This paper aims to tell about literary works. Some of the literary works are songs. This description is about meaning of love found in the lyrics of the 5SOS songs on the Youngbloodalbum. The objective of this study is to find out what type of meaning of love contained in the 5SOS songs.The writer is interested to describe meaning of love which is the broken heart love types in this paper. The broken heart love is prove through the lyrics from the songs in the 5SOS‟s Youngblood album. There is meaning of love about broken heart can be found in 5SOS‟s Youngblood album. This paper can be reference for those peoples who want to do further describing about meaning of love in the song lyrics.

Kertas karya ini bertujuan untuk menyampaikan tentang karya sastra. Sebagian dari karya sastra adalah lagu-lagu Deskripsi ini adalah tentang arti cinta yang ditemukan dalam lirik-lirik lagu 5SOS dalam album Youngblood. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk menemukan jenis cinta apa dari arti cinta yang terdapat dalam lagu-lagu 5SOS. Penulis tertarikuntuk mendeskripsikan arti cinta yakni jenis cinta yang sakit hati dalam kertas karya ini. Cinta yang sakit hati dibuktikan melalui lirik-lirik yang terdapat dalam lagu-lagu yang terdapat dalam album Youngblood 5SOS. Terdapatarti cinta yang sakit hati yang bisa ditemukan dalam album Youngblood 5SOS. Kertas karya ini bisa menjadi referensi untuk mereka yang ketika disaat yang akan dating ingin mendeskripsikan tentang arti cinta dalam lirik-lirik lagu.

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background of the study

Literature, most generically, is anybody of written works. There are two major schools and written of literature, oral abd written. Oral literature includes ballads, folklore, jokes, and fables that are passed down by word of mouth.

Written literature includes poetry and novels, with subsections for fiction, prose, myth, short story and novel. More restrictively, literature refers to writing considered to be an art form or any single writing deemed to have artistic or intellectual value, often due to deploying language in ways that differ from ordinary usage. Describes the language definition language can be defined as a socially shared those combinations of symbols and rule governed those combinations of symbols (language can be defined as a socially acceptable code or conventional system for delivering concepts through the use of symbols and combinations of the desired symbols are governed by the provisions).

Literature can be divided into three kinds, such as drama, poetry and novel. Drama is a mode of fictional representation through dialogue and performance. Poetry is a collection of spoken or written words that expresses ideas or emotions in a powerfully clear and imaginative style. Poetry has a part like theme, meaning, and figure of speech. Theme is a topic that acts as a

Universitas Sumatera Utara foundation for a literary work, while a theme is an opinion expressed on the subject. Meaning is a purpose that contained in the literary works.Figure of speechis a phrase or word having different meanings than its literal meanings. It conveys meaning by identifying or comparing one thing to another, which has connotation or meaning familiar to the audience. That is why it is helpful in creating vivid rhetorical effect. Literary works that almost have similarities with songs are literary works in the form of the poetry.

The writer is interested to tell about the meaning of love in “A Description the Meaning of Love in 5SOS‟s Youngblood Album”. In this album the writer wants to prove the meaning of love from the five song contained in 5SOS‟s

Youngblood Album. There is “Youngblood”, “Want You Back”, “Lie to Me”,

“Moving Along”, and “Ghost of You”.

In this description the writer will describe songs lyric of 5 Seconds of

Summer “Youngblood” album. The title of this paper is deliberately chosen because the writer want to tell that how is love and what kind problems that is a part in love. The reason the writer choose this topic because this song is about love problems which is broken heart love that often occur in teenagers' lives.

1.2 Problem of the Study

How is the love problems about broken heart portrayed in the meaning of love found in 5SOS‟sYoungblood album ?

1.3 Objective of the Study

The objective of writing this paper is to describe love problems about broken heart in 5SOS‟s Youngblood album.

The scope of the study is focused on love problems aboutbroken heart in the meaning of love in 5SOS‟s Youngblood album.

1.5 Significance of the Study

Theoritically, the significance of this description is to increase the literary understanding in terms of literary works as a poetry, lyrics and the song.

Practically, it has significance for the readers to understand what is the meaning of love through the lyrics of the songs.

1.6 Method of the Study

The writer uses the qualitative method in doing this paper. The primary data is in the lyrics of the song 5SOS‟s Youngblood Album and the secondary of data sources are from internet. As the first step, the writer listen and try to understand 5SOS song lyrics from internet. Second, search the lyrics from internet. Then the writer write and make some note and conclusion.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE

2.1 The Theories of Meaning

The term “theory of meaning” has figured, in one way or another, in a great number of philosophical disputes over the last century.

According to David Lewis wrote ; the description of possible languages or grammars as abstract semantic system whereby symbols are associated with aspects of the world ; the description of the psychological and sociological facts whereby a particular one of these abstract semantic systems is the one used by a person population. (Lewis 1970 :19).

2.2 The Definition of Meaning

Meaning is an actual or possible derivation from sentence, which is not associated with signs that have any original or primary intent of communication.

It is a general term of art used to capture a number of different senses of the word

“meaning”.

In another sense, the word “meaning” can be used to describe the internal workings of the mind, independentlyof any linguistic activity. This sort of meaning is deeply psychological. If we look for other uses we can find intent, feeling, implication, importance, value, and signification. Since the negative form

“meaningless” challenges and would deny these uses, experts believe that underlying them all are understanding and understandability.

Universitas Sumatera Utara According to Charles Morris, there are three types of meanings : referential meaning (the relationship between signs and entities in the wold), pragmatic meaning (the relationship between signs and the users; it includes identificational meaning, expressive meaning, associative meaning, social meaning, and imperative meaning), and intralingual meaning (the relationship between different signs; it includes phonological meaning, graphemic meaning, morphologicalor lexemic meaning, syntactic meaning, and discoursal or textual meaning).

2.3 The Definition of Song

Song is a single (and often standalone) work of music that is typically intended to be sung by the human voice with distinct and fixed pitches and patterns using sound and silence and a variety of forms that often include the repetition of sections.

Hardjana (1983: 486) said that “songs are a variety of sounds rhythmic (in speaking, singing, reading, etc.). Song is a part of music and music is one part of art work. By therefore, it can be said that the song is an integrated rhythmic sound with certain rhythms in rhythm, so that different types will appear songs, like keroncong, dangdut, pop, and rock”.

Song has parts like composer, tone, melody, the singer, and the lyrics.

Composer is who created the song and the music. Tone is the use of pitch in language to distinguish lexical or grammatical meaning – that is, to distinguish or to inflect words.All verbal languages use pitch to express emotional and other paralinguistic information and to convey emphasis, contrast, and other

Universitas Sumatera Utara such features in what is called intonation, but not all languages use tones to distinguish words or their inflections, analogously to consonants and vowels.

Melody is the single most important element within a song. In everyday language, this is the element we call „the tune‟. In technical terms, however, the melody is a series of pitches, or notes, that are organized to form a shape or pattern. Each individual note is given a length determined by the rhythm of the melody, so we might think of melody as „pitch plus time‟. The singer who is singing the song.

The singer of a song can be solo, duo, trio, quartet or quintet. Lyrics are words that make up a song usually consisting of verses and choruses. The writer of lyrics is a lyricist.

The words to an extended musical composition such as an opera are, however, usually known as a "libretto" and their writer, as a "librettist". The meaning of lyrics can either be explicit or implicit. Some lyrics are abstract, almost unintelligible, and, in such cases, their explication emphasizes form, articulation, meter, and symmetry of expression. Song is also used as an expression love and feeling through the lyrics contained in it.

2.4 The Definition of Love

Love is a very strong feeling of affection towards someone who you are romantically or sexually attracted to.To understand love,we really need to understand what prevents us from loving. When we believe our judgments about someone, we can feel anger, disappointment, or resentment, or we can just feel separate from that person. Erich Fromm (1983) about love says, “Love is an art

Universitas Sumatera Utara that requires knowledge and practice. Love is an activity and is not a passive influence. One of the essence of love is the presence of creativity in a person, especially in the aspect of giving and not receiving”.

Love is something that now in days is thrown around a lot but in the long run it means so much. it means that no matter what happens you will fight for one another and no matter what you won‟t let each other go without putting up a fight.

Love is not when you think that those tacos are the best things in the world it's when you know deep down that you could spend the rest of your life with them.

Love hurts if it is not used responsibly and wisely. Love when you build up this wall in your heart for so many years and afraid to give your love to anyone but then when you find that person then you tear that wall down not knowing what will happen leaving yourself completely exposed not knowing weather they will take your love, betray you love, broken heart, jealousy and also be faithfully because of love.

2.4.1 The Broken Heart Love

One of the love type is broken heart love. It‟s very important to know

about broken heart love. Sternberg (1949) about broken heart love says,

“Many type of love that we can know, the one of them is broken heart love. It

can be happen to many people who feeling love. This the condition where in a

relationship there is no commitment or desire. It’s the broken heart love”. So

many types of love but the broken heart is very important to know. Everybody

want to insult the broken love. In a relationship, the man and the woman just

want to make their love perfect without something that through the broken

everytime and it can be happen if one of them cheating or leave them alone.

2.4.2 The Love Problems

Love is very something important in this life and everybody can feel the love. There are many thing about love or love problems. Love problems is how love occurs in a relationship. Many things happen like faithfulness, happy, or broken heart. Broken heart is one of love problems. Many types of love problems can be found in broken heart love. Erich Fromm (1956) about love problem that is broken heart love says, “Everybody maybe can feel love without problem, but there is something love problem and that is broken heart love. Broken heart love is something feels like sadness, loneliness, jealousy, or angry”. The statement from Erich Fromm can make us understand about love problem occurs in broken heart love and it‟s about something like sadness, loneliness, jealousy, or angry.

The first describe is “Youngblood” : this song tells about the singer feels broken heart about his relationships with his girlfriend. According to him, he surrended everything important in his life just for her because she made him to believe that she was all his. She even assured him she would love him until her dying days. However, her actions say otherwise. He even talks about she used to call him “baby” but now just calls him by his name. He feeling broken heart because of that and think it‟s finally over for their relationships. He being older and the girl wants to experience love with someone of the same age as her that‟s why she has been calling someone else. He loves the girl very much but tries to run away from her to protect the girl from himself. He also wants her to be happy, but he is not strong enough to let her go definitively.

He still has feelings for his ex girlfriend but he knows his ex has truly moved on from him. In the song, he is asking his ex to lie to him and tell him she loves him even though he knows she does not nor ever will. He isn‟t happy and she is happy.

Kinda wish they had never met because he can‟t forget her just she easily did with him. He feel broken heart and he will move on physically, but will never fully replace his ex internally.

The fourth describe is “Moving Along” : this song tells about the loneliness from the singer. After his girlfriend left him, he feels everything is doesn‟t normal for his life. He hopes his girl broken like he does. But even though the situation like that, he still thinking about her and still feels love. He ask himself; is my girlfriend moving along like me, or is my girlfriend feel like he feel. He realized he feels really broken after his girlfriend left him alone. 4.1 CONCLUSION

After analyzing all the data types through the lyrics of 5SOS‟sYoungblood album, in this paper found the love problems. Based on the describe, it is concluded that :

 There are three types of love problem about broken heart that can be

found in 5SOS‟s Youngblood album which is sadness, jealousy,angry and

loneliness.

 By listening and studying love problem about broken heart as part of

the meaning of love through listening to songs from the

5SOS‟sYoungblood album, the listeners can find out that the lyric of the

song really tells about broken heart. So, the singer conveys that the broken

heart contained in the lyric is useful as a part of love problems in human‟s

life, especially for the young generations.

A. 5SOS Biography

5SOS or 5 Seconds of Summer, are an Australian pop rock band from Sydney, New South Wales, formed in 2011. The group consists of lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist Luke Hemmings, lead guitarist Michael Clifford, bassist Calum Hood, and drummer Ashton Irwin. They were originally YouTube celebrities, posting videos of themselves covering songs from various artists during 2011 and early 2012. They rose to international fame while touring with English-Irish band One Direction on their Take Me Home Tour. They have since released three studio albums and headlined three world tours.n early 2014, the band released "She Looks So Perfect" as their debut single, which topped the charts in Australia, New Zealand, Ireland and the United Kingdom. Their self-titled debut album was released in June 2014, peaking at number one in 11 countries, and was followed by a live album titled LIVESOS.
