DIRECTOR OF TRACK & FIELD DAVID OLIVER

On September 6, 2017, Director of Athletics Kery Davis named World Olympian and alum David Oliver as its Director for Track & Field Program at Howard University.

In his first season (2017-18), Director Oliver saw Dominique Cleggett and Uchechi Onuoha reach the NCAA Prelims while watching nearly two dozen receive All-Academic honors.

The , Colo., native was destined to be a track & field star after his mother, Brenda Chambers, secured a spot on the 1980 Olympic Team in the 400-meter hurdles. Oliver returns to his alma mater as a highly decorated professional athlete. He was the 2008 Olympic Bronze Medalist in the 110-meter hurdles, and the 2013 World Champion in the same event. On the indoor stage, he earned the Gold medal in the 2008 USA Indoor Championships in the 60-meter hurdles and bronze in the 2010 World Cham- pionships. He maintained top 10 rankings in the world for 11 consecutive seasons, and has received several accolades including the 2010 which recognizes the USA’s Most Outstanding Track Athlete. A two-time All-American as student-athlete at Howard University, Oliver was inducted into the 2014 Howard University Hall of Fame and the 2016 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference Hall of Fame.

Off the track, Oliver dedicates his time to helping with youth track competitions and mentorship through the David Oliver Indoor Classic in Winston Salem, N.C., and the David Oliver Classic in Washington, D.C., while assisting spon- sored athletes in the Quicksilver Track Club in Atlanta, Ga.

Oliver has been featured in several major magazines, including Essence Magazine, Sports Illustrated for Kids, Sobe Fit Magazine, Stack Magazine, Spikes Magazine, and ESPN the Magazine. In Sept. 2008, he was honored at Howard’s 141st Opening Convocation for his outstanding achievements in athletics. Oliver was also honored by the Mayor of Denver with the naming of October 3rd as “David Oliver Day” and receiving a key to the city. He has also received the key to the city of Greensboro, N.C.

Oliver obtained his bachelor’s degree from Howard University in business administration in 2004. He is married to Emily Oliver and they have one son, Dawson.

2018-19 Howard Track & Field Coaching Staff

JESSICA COUSINS Associate Head Coach

Cousins enters her second stint at Howard as Associate Head Coach focusing on the long sprints and relays. During the 2018 season, student-athletes under Cousins’ leadership earned All-MEAC honors and posted several personal best.

After her first stint at Howard, Cousins moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida where she served as the assistant coach for both the Men and Women’s track and field program. She was named the 2016 Division II South Region Assistant Coach of the year. She had athletes under her direction who were Peach Belt champions in the 100h, 400h, 400m, 100m and relays. She served two seasons at Nova Southeastern University before returning to Howard in September 2017.

Prior to Nova, Coach Cousins served as the Assistant Coach for both Men’s and Women’s Track here at Howard. Cousins coached the sprints and hurdles during this time. She coached several All-MEAC performers.

Prior to arriving to Howard, Coach Cousins ran professionally for five years and was a two-time member of the USA national team to compete at the World Indoor Championships in 2010 and 2012.

ANDREW MURPHY Assistant Coach

In his second stint, Andrew Murphy enters his second season with the Bison primarily coaching the distance athletes as well as recruiting coordinator and program operations. During the 2018 sea- son, student-athletes under Coach Murphy’s direction set three school records and earned several All-MEAC honors.

Prior to joining Howard, Coach Murphy served as Assistant Coach at California State University East Bay where the Pioneers climbed the ranks of the CCAA. Along with serving as Meet Director for both home cross country and track and field meets, Coach Murphy successfully led Pioneer student-athletes to four all-time marks, including guiding the development of Marquise Cherry to All-American honors in the triple jump.

No stranger to the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC), Murphy served as Assistant Track & Cross Country coach at Morgan State University. During his first season three seasons, he helped MSU student-athletes win three conference titles, set five school records, and earn 19 All-MEAC awards. In 2013-14, five of Coach Murphy’s cross country runners gathered All-MEAC honors. That year, the MSU women earned an NCAA Regional Ranking and finished second at the MEAC Cross Championship, led by individual conference champion Ashley Seymour.
