer was, and how everything was going to work out in the end. This was an enjoyable and entertaining time-travel romance. ( ) If I Can't Have You. Trevor Montgomery was more handsome than Tyrone Power or Cary Grant; more dashing and daring than Errol Flynn; he was a man every woman desired and all men envied. He was a movie star who’d enthralled millions in the 1930’s—and then he disappeared. Adriana Howard is rich beyond imagining, but her life has been cloaked in scandal, and she’d rather love a man on a movie screen—a 1930’s idol and maybe a murderer—than face the real world. He’s suspected of a brutal murder in his own time, but all he remembers is the blood, the knife, and the smell of death. He’s a womanizer, a drunk, and she should kick him out of her life—but he’s traveled 60 years through time in answer to one of her wishes, and she can’t resist his charms. Now she’s willing to risk anything to prove his innocence and win his love.
