HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten A Thesis Submitted in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements for the Degree of Master of Arts in Media Studies at The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee August 2013 ABSTRACT HOW LEGO CONSTRUCTS A CROSS-PROMOTIONAL FRANCHISE WITH VIDEO GAMES by David Wooten The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, 2013 Under the Supervision of Professor Michael Newman The purpose of this project is to examine how the cross-promotional Lego video game series functions as the site of a complex relationship between a major toy manufacturer and several media conglomerates simultaneously to create this series of licensed texts. The Lego video game series is financially successful outselling traditionally produced licensed video games. The Lego series also receives critical acclaim from both gaming magazine reviews and user reviews. By conducting both an industrial and audience address study, this project displays how texts that begin as promotional products for Hollywood movies and a toy line can grow into their own franchise of releases that stills bolster the original work. -
Review of Rogue One: a Star Wars Story
DVD reviews Rogue One: A Star Wars Story (Gareth Edwards US 2016). Walt Disney Studios 2017. Region 1. 2.39:1 widescreen. US$23. Sean Guynes-Vishniac After the release of Revenge of the Sith (Lucas US 2005), the third film in the Star Wars prequel trilogy in 2005, George Lucas and Lucasfilm had no plans to add further feature films to the multi-billion-dollar franchise. This was in part because fans of the original Star Wars trilogy (1977–83) hated the prequels, and because Lucas was now interested in television, starting with the animated series The Clone Wars (2008–14, 2019). When Disney bought Lucasfilm, they announced a new trilogy extending the saga of the Skywalker family, and several standalone non-saga ‘anthology’ films to fill narrative gaps in the universe; Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is the first of these anthology films. Its position raises important questions about the contemporary state of the transmedia sf franchise, while its narrative looks at the limits and possibilities of sf blockbusters’ political work. To provide an easy entry into the franchise’s storyworld, Rogue One offers a cast of new characters that fit (and slightly modify) well-known franchise types: protagonist Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones), for example, pairs the scruffiness of Han Solo with the paternal drama of Luke Skywalker; Chirrut Îmwe (Donnie Yen) takes on the Jedi mystique and mentor role of Obi-Wan Kenobi; K-2SO (Alan Tudyk) is the non-human, comedy-relief sidekick, a cynical update of C-3PO. Cassian Andor (Diego Luna), however, stands out thematically, mixing the scoundrel qualities of Solo with the risky charm of Lando Calrissian, and bringing a moral ambiguity to the normally black-and-white world of Jedi and Sith; perhaps these qualities have led to Andor’s being named as the protagonist of one of the upcoming Star Wars series on the new streaming service Disney+. -
Transmedia Star Wars
H-PCAACA Call for Chapters: Transmedia Star Wars Discussion published by Sean Guynes on Tuesday, September 6, 2016 CALL FOR CHAPTERS: Star Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling Edited by Sean A. Guynes and Dan Hassler-Forest We seek chapter proposals for a volume titledStar Wars and the History of Transmedia Storytelling, which aims to provide an account of the history of the franchise, its transmedia storytelling and world-building strategies, and the consumer practices that have engaged with, contributed to, and sometimes also challenged the development of theStar Wars franchise. We aim to have the collection in print by 2017, the year that marks the 40th anniversary of the first Star Wars film’s release. In those forty years, its narrative, its characters, and its fictional universe have gone far beyond the original film and have spread rapidly across multiple media—including television, books, games, comics, toys, fashion, and theme parks—to become the most lucrative franchise in the current media landscape, recently valued by Forbes at roughly $10 billion. A key goal of this project is to highlight the role and influence ofStar Wars in pushing the boundaries of transmedia storytelling by making world-building a cornerstone of media franchises since the late 1970s. The chapters in this collection will ultimately demonstrate that Star Wars laid the foundations for the forms of convergence culture that rule the media industries today. As a commercial entertainment property and meaningful platform for audience participation,Star Wars created lifelong fans (and consumers) by continuing to develop characters and plots beyond the original text and by spreading that storyworld across as many media platforms as possible. -

Genetic Basis for Force-Sensitivity in Wookiees
Annals of Praetachoral Mechanics, 2014, Vol 1 ! Genetic basis for force-sensitivity in Wookiees Georgia Russella,b and Genevieve Rocheleauc aThe School of Forcensic Science, Kessia, Coruscant, Imperial Galaxy M2J 1Z4 ; bThe Vader Academy For Those Who Don't Mean Good, Iamyourfather, Coruscant, Imperial Galaxy V9J 1S7; c Sith-Force University (SFU), Kessia, Coruscant, Imperial Galaxy BK9 2NO Received July 21, 2013 | Accepted November 30, 2013 Midi-chlorians are sentient life forms, which live in endosymbiosis with all living cells (1). The number of midi-chlorians per cell has been found to correlate with influence in the force (2) and, as such, blood analysis has become common practice for the identification of force-sensitives, particularly by the Jedi Order. However, the genetic basis for increased midi-chlorian replication in force-sensitives is unknown. Here we show drivers to be mutations at both positions 263 and 312012 in Wookiee wookiee midi-chlorian DNA (mdDNA). We anticipate our findings to be a starting point for in vivo studies linking these mutations to force-sensitive phenotypes. Key words: Force-sensitivity, midi-chlorian, single nucleotide variants ! Introduction The need for a powerful army has grown more pertinent in the wake of the rebellion against the Empire. Much research has been aimed at creating powerful fighters for the Sith (3). Sand People, Twi’lek, and Mon Calamari have all been considered, but Wookiees (Wookiee wookiee) are of particular interest due to their intelligence, large size, incredible strength, and unwavering loyalty (4). While powerful in their own right, Wookiees armed with the ability to harness the force have the potential be unstoppable soldiers. -

WOMEN AS CHARACTERS, PLAYERS AND DEVELOPERS An educational perspective Master Degree Project in Media, Aesthetics and Narration A1E One year Level 60 ECTS Spring term 2020 Emma Arltoft Supervisor: Lissa Holloway-Attaway Examiner: Rebecca Rouse Abstract There is a lack of female representation in video games, and women are often ignored as characters, as players, and as developers. This thesis investigates how the University of Skövde works with gender diversity in the second game project within those categories. A content analysis was carried out, and a total of 102 documents collected from the course site were coded. It was complemented with additional information from instructor interviews and a student survey. It was found that while there is an emotional commitment to diversity from the students as well as the instructors, there is a lack of clear guidelines and resources to create more nuanced portrayals of diversity. There is significant potential for improvements and a need for a continuous effort to follow up on the content produced.
